As a 3rd year History student... Jade THANK YOU!!!! It is so important that history is discussed and challenged and explored from the versions which we are selectively educated on. If you do anything today, look up any country in the world, pick a year, person, event etc. and do some research on the different historical perspectives on that topic. Challenge your own education!

Hi Jade! I'm from Spain and as you may know, just like the UK, Spain has a lot of colonial history. We cover the issue in secondary education but just like a thing that happened and that made Spain "gain power" but we rarely see what effects the colonization had in the countries Spain invaded. It is something that should be addressed because some of the nationalistic ideologies see that period as a glorious one and not the massacre it was. It is very important and I think you are doing so good at pointing it out. These videos give me the nicest vibes btw!! love
@maudhaugland58223 жыл бұрын
When I came to the UK I was genuinely shocked that you didn't learn more about your own colonization history at school, especially because it was such a huge reason for why the WW1 happened in the first place (and the UK seems to be obsessed with that). In Norway we learned about colonization from the UK, Germany and France (mostly) for almost a month in high school, and we didn't even have anything to do with it.

I feel like all history courses for the different countries are made to make that country look as good as possible. Japan doesn’t learn about comfort women, I don’t think America learns about the genocide of the native Americans. Don’t forget, these history courses are ultimately decided on by the government, and to maintain nationalism and perception of course they wouldn’t want their children looking at them in a bad light. It’s sad, but logical.

I decided to focus on the British Empire for my 2nd year A-Level History coursework. You can learn about it in school but the content will be mandated by the goverment. I used sources like Niall Ferguson's book on the empire which offered a different viewpoint to a textbook. My point is you have to seek it out but the information is there if you look.

your monologue about history and how's been taught to us was very powerful. I just understood that this problem is international which is depressing. I'm from Russia and I'm finishing highschool in two month so our history lessons are mainly focused on Russia in 20th century and the amount of blunt lies that we're being told is shocking. our country still has an enormous Stalin cult which is so so sooo sad and a lot of people still don't know the truth about him and the soviet government in general just because they've been taught differently. so yeah, thank you for this video!!

My family is from Russia too and Ukraine . I live in Scotland now but oh my god, the way history is taught in schools in Ukraine is SHOCKING!! Children are taught that Stepan Bandera is a hero for Ukraine. He should never be considered a hero. He aligned with the Nazis, collaborated in the Holocaust and murdered 70,000 Jews and 100,000 ethnic Poles on his own command. I’ve seen LOADS of Ukrainians now turn to Nazism and turn into horrific anti-semites and Russophobes. They all tell me that I should die bc I speak Russian and I have family from Russia. It really is frightening to see children praise people - in SCHOOLS - somebody who organised the killing of hundreds of thousands of innocent people. The Ukrainian government banned books bc they talked about the atrocities Ukraine committed during the Second World War, and supposedly it’s a democracy!! It’s crazy how countries hide away from their past and choose not to properly address their history. Because, in the end, every country has done something bad and horrible, and we have grown from that and are still growing, and yet if we want to stop future atrocities like those in history we HAVE to learn about them and the effect they had in history and today.

Yeah....Sorry I don't wanna ruin it for you or anything... but I'm also German and let me tell you apart from the Holocaust nothing in German history gets treated well in School. Germany was, right before WWI one of the 5 biggest colonial powers, and I know for a fact that neither me nor any of my friends from diffrent parts of the country learned about that in school. Neither did we lear about the various genocids comitted by Germany in its colonies. The only thing we were taught in school was about the economics of slave trade. So no, history lessons in Germany are just as racist as anywhere else in the west. Germany also paints over it's history. It's only that the Holocaust was so big, so brutal, so dark that no one coul ignore it so they have to teach about it.

I feel like I can relate to your uncomfortable feeling when going to the South Korean prisons. I've just finished my A Level Nazi Germany module. We unfortunately were not able to go all the way up to The Final "Solution"/ Auschwitz but the treatment of Russian and Polish Jews really made me feel uncomfortable, which made me feel close to crying. Also when I went on my Year 9 WW1/2 trip, we walked across the Somme battlefield, visited a German cemetery with mass graves and saw loads of walls with the millions of missing soldiers. That made what I had heard or read in a textbook seem so real. Its one thing reading/hearing but seeing it in real life blows your mind away. Also the reality of North Korean concentration camps being modelled off the Nazis and the torture and deaths they carry out today as your reading this. Things like this have made me even more grateful about my relatively safe life and encourage me to be an advocate for peace and human rights to all. Also I love the fact that you mentioned the winners section. UK and USA knew about the treatment of Jews in 1941 but were unable to do anything due to them fighting the war. Take what you want from that......... Overall an excellent video!!! Love you Jade

Hey Jade! Happy Birthday!🥳 Hope you’d a lovely day and I’m so happy to see you enjoying your Seoul study adventures! Referring to your point on history curriculums in school, as an Irish person, we were taught in depth about our history of 800 years under British colonial rule and the many rebellions that took place up to the final rebellion in 1916 while we tried to get Home Rule. That was then preceded by our Civil War which resulted in Independence, however, like The Korean Peninsula, resulted in a division on our island between the Republic and Northern Ireland (however the political landscapes are different of course). It’s a very interesting and tragic history at the same time, resulting in an almost extinction of the Irish language (and the majority speaking English instead of Irish as a first language on the island today) and a halving of our population through genocide and emigration during the Great Famine in the 1840s while still part of the empire. The cultural erasure that was attempted by the British on the Irish was also taught so that the cultural revival of Ireland can still continue today as there is even a sense of lost identity today (in my opinion although my generation seem to have an appetite to regain the language at least more than our parent’s) while trying to keep up with the modern Western world (there’s a lot of ‘plastic paddy’ things mainly for tourism reasons). I think that was the main goal of our curriculum to teach us our history in this way to bring about a sense of pride and Irish identity to Irish people to keep our heritage and culture alive. Also, during the Civil War, the Public Records Office, which held records of Irish people back as far as the Norman Conquests, was bombed, thus destroying the records and so learning history in this way at least preserves their memories in some way and what they would’ve lived through and experienced, even if their names are lost (though recently their have been some fantastic and successful efforts to restore some recovered records that were involved in the blast but there’s still a lot missing which is a huge pity. The restoration is very interesting though - technology, huh?). It is disappointing and insulting though when we meet British people who gaslight and make fun of Irish culture and history, such as calling Irish names ‘weird’, calling the Republic of Ireland ‘Southern Ireland’ (feels like a lack of acknowledgment that our ancestors went through all they did to not be even recognised as a republic), to name a couple. But we do understand it’s out of ignorance because it isn’t taught in school there and that’s not people’s fault - it’s systematic. But I agree with you Jade, it is mind boggling how much of an erasure there is of colonial history in the British school curriculum. I’ve an Uncle who’s English and I couldn’t believe it when he told me, but it also explained, what are perceived as micro-aggressions from an Irish perspective, aren’t necessarily intended that way and just come from a lack of knowledge about those things. If you are interested or ever bored and would like to learn more, there’s a good podcast series on Spotify about Irish history: open.spotify.com/show/2a2URhT3m5IPhb9Xp8dNWo?si=IeLEgBVaSSaEI0hzDNtrDA. 😊 I am curious though to explore outside of our colonised past and take you up on your invitation to delve more into our country’s history. I’m starting to learn more about Celtic Ireland before colonisation but will keep this aspect in mind too while doing so - thanks! Oh, and a Happy St.Patrick’s Day also☘️!❤️

I get you. When I was traveling alone through Europe I was astonished about the history. But in Spain I didn't read about the colonization in America. As Peruvian I learn about it like 4 months each year at school.

omg jade, I just love you and your creation!! So beautiful and soothing and comfortable, but also adventurous and exciting!! What I can say about the history thing: I'm from Brazil, but I lived most of my life in Germany and I really felt a difference between them on educating shit that their people did. When I started studying about the indigenous people here in Brazil and the massice genocide that they suffered and still suffer (And this genocide happens in many ways, killing their people, bur also their culuture, their believes, their histories and so on..) Of course Germany still has a LOT of work to do to explain all the mess they caused and Brazil's history is very complicated, cause who did this to the indigenous people were the europeans, cause we're a colonised country. But who runs the country now are still the europeans... Anyway, there is just so much to talk about this and so much that I still don't know, just felt that I wanted to share this :)

Omg you should listen to this song called Because I Love You by Chef'Special, the first verse describes exactly what you were saying about how school/the government teach us (in my case dutch students) so little about our horrible colonial history. And besides that it is a major bop. Love your videos 😍

Thanks Jade for what you said about history, and as a history student I totally felt that. I am from Hong Kong, a former British colony (like loads of other places). Since the colonial times, the British government had taught us that we went from 'a barren rock' to 'a major city in Asia', the 'pearl of asia' as they call it. However, my history teacher pointed our that it really wasn't as 'barren' as the British claimed it to be. Yes, there was no major trade between Western countries and Hong Kong at that time, however, there was also trade within the city, with multiple bazaars and at least a few thousand people on there. The history that the British government taught us HKers about HK is that all the glory and development only happened because of the British. They highlighted the contribution of the British when in fact, the locals also played a part. I am NOT saying that the British didn't contribute majorly either cuz they very much did BUT it just wasn't as much as they claim to be. I never even considered this fact before my teacher mentioned it as the phrase was something that I've heard since I had any knowledge of HK history. Another additional fact is that different terms are used to describe the same event to convey different meanings. An example is the handover of HK. The British gov called it a 'handover', meaning from Br to Chn, and it is a neutral term. However, the Chinese gov called it the 'return' of HK, a much more positive term. If you are multilingual you may also go onto Wikipedia and read the page of historical events in different languages and you would see a different picture painted for different languages. I did that once for a Chinese historical event and lo and behold, the English and Chinese pages delivered very different stories with both biased to their own side.
