Cotton Pad Mod for Keyboard Stabilizer

I've been playing around with this just to see how good I could get the stabs on my Akko ACR75V2 to get (Had some plate mount stabs that had some HORRID ticking) and I've come to realize a few things that might be useful to any of you: - This mod (though a but inconsistent) can serve as a sort of substitute for the Holee mod - There are times where the cotton will move around after some time and cause a sticky sounding uptick! This is usually due to the cotton sticking to certain parts of the housing or travelling underneath the entire stabilizer which causes that mushy sticky sound as mentioned before. - With the right amount of cotton, I was able to get my stabs to point where they stopped rattling and ticking AND without it feeling mushy. Awesome!!! - In terms of longetivity, I've had this mod on my keyboard for about a week now and whatever sort of mushy feeling or sound I had before was either reduced or was completely eliminated. Will come back to this video and let you all know how it'll hold up in the future. There are definitely downsides to the mod but it's definitely worth trying if (A) The keyboard is soldered/has rattly stabs (B) You're lazy / Don't have the time or patience to do any Holee Modding or Wire Balancing. This was a neat mod!!! Makes me wonder what other crazy things we could do to stop ticking/rattle.

its been done a couple years ago but abandoned because it makes stabilizers mushy if too much cotton is used, i did it too

@@GSekong true, I did this too without the lube and it was alright, my stabilizers were still pretty rattly though but I guess that it needed more than just cotton. Didn't really feel mushy so yeah.

I've done something similar but instead used a small square of neoprene weatherstripping foam that I found and held onto for years for "some reason". Worked a treat and made even the stock stabs sound glorious.

Awesome video! I have a Ducky 2 TKL with silent red switches which was far from a silent board thanks to the stabs. I tried modding them with tons of lube it did not work. I tried the cotton mode without any expectation but I was amazed when I heard and felt the result. My ducky lives up to the switches it has now. I really recommend it. A few things to keep in mind: it's a bit hard to insert the cotton without desoldering; be mindful of the quantity of cotton, less is more cause you can always add up but is hard to get it out.

Came across this video randomly, thanks for making it. It's a great alternative for the holee mod if done right. I installed some cotton pads on my spacebar stabs, and the right one fell off to the PCB lol. I am sure the left one will fall out soon enough. But it seems to have made the spacebar quieter and more thocky, but it definitely has less of a snap back and hence feels mushy. I don't mind it I guess, but unfortnately, it did not get rid of the rattle on the left side of my spacebar. I am too lazy to take apart my keyboard since it's screw-in stabs and requires me to disassemble the entire keyboard, so I will leave the fallen cotton on the pcb for now before I get time to redo it and clean it. I hope the PCB stays safe and doesn't screw up any time soon! lol

it can be a good solution for stabs on plate-mount soldered keyboards where you cant extract stabs without desoldering the respective switch. in such cases, i was using a shit load of lube press fit inside the stabs. worked good, but made keys...uhmmm...heavy, so to say. will try your method instead

Do you still prefer this mod or holee mod more? From your sound test, the stabs sounds a bit muted, due to the cotton, but I'd give this a try.

Yeah it does get muted depending on the amount of cotton. But if u reduce the cotton a bit it wouldnt get tht muted. It would take some readjustments.

Hey Wan, I came to this idea myself using the cotton find on Q-Tips. Now I stumbled across your/this video. Cool. :) It works fine for now. But one Stabilizer seems to make a slight smacking noise (backspace). The other two are good. I'm not sure how long this mod will hold: would be cool if we could exchange in this regard. I rock it for some weeks now on my only keyboard and since I installed it I have not noticed a change. We'll see what happens in the future. Check out the 'Korean Stab Mod' if you haven't already. This might be the next one I try. But really ... I have to say it right now: I hate Stabilizer. Perhaps some Staebis could be the solution? xD Best reagards Q

hmm interesting mod. how about using a toothpick / tweezers or any hard thin object to replace the brush when trying to insert the cotton? i feel kind of sorry for the brush.

Ahh yes i did use tweezers but i rather just use my brush because i had no problem damaging the bristles haha. Since i got alot of others.

thank u! glad you liked it. I honestly think holee mod might be better long-term. but cotton pad mod is more effective for those that can't take out their stabs or for amount-of-padding control. I prefer (cotton pad mod + bandaid mod) 😄

The only way to do that is to buy switches with long stems so it bottoms out faster like nk creams, glorious pandas, durock sunflowers, etc
