Thanks for the video Terry. You are always great at explaining things. For hatches that seem to be staggered, early chicks and late ones, what is your cut off day for incubating? I did a day 21 cut off for my most recent eggs, but after doing an eggtopsy, I had quite a few developed which probably needed another day.
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
I usually don't go past day 19 - 20 as most of my eggs hatch pretty much uniformly. If you have cool spots in your incubator, hatching can be up to 3 or 4 days late.

Great video. Thank you for sharing these insights with us. I have a question. I keep my incubator at 37.5 celcius. Should temperature be same for lockdown too? I see some people lowering it.
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it stays the same temp throughout.
@tullyriverquail2 жыл бұрын
Same temp, increase humidity to 50%-60% pending how "weather tight" your incubator is to the outside humidity. Remember, %50 humidity maintains the water volume of the egg, >%50 (%60 increases it - albeit slowly), decreasing the internal air sack.

Do you think it's important to have an egg turner? I don't have one I just open it up and turn them. I just found your page and I'll be watching the humidity and do lockdown I hadn't done that before maybe that's why I only had 1 hatch each time I've incubated. But my question is do u think that affects where the air bubble would be placed if I don't have them in an egg turner?

I wondered why you called it "lockdown". Incubator suppliers refer to the "hatching tray" in the bottom of the incubator. Am I missing something?
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
Depends on the type of incubator, not all incubators have hatching boxes, the eggs are just placed in the bottom of the incubator.
@ApiaryManager4 жыл бұрын
@@CoturnixCorner OK but it was the term "lock down" that I was referring to. I didn't know what you meant by this and why it was different to just "hatching".(which everyone knows and understands). Are you doing anything different during this period or special in any way? Why use a different/non-standard term for it? I'm not trying to be difficult, or confrontational, in any way. I'm just trying to understand if you are doing anything extra for quail that other birds (e.g. chicken) don't have. It's the term that puzzled me. I think most commercial incubators have integral hatching boxes in the bottom where the eggs are allowed to hatch and the birds/reptiles/etc are contained until they are ready to be moved on to less demanding conditions. I do appreciate you taking the time to explain what you're doing and trying to demystify the process.
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
@@ApiaryManager actually the term lockdown is used throughout the poultry industry. Basically the term is applied to the the last few days of incubation where the eggs are no longer turned and the humidity is raised to help soften the eggshell. I think they dubbed it "lockdown" as during this time you don't want to disturb or open the incubator until the eggs hatch (thus being locked down). Hope this helps and thanks for your comments.
@ApiaryManager4 жыл бұрын
@@CoturnixCorner I've kept chickens for many years and never heard that term until I came across your channel (and also MyShire). I assumed it was a local term or that you were doing something else specific to quail. I reason that other viewers would be as unsure of its meaning as I was. Thank you for clarifying your meaning though.

What is “shrink wrapped”?
@CoturnixCorner4 жыл бұрын
When the inner membrane wraps around the chick and suffocates the chick inside the egg is known as shrink wrapped.. This happens when dry air enters the egg once the chick has pipped, which is why it is important to keep the humidity levels up and not open the incubator.
