Could 24 Hour Formula 1 Races Ever Happen?

So could F1 run a 24-hour race? Imagine if the French GP was at Le Mans, or the US GP at Daytona Road course!
Personally, I love Formula 1 sprint races, but there is also something to be said for a longer, full-day race with several classes and strategy battles that last hours not seconds.
Battling through traffic and racing at tracks like Daytona and Le Mans would also be epic! Imagine if they added an F1 class and kept the current GTs and Prototype cars.
But, would Formula 1 beat the current crop of Sports cars? And what mods would they need to make the chequered flag?

But first, we need to thank our sponsor, Masterworks.
The stock market has been mad lately, in fact, nearly every top equity law firm is predicting less than 5% returns this year. And so you can understand wanting to diversify your portfolio.
So this is where Masterworks come in, they are the only investment platform dedicated to art investing. Normally an asset class that is only available to billionaires.
And contemporary art prices have out-paced the S&P500 by 174% in the years between 1995 and 2020 - and that’s according to publicly available data.
And so the demand is (understandably) high - but you guys can skip the wait with the link masterworks.io/driver61.

Even with the extra time for the pits stops and parts replacements, a good de-tuned F1 car might last 24-hours, but if they could get caught out on the backside of Le Mans when the rain starts, and it always rains at night at Le Mans, the F1 car would be in trouble.

To the point of physical aspect of it all - If Pirelli were to make a much harder tire to last a stint or two, wouldn't the lateral forces on the driver be reduced due to slower cornering speeds, thus putting less stress on their necks and bodies as a whole? Also I love this idea so much. Logistics be damned lol
@bgosl
@bgosl 2 жыл бұрын
I don't think the difference in speeds would be too big: today's Pirelli F1 tires are purposely made to degrade faster than they need to, and have a certain pace difference based on their lifespan. Basically FIA made graphs for this, how quickly each compound should degrade, and what the difference between them should be. Which means with today's technology you could make tires that would last a lot longer, without actually sacrificing any (or at least not much) pace and cornering speed. Also, the lateral forces are obviously dependent on turning speeds, but when you're talking one or a few seconds difference per lap, you're still very close to the same cornering speeds: 2 sec reduction over a 2 min lap is a 1/60th difference, so if your max G over a lap was 5G (apparently Turkey has the highest actual G, at 4.7), that would only be reduced to 4.92G - which is still a heavy strain, and basically equal. You might prolong your endurance by a few minutes over a stint, but that's assuming that our body is that exact in dealing with G force. I think it's more likely our bodies act in a "how much time have I been over 3G" type of manner, which would still be practically equal.

Some little corrections: - The hybrid Hypercars are always limited to 670hp even when the hybrid system deployed unlike its LMP1 predecessors. The GR010 for example has a 3.5L V6 producing that exact amount of power, with the hybrid system on the front only works after 120kph. (as per regulation) - Bugatti never been in the talks of entering LMH. The Bugatti Bolide is just another track day car for the rich and not intended for actual racing. I mean that giant W16 engine will be a big problem against the V6 & V8 current cars are using. - The AM Valkyrie was intended to enter LMH, but we all know what happened. AM was in bad financial situation, then Stroll bought the majority stake and focuses on F1 instead. Plus they have been encountering a lot of problems with the road car itself so I'm not sure the race car itself will be great.

@@Skilan506 Wrong wrong and wrong again. Porsche is building an LMDh, yes. But an LMDh is also a Hypercar. LMH & LMDh can both be called Hypercars! Yes, LMH means "Le Mans Hypercar", but that doesn't mean LMDh cars aren't Hypercars. Yes, this is very confusing, yes the ACO screwed up big time with their naming scheme. No, LMDh does not mean "Le Mans Daytona hybrid", the "h" was never defined - the correct name of the class is "Le Mans Daytona h" - stupid, but whatever. The h could mean hybrid, but it could also mean Hypercar. Ferrari however are building an LMH, NOT an LMDh! They were thinking about deciding between the two Hypercar subclasses for a very long time. They preferred that LMDh cars are cheaper, but they desperately wanted to build their own chassis, which is not possible in LMDh, because LMDh cars use LMP2 chassis as a base. Therefore they went with LMH!

And they killed the golden era of Sportscar Racing with it. It was less Jaguar and Peugeot running F1 stuff in a Le Mans outfit. The FIA just straight up said "hey you guys are now forced to use this much more expensive F1 shit that's also not reliable at all" Sure just run a naturally aspirated 3.5 liter Engine that just so happened to be an F1 engine. Why did Mazda win 1991? Because they didn't have to use that garbage It should say enough when the Wankel Engine wins, not because it's fast but because it was more reliable than the rest. They introduced the rules in 1991 and in 1992 they haven't even had enough cars to justify even running it. The cost of participating was as high as F1 (about 15 million dollar) but for only 1/3rd of the races. After 1991 basically everyone just decided to go to F1 because it was cheaper to run F1 directly than running F1 stuff where it can't do anything. sorry, I just kinda dislike F1 for being favored by the FIA who would go to such lengths and outright kill off something that was close to F1s popularity back then

Headlights on an F1 car? I think they'd rather do an endurance race at track with its own lighting system, like Bahrain or Abu Dhabi. You also made a great point about Le Mans track being bumpy, they'd need special suspension to go there longer than the usual 2 hours. It's not only a long race, it's also the track adding to an accelerated suspension wear.

In the case of the Toyota (shown at that moment in the video), the Toyota has a hybrid system that allows for up to 272 PS (200kW) of electric power. However IT IS NOT POSSIBLE to use these electric 200 kW & the 500 kW of the ICE at the same time (which WOULD be 700 kW (952 PS)). When the electric boost is active, the ICE is turned down to only 300 kW, so that the total limit of 500 kW is never exceeded!

Maybe they could integrate a headlight into the camera module at the top of the car by making it larger. There would be an drag hit, but you could make it fairly slippery and not fundamentally change the aerodynamics.
@zuon_0182
@zuon_0182 2 жыл бұрын
I dont think the drag would be much of an issue. But a headlight there would likely put tio much light on the dashboard and visor at night which could make it reflex that light and thus make it harder to see. I may be wrong tho

I would love to see an F1 team like Mercedes, Red Bull, or Ferrari attempt to do this in the Garage 56 slot in future. It's probably not ever going to happen, but we can only hope.

I think the most difficult or impossible task of getting f1 to compete at the 24 hours, would be drivers. Every team would need 3 drivers for the cars, add up 2 or 3 cars per team, and it makes it an almost impossible task with how much strain is put on the drivers.

Not had a chance to watch yet. But the idea that teams work together with multiple drivers and 1 car. That would be interesting, even just 1 race a year at specific tracks within the f1 season. Personally think f1 would be more interesting with more varied type/style races.

An interesting subject indeed, quite a lot of differences between F1 and LMP1/2 for sure, would basically need to overhaul the entire F1 regulations (again) just to have a Le Mans version😂 but would definitely be pretty awesome to see them racing around there, even if it wasn't for a 24 hour race!👍👏

As somebody who works in fatigue risk management, this sounds absolutely frightening and super dangerous even if only considering the human attention, focus, and reaction time requirements of F1. That said, it could still be pretty cool to watch.

It's totally WRONG to say that F1 engineers would destroy the competition. They are not any better than WEC engineers! They are the very same kind of engineers, just working for different employers. Each of the groups works around completely different technical regulations and only that makes one type of cars faster than the other type of cars in a given scenario.

That's a very good idea but I don't think an F1 car could match the reliability of a Lemans car. Maybe for 6-12 hours it could last but 24 is doubtful. It needs so many modifications. It is faster but they'll need more stops than the LMP1 car.

- 8h race - F1 + F2 - Single choice Pirelli "super-hard" tyres - On a fully lit track. (We have some of those even in F1 now.) - DRS always enabled unless it's wet. - Fuelling must be added back indeed. - With similar height pilots (the "team's problem" to assemble a "set"), and with quickly replaceable hard padding. There is a single question: When? :)

Fascinating proposition. Historically, F1 car designs have always been optimized first and foremost to minimize lap times on road courses with reliability generally being treated as a secondary goal. Having said that, the days of engines blowing up on the warm-up lap or gearboxes breaking into bits and pieces at any given time are also long gone. My best guess though is that you would still have a hard time making a F1 car last for 24 hrs without serious maintenance breaks and how much speed you would lose in the course of re-engineering for that level of endurance is hard to say. 10% perhaps...or maybe 20%?

Correct. This video is just very poorly researched. For example, when they say that F1 cars make more downforce than F1 LeMans cars, that's not correct. LMP1 cars actually made more downforce than their F1 contemporaries (at least they did until 2017).

F1 and the AIACR European Championship used to be 3 hrs or 500 miles, back in the 1906-1960 isch. So the modern form of about 60-80 laps is just a shortening of that form.

The WEC cars raced at COTA a few years ago, for a six hour race. This was when Porsche and Audi were the top teams. I was highly impressed by the cars. They were about ten seconds per lap slower than the F1 cars racing there for the US Grand Prix.
