PLot twist. Why don't the big teams copy the small teams. For example, ferrari felt bad that they had a budget 2.5x times that of williams so they decided to make it more fair for them, they decided to copy the williams and make a red williams to make it more fair.

@@aloter1680 they are a lot like the aero rakes that you sometimes see on cars, it depends what kind of data the teams are collecting. other teams do run them, but racing point were probably just doing more extensive testing this year due to the radically different car. other teams would have a handle on how the tyres behave (most teams have run the same sort of car concept for 3 years in a row now) and so focused their testing on other areas of the car. no point having those bulky camera housings messing up the aero if you dont need them to be there.

As someone who doesn't follow F1, it's extremely difficult to even tell the cars apart, aside from colors. Personally, I'd like it if originality were encouraged heavily through some means or another, however, it might unfairly benefit big budget teams who can afford to take risks, while conventional teams would be stuck with what's already available. Even so, it would be neat if there was some way to incentivize people to think up radically different designs.

This one reminds me of Japan’s first jet engine in WWII, where they straight up copied Germany’s turbojet design just by looking at pictures of them. I’m pretty sure if the submarines carrying the turbojet components arrived in Japan, the development time would’ve been cut short significantly. They had to make do with the wartime situation, thus creating the NK-20 based on the BMW-003 design. Any idiot can copy a homework and get away with it, but it takes some brain power to understand what you’re copying. Great writeup! Once again, they copied the Germans heh.

I would agree with this. Every change in rule which is providing the drivers with more equal opportunities is very welcome for me. I want to a fair as possible competition and so it makes sense to allow copying or even equal parts for the teams. Until 1980 it was allowed to purchase all parts from other teams and so copying an entire car. Within the American CART Championship this is also allowed even today, what makes smaller teams more competitive and reduces costs massively. In my opinion a great idea even for the formula 1.

This basically means that unless you have some completely new game changing idea you can't start up in the racing business because the big boys designs are already established and can't be copied. I'd say making cars more and more similar takes away one of the biggest upsides of autoracing, the team. If you just have a bunch of the same cars it's just up to drivers and drivers alone. Sure pit stop crew will make a difference too and all, but it's not as interesting anymore. One upside though would probably be more competitive driving, which would be fun to see
