Could Black Magic Resolve be your next DAW ?

There are a lot of unfair things happening to 'Pro Tools' users - perfectly good hardware being made incompatible with the new software, and convoluted software upgrade practices - There are a lot of valid reasons for Pro Tools users to now look for a new DAW. Black Magic design incorporated the incredibly powerful Fairlight EVO system into Resolve.
could Resolve could be your next DAW? Let's investigate !
This video is my own speculation and opinion. This video is not sponsored.

Would be great for Blackmagic to add MIDI Tracks to Resolve not just for synths/instruments but also to record automation when using external VSTs. The Fairlight hardware is pretty cool but still a bit to pricey for most people to take advantage of. Very informative video to see the EVO system.

I have stopped paying 24k a year for Adobe products and stopped using Premiere entirely. Davinci Resolve's program has turned me from armature to professional editor and colorist. It took three years but time well spent. What I love is the ability to edit data and enter expressions instead of relying on Adobe's GUI. It makes the work more precise and efficient. I'm not an audio tech on this level but

Excellent video!! as Anneke below has said, this is one if not the only channel to showcase the Fairlight hardware and software integration. I realize the Fairlight design priority is post production but I think it is an extremely strong application for tracking and mixing also. I do have a question about the interface, that being the audio input interface.....from what i can tell fairlight only accepts audio from the fairlight madi accelerator card which mean madi only from a device such as RME MADI XT feeding into the fairlight card. Is that your understanding?

well it is not a full daw allthough it has some daw functions but i personaly hope they will turn the enite things into a DVE-DAW-DVE so that noone needs two things for the same task. i had this some one year ago : i made a track then i needed a video now i had to go over to davinci with the audiotrack and now i needed to kinda match the video i wanted to the audiotrack. if DR18 had a fully daw vapable fairight, i would not need all those steps but i could do both things in one place and simultane. this is why i suggest them to program fairlight so that you can do all things you can on a daw : midi, vst , instrument recording vocals , mastering of the audio and then at the same time in the same process you produce the video both at the same time : i tell you noone would need protools or cakewalk sonar nor bitwig nor none of them but only one single program that is a fully fleged DVE and a fully flegded DAW at the same time ! BMD : i tell you huys that would be a totoal revulution in audio and video production if you only would take my suggestion seriouse ! you would outrun all of them and who would need to have two seperate programs for two seperate media when one can have one single programe for both ! Black Magic Design : i tell you you can ignite the revulution and you truely allready have the very base for doing so so please take the DVE to the DAW and the DAW to the DVE

Hello Cris and thank you for this video, which reminds me of the "Constallation" model (installed by Joe Hammer, whom I salute and thank for all his help) that we used to own and have since migrated to NUENDO following the takeover by Black Magic Design. I loved the listening quality of the "JOG" for audio editing, which I've never been able to find on any DAW (Nuendo, protools,..). Curious to hear your point of view where Fairlight can still improve. I'm not doing music, but I can imagine that you might be missing some midi sequencing and support for tempo/bars. I use fairlight for my surround mixes of short films and television work and the only real thing that was a downside for me was the availability of the hardware. I wasn't able to order the Desktop console anywhere so in the end I gave up and bought a Behringer X-touch, which works but it's missing many features. But yeah I've moved that work from Logic Pro completely over to Fairlight and it's great.

The original FairlightAU EVO had MIDI integration right in the timeline (required the "Plus Pack" license option), with any given track (out of 256 on a standard license) being capable of being set as a "MIDI Track" at the drop of a hat. Plugins on Windows were VST3 64-bit. Resolve is cross-platform, so unsure about plugin handling on various platforms, but Resolve on Windows 7 or 10 should handle VST3 64-bit. That said, Resolve comes with it's own set of quite-usable Plugins for Reverb/etc, and the Fairlight mixer has full realtime 7-band EQ and compressor/gate on every channel _built-in_...

Having had to endure Pro Tools for decades I would be happy to see the back of it for good. Most of the studios where I work have ditched it, unless the client insists (most don't), and that's fine with me. To me almost anything is preferable, and there are free (Cakewalk), nearly free (Reaper) and paid (Cubase) options that I prefer. The only exception for me is Logic - that's almost as bad as Pro Tools, and in some ways worse. These days moving projects between DAWs is relatively simple, so folks can choose what they like to work with and hand it over for mixing/mastering.

Chris: I want to first of say to you that I now know how the 49er’s felt when they journeyed to California and found “…Gold in them thar hills”. This video could not have come at a better time for me. My PT 12.6 program (that had been running on a long in the tooth Mac Pro) started giving some problems a few months back and finally “gave up the ghost”. I was seriously looking at Studio One and their 32S work desk. However, after seeing your video, I will now be going BM all the way. I have three questions. One is, what would be a “guesstimate” on the cost for setup that you have in the video? Two, I ask you not to take offense but can I perform a Vulcan Mind Meld on you? I need your knowledge.🖖 Lastly, will you be doing a video on how all of the Fairlight DAW functions interface with Resolve’s video editing, color grading and fusion? Again, what a timely and GREAT video. Thank you.
@CrisBlyth
@CrisBlyth Жыл бұрын
Hello Toney ! I'm glad you liked the video ! Now to start off, my EVO system does seem to have things that the current Resolve doesn't have YET.. Like full midi note and VST instrument support. Now, it CAN record VST instruments, and they've JUST included a measures and bars / beats display on the timeline (which as it happens is REALLLY similar to what's on the EVO, so I wonder if they just dusted off the code and re implemented it. However, my feeling is that Resolve WILL get these updates. Also, if you are recording bands and don't need midi then Resolve RIGHT NOW is really great. Everything on the desk is modular and can also be accessed through software, so you could purchase a desk with the minimal parts and fill it up over time. I believe the desk in this configuration (inducing monitors, control surfaces, faders etc) is around $30K. So, to your last question. I will be doing a video showing Resolve and it's other parts, however, the EVO doesn't run the complete resolve. Resolve encapsulates the 'Fairlight EVO' system on their 'Fairlight' page. However, it does seem that I can export from resolve to EVO to do the audio part. So, I'll be investigating this. I just finished recording my daughters newest EP, and I'm SO thrilled by how it all turned out. Working on this system is SUCH a joy to use.

Fairlight looks great - for mixing and tracking. However, if you are doing electronic music with MIDI, there is none. well here’s the thing.. (and I’ll be showing in another episode) the EVO supports midi, Vst and VST instruments :) .. Now, that code is somewhere .. and resolve 18 can see midi keyboards attached.. so it’s not a flying leap to ‘switch on’ the midi note editing etc .. I’ll post that soon :)

@@CrisBlyth That would be pretty cool. Ah classic fairlight it's good to see where they came from & how the UI has changed, I see some people in the comments talking about fairlight midi tracks not being supported in resolve & I agree it sucks, at that 18.1 has music grid support so maby they might finally get arround to adding it back in, I think I get the reason why they didn't add it tho it kind of detracks from resolve being the ultimate onlineing tool so logically it dosen't make sence as a music daw as its a mastering daw but maby just maby times be a chageing and it will be doing both eventually 🤔🤔 😉, What else would you like fairlight to do just interested 🤔🤔

@@CrisBlyth Fusion compete directly with nuke tho, so I'd personally say that a tad unlikely but I would love USD,3rd party render engine support + UE plugin mainly because that will achieve the same thing, I do wonder if nuke has a patent on exr shuffle nodes tho hence why it's not part of fusion (& maby hope bmd can expand the number of exr channels)

@@mariotriforce I agree, it's probably very unlikely, but would say that Nuke is in a totally different price category, so I feel they don't compete in reality, and I know companies that are already writing plugins to do so, much like people did for 'motion' for FCPx (which is crazy that it's not native!), but it would be good to see it natively - However I agree with you.. prolly never gonna happen ! :)

As the Fairlight tab in Resolve was based on the Fairlight EVO, which you probably know was a very robust system, it's in Black Magic's hands whether they fully exploit what the EVO could do and bring it into Resolve... heres' hoping... (y'know.. VTSi support, Midi editing etc.. :) )

So, at the moment, the midi implementation is only on the EVO Fairlight software, not in V18 of the normal resolve software. However, I am seeing potential clues that they are going to add it back in. Like seeing the tempo for bears and measures, which looks almost identical to the implementation on EVO. I’ve done another video which shows this.. I’ll add a link :)

Nice demo - though I think it's rather simplistic being "pretend" - but I have a bigger question !~~! (I've got my ears on.) If you were to prioritize your purchase for a gradual investment - in other words could you with your next video discuss generally what you would buy first and why? And the reason is that thing is taking up as much space as the first minicomputer and costs as much. What can you do with a $2,500 budget, $5,000, etc. And what is really kind of upper-middle-class excess? Are you having fun - yes. But do you really need all that gear to have 85% of it?

Hi ! The good thing is the newest version of resolve can address the standard HUI emulation, so you can use the control surfaces of your choice. However, I feel that this center part, the 'editor' would be my first choice, but it IS pricy. There is a 'desktop editor' that has faders built in, but nothing really comes close to all these addressable keys. The combination of hardware and software really works well here.

@@CrisBlyth Yeah I think I figured this out. It's a business model similar to premium subscriptions that is based on capitalized businesses, that are getting money at 14x the rate that they can earn it. So the markup is about 10x cost instead of more usual 4x. There's no other choice - and it's something long practiced in the media production business for that reason. Which means that for non-capitalized businesses you are way better off using a mouse - unless you've got serious production aspirations and a lot of cash you didn't have to earn. Consumer credit just doesn't support that, and line of credit on Real Estate is shutting the door as well.

As a professional user, Fairlight was a straightforward choice. It is rock solid, reliable, doesn't require constant updating, uses windows platform that enables server integration and file indexing, allows user profile management, loads all available plugin formats, imports and exports from / to every broadcast format, wonderful audiobase / soundeffects database, incredibly fast operation, stunning , accurate operation, EQ, DYNAMICS, AUDIO FX as standard, Metering, and after 20 years in use, still incredible . Currently investing in Fairlight Hardware panels to replace /avoid further dissapointing efforts from ' Rabid - Blow Ghouls' .

More then 4000 Euri for this controller? Can I find the Resolve to spend that? Nope! I see the advantages of the ergonomics but everything else you do reminds me of the workflow of my trusted old Roland VS2480. By the way: As far as the RSI aspects are concerned I always use a tablet (call it a Fairlight lightpen without the cable hassle if you want.). Would I want one? If I'd earn it all back and still generate a good income I very well might. Without the economic argument buying something new every time there is a slight technological improvement is akin to feeding your inner addiction. The evil Protools boys (etc.) know that and use that as a marketing tool.
@CrisBlyth

yeah the controller is expensive but the large Pro Tools desks are very expensive and many of them are now bricked due to software updates. I TOTALLY agree about using a pen. When editing I only use a pen and a vertical mouse if I really need to. Also, I have an old roland VS1680 and it was really nimble to work also ! - fun times :) thanks for your comment !

Not sure how I feel about this. The Fairlight inside davinci sucked donkey balls. Constant glitches, random bugs with audio changes (random phasing, clicks, etc). I don't care how flashy it is, I want stable sound.
@CrisBlyth
@CrisBlyth Жыл бұрын
you are correct; it did suck multiple donkeys balls in the early days and wasn’t a patch on the stability of the EVO system, however it has developed in leaps and bounds over the next few versions. It’s not perfect and I feel they’ve been concentrating more on ‘mouse’ users, but stability wise it’s not a concern now (V18)

I agree, and I hope that Black Magic re-instate the MIDI and VST capabilities that are laying dormant in the Fairlight code. This EVO console does have MIDI, and the bars/beats that Black magic have recently introduced show that they are re-using existing code. I think it's a very exciting prospect, knowing that there's an internal structure that supports MIDI.

@@CrisBlyth To use 4 or six finger short cuts you do not use your intuition for the creative flow. You use it for the system. So no contact with words, strings and pianokeys or drumhead... harp .... whatever your instrument may be. We are back at recording sessions occupied by musicians themselves. These shortcuts take a long time to learn. I think the sample system you are restoring IS intuitive for those wizards that want to go there. But for mixing we need more single duty knobs and faders. My humble opinion.
