In a world-first study we have the first indications of whether medicinal cannabis can benefit people with insomnia. It’s early days, so the evidence is still growing… but the early results are promising.
Dr Jennifer Walsh leads the research and education teams at the Centre for Sleep Science at the University of Western Australia and the sleep physiology research team at the West Australian Sleep Disorders Institute at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Jennifer’s research focuses on investigating the causes of, and treatments for, sleep disorders including obstructive sleep apnoea and insomnia. Since 2016 her research has included investigating the use of medicinal cannabis for the treatment of sleep disorders. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I started smoking cannabis since my teenage. Got addicted to cigarettes for over 18 years. I suffered severe depression and mental disorder. Cigarettes addiction actually destroyed my life. Not until my wife recommended me to psilocybin mushrooms treatment. Psilocybin treatment saved my life honestly. 8 years totally clean. Never thought I would be saying this about mushrooms.

100% agree I used to have Psychosis and paranoid thoughts like "people thinking about me talking about me etc. Very odd behavior after getting off Adderall from 7-16. Antidepressants at 18-29. 31 now. I took way to much, but took about 20g of Gold caps (Psilocybin containing mushroom) I analyzed my entire life. The emotions that came out helped me understand behavior etc more. Wont ever need to do it again because I'm happy and contempt forever, but I wish more people did this to alter their perception of reality. Would help with healing much trauma

My humble experience with insomnia (for years) Wake up early, everyday even if you haven't had enough sleep, take a nap later after midday, but wake up early like 30min before the sunrise, try to inhale that fresh air just before the sunrise and get exposed to the light of the rising sun. I've done it for years now, best quality sleep, no more waking up at 3am questioning your existence on earth hh and better mornings especially if you take walks

I quit weed a month ago and my sleep has been slowly getting better and better. The first 3 weeks I have had the craziest dreams, so vivid and memorable. I almost never dreamed when getting high. Currently on day 23 of being sober and my body is slowly normalizing itself. I'm grateful for my experiences with weed but my chronic daily use was harming me in ways I hadn't noticed. Irritability, zombie like days, and a lack of effective motivation to get things done. I'm giving myself a year to be sober, and maybe I'll go back to it but in edible form and only on off days like weekends or celebrations. Hope peace for you all ✌️

Good Talk. Chill thing about Canada is 4 cannabis plants per household. 10 to 12 pounds per growing season, 1 season indoors, and 1 season outdoors. You always know what's in your own dried flower. And what buds you need to best address the ailments in need. In North America, opiates kill, bud doesn't.

I have hyper-vigilance stemming from service related PTSD which in turn causes me to experience anxiety, and most nights I can't sleep all the way through. Since I retired I have been using a full spectrum tincture and coupled with my CPAP, I get the best sleep I have had since I was a kid. Anecdotal for sure, but until and unless the federal government legalized or reschedules cannabis, the scientific studies cannot be done, so anecdotal evidence is all we have, at least in the states.

Medicinal cannabis has been revolutionary to my sleep. As a shift worker of 20 years my sleep is generally awful. I use a very small amount about once every 10 to 14 days, I get 10 to 12 hours sleep that night and the effect on more restful sleep lasts about a week. I can see it in my smart watch sleep scores as well as subjectively feel the difference. For me it somehow breaks the circuit of waking up in the middle of the night and being unable to get back to sleep. It is also waaaaaaayyyyyy less expensive than the combined psychology/acupuncture/massage combo that helped but less reliably. I really hope that we can start moving more quickly on legalisation.

She seems like someone amazing to work with... About the topic I knew the answer was gonna be still far away, as a recreative consumer I've felt some days that it helps me with having better sleep, but others can even make the contrary effect, but as she said, that may be because of the quality of the plant and the dosis, but thouse are factors that at least in my country are uncrontrolable for consumers, it's great to see the science researching more about this topic.

Im 60, and I've had sleep issues my entire life. It got considerably worse after having bypass surgery at age 41. I also have diabetic peripheral neuropathy in the hands and feet, which causes insane levels of pain, and a bad back that makes it worse. I've been taking Temazepam for sleep and an opioid for pain for years. It's helpful, but I was still only sleeping every other night. Recently I've been using cannabis at night. I grow my own indica (Grandaddy Purple), which I infuse into butter. and make cookies and brownies with it. The neighborhood kis keep coming back for more. Just kidding! I'm now sleeping better now than I have in at least 20 years. I still miss a night of sleep now and then, especially on bad pain nights, but overall it's made a world of difference.

@@stephaneboisjoli1320 OK yes, with the advent of cultivating, farming and fine-tuning, there has been a multitude, an explosion of new strains. That being said, yes, some will be high in THC versus the CBD or vice versa. CBD is typically what’s more medicinally beneficial. Getting rid of the pain, relieving anxiety, lessening nausea… THC, or as it’s known scientifically, delta nine tetrahydrocannabinol is what has the psychoactive compound’s. That being said, THC is what causes you to have the crazy trips and the like… That’s what differentiates a medicinal doser versus a stoner.

I fall asleep quickly, still have dreams wake up at 6am every day, retired but active. I do not dose throughout the day. An ounce will last me 3+ months and I refill at a state approved dispensary tested for contamination, not on the street. I sleep through the night in bed by 9:30 and up at 6: 00 7 days a week; this had never happened NEVER! I continue with my mental health program religiously along with daily swimming and or Yoga. I have medication-induced insomnia. Pot definitely helps me sleep, at least for a few hours. It really helps with racing thoughts and anxiety at night, too, so my mind can rest. But it only lasts as long as I'm high, which is like 2-3 hours. So it's not a permnent insomnia cure. I take a prescribed medication for that. Pot is a suppliment, it doesn't do it on its own, but if you have mild or episodic insomnia due to anxiety/worry, yes, it probably will help you. Make sure you get indica, NOT sativa. Sativa is energetic and can cause anxiety and paranoia if you're prone to anxiety. Indica is relaxing.

Glad to hear it’s having that positive effect for you. I’m not a scientist but a couple things I have learned: there is 0 tangible difference between “indica” and “sativa.” The two different species of cannabis have been interbred and hybridized for so many decades that a biological distinction no longer exists. What’s more impactful on the “elevating” vs “mellowing” effect is the concentration of THCA vs other cannabanoids such as CBD. Also, I too have experienced how cannabis can work as a powerful sleep aid. But something I realized is that when I smoke before I sleep I have ABSOLUTELY ZERO DREAMS. Which is actually a serious problem because that means you’re not going into REM sleep. And REM sleep is super important for memory consolidation and emotional processing. So while cannabis might be super helpful for FALLING asleep, it’s actually kind of a hindrance to your QUALITY of sleep. The benefits might certainly put weight the drawbacks in your case and I’m not trying to tell you you’re doing ANYTHING “wrong.” But I do wish more people knew about the different ways cannabis affects sleep. E.g. I wish she talked about it more in this video.

But since I have stopped I started dreaming again. I don’t see how it can be helpful if it makes you not fall into rem sleep. I don't need data to know that CBD works for me. The first time i took it, I felt a wave of relaxation move down through my body. It puts me quickly to sleep, and I get a deeper, more restful sleep than I have ever experienced. That said, it can build up in the system, and over time, the effects will stop. So, I take a break for a few days, and when the CBD decreases to the right level, the effects kick in again (and without taking any). It's a remarkable substance.

Yes, it def helps you fall asleep, but it also makes you stop dreaming, fyi. It suppresses REM entirely and dreaming is sorta important. I just recently quit smoking after 25 years off all day everyday wake and bake and essentially stopped dreaming for all those years while using it regularly. A year out from quitting and now I dream all the time again. This is one of the truths ppl don't talk about much. Well, the scientists do, but all the romancing of the plant, it's not ALL good. Also, I've spent my whole life dealing with serious issues of anxiety, and for many years the weed helped those episodes, but then at some point it exasperated them, and now that I've stopped the anxiety is virtually non existent. So there is a lot of grey area with cannabios and it can and does change for ppl over time. Just sharing my experience.

everyone who sold it knows you get called at night by people who need cannabis to sleep, many get really crazy about it. It is maybe the most dependent experience people have with cannabis. You fall asleep quick, you won't dream as much or not remembering your dreeams at all and you can feel a little hangover when waking up. It is an effective treatment for symptoms but impedes the progress to get "cured".

Having smoked on average about 1 gram a day of cannabis for decades this is easy to answer. It definitely helps you sleep well, although it does prevent dreaming properly. I gave up about 6 weeks ago and now can't get a full night's sleep and have trouble getting to sleep but I do remember dreams I have quite clearly. I now wake up with a much clearer head but can feel a bit sleepy in the daytime. The best study and quantity to try in my opinion would be to take about a third to half a gram in the evening, that should give a good night's sleep without the 'hangover '. I am writing this at 2.30 in the morning as I can't get to sleep!

Depends where I'm from, you can get two types of weed. Locally grown (aka Shash) or imported mostly from Europe (aka loud). Shash is typically grown outside in fields and not much is done to maintain the plant. It's been that way for probably hundreds of years(I'm assuming). While smoking with my parents and grandparents, they typically say it's hasn't changed much since their younger days. I prefer this one because it often feels like a very balanced high. Loud on the other hand can be a number of different strains. I feel than smoking those once in a while is okay. There have been times when I felt nauseated.
@Sam3532

I think if it was legal a lot more people would prefer to grow weaker strains more akin to shash for a more balanced high, modern western genetics/strains of cannabis are so thc dominant and bred for flavours/smells along with high thc for a heavy cerebral effect.. I guess that sells better and for more money but I’d love to have a more balanced high for everyday smoking

Reading some of the comments with the crazy spelling and grammar is a huge clue about how much weed some of these people use. I would urge people who take meds to see if weed increases the half life of their meds. It works a lot the same way grapefruit does, but not always on the same meds. A friend was taking thyroid and using weed and ended up overdosing on thyroid because the weed increased the half life. My friend lived, but that may not be the case with all drugs. Check it out people. Be safe, not sorry.

Aside from the fact that everyone experiences the effects of cannabis differently, I think there needs to be more research done into the paradoxical effects that seem to arise in long-term users before any definitive judgement can be made. An enormous amount of anecdotal data points to the potential for cannabis to swap its effects (i.e. causing anxiety instead of treating anxiety, or causing insomnia rather than helping insomnia) at some point in a regular user's lifetime. Many of these paradoxical effects seem to emerge most prominently among 20-somethings who previously used cannabis during their teen years, hence suggesting that perhaps its interference with brain development causes some kind of developmental disorder which leads to the paradoxical effects, although there have been a few cases where even people who are older experience the paradoxical effects. But it's not enough to look at new or infrequent users and say that their experience is universal and overall positive, particularly when certain conditions like Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS) tend to emerge in chronic long-term users.

Random testing for THC in drivers has definitely resulted in more accidents caused by fatigue. RDT was introduced and the road toll has gone up. Removing thousands of stoned drivers doing 10ks under the speed limit probably didn't help either 😅.
