@@mac2312 totally true. GTA V was the first one in the series i didnt bother buying because i didn't care to play online, and i cleared the story in 3 days and had no drive revisit the game. The characters all felt hollow. Lamar was a homeless version of CJ and michael's ambition was to be.....some hollywood producer. They spent a lot of time on trevor and he was quite literally a homeless crazy person with no conscience. Non of them felt relateable in any way

GTA5 is about how the American dream is a lie, no matter how rich you get, you're still going to be miserable and you're still going to be screwed over by people richer than you. Each main character represents a part of that, Trevor is meant to be the only character that knows how much the American dream screws you over and makes you miserable, pretty much making him the smartest one of the three protagonists and the only one that's actually content. He does whatever he can to stay away from the system, which makes him incredibly loyal to his friends, as opposed to Michael who embraces the life but is constantly miserable and getting screwed over while screwing over people himself, without him realizing it

the loss of Lazlow is what really hit hard for me. Its not only did they lose they guy who wrote most of the parodies, but they lost the longest running character in the series. Growing up with these games it was cool to see what would happen to him, where he was during the 80s and 90s in vice city and san andreas, he had some deep lore in the gta universe. It was one of my favourite parts of the game.

I don't think I'm worried about the story because theres a very good chance the story was written and finalised before Dan Houser's departure (lots of developers leave a company when their job is done), not to mention his brother Sam is still there. I strongly feel the story will go down a more realistic and less tongue in cheek path, like RDR2 did. GTA V was mostly about comedy and I wasn't drawn to that. I loved RDR2's more grounded and emotional tale. It had dark moments and lighter moments but they were all human and with GTA 6 tackling a story inspired by Bonnie and Clyde I think THAT'S what they will do. I DO think there is a good chance this could be the last game that has the super high quality bar that Rockstar is known for but given the humongous time gap they have between games I don't think that will bother too many people. I know for certain there is NO WAY it can live up to the hype the community has generated even if it is still a certified banger.

Thank you SO MUCH for mentioning the dev cycle at the end of the video and explaining what most people don't seem to realise: game writing is a process that usually goes on well into the last year of development, or at best the second-to-last one. I work in game localization and, almost every time a script comes to us more than a year before release, it's still in a barely coherent state. The two exceptions I can think of were 10-to-12 hours long, very narrative focused, very linear single-player games. I'm working on games that will release in 3 months and that were still going through significant script revisions just a few months ago. The idea that some have expressed in comments, including in this very video, that Dan Hauser "may have already worked on the script before he left in 2020" is actually almost insane. Four years before release? At best they had a general outline, if even that. Specially in an open-world game, there's no point in expanding the script too much beyond this initial stage until you actually get to design and test levels, spaces, characters, art, mechanics, etc. It's not as simple as just penning a full movie-like script and then dumping it on the whole studio to find a way to make it all work as a game exactly as written. No, the writing team is constantly changing things according to what's actually possible and/or works as an interactive piece. Besides that, don't you people remember Rockstar was accused of crunch during Red Dead 2's development, and it turned out that it was just the writing team? They were pulling all-nighters about 2 years before release. Why do you think that happened? It's not only because the game is big. It's also because they didn't have everything written down four years before as some want to believe (thanks to hopium overdose, I'd say). So, chances are very, very high that Houser didn't write more than a general outline for the game - and four years is more than enough for even that to get changed. I won't be surprised a single bit if he even doesn't get his name in the credits.

ShreddedNerd has a pretty good video about it, and yes I'm absolutely worried that GTA6 will be infested with it considering some of Rockstar's interviews about being more "socially mindful" and not "punching down" with their humor anymore. EDIT: 10:56 This instantly reminded me of that Joe Rogan podcast where he had a NYTimes journalist on and she called Tulsi Gabbard an "Assad toadie," and then when Rogan pressed her on why she'd call her that, she had absolutely no answer. People are already playing make-believed at that point but then rage out when a character is non-white.. Same as I don't feel it detract from the story when a character is race swapped in a script where the whole script of the game was retconned to be American when it was initially written to be set in Sweden (Alan Wake 2) If the actual story is good then it is good, if people get more fair representation in media I see no issue with it as long as the actual story sticks to the same plot points

I dont know if im necessarily worried about the story, but i am definitely worried that theyll focus on purely online like they did with 5. As someone who doesnt play online, usually one single player games. I played gta 5 once, fininished it. I worry that having a female protagonist (the first female protagonist) will push the writers into a preachy direction and thus tone down the dirty humor, especially if it pokes fun of women, feminism and etc... As we have seen with other franchises becoming female ego boosters whether it's video games or movies. That is not to say there can't be great female characters but surely the temptation to go down that path for a more progressive writer is there. Just look at Saints row for example. One of the great things about GTA is the ability to poke fun at all groups or ideologies similar to that of South Park. I have a bad feeling that with the departure of Dan Houser and other founders the Voice of reason keeping GTA on the right path will no longer be there and the excuse of "not punching down" will be used for toning down the raunchy comedy. And I think RDR 2 has some examples of that. One being sex and prostitution something that was noticeably missing in an era where brothels where prevalent and somehow did not make it in to a game where you can virtually do anything. That is a small gripe but it shows the potential for shifting towards a more gender neutral GTA . Time will tell.

Well I personally didn’t love GTA 5’s writing as much as past games. It was fine wasnt bad or anything like some games we get today. However just because there are different people doesn’t necessarily mean it will be bad. ALSO people these days think everything is trash…say the game and writing is incredible but because someone of note combed through the entire story line by line word by word and found something a bit cringey, not really funny, “too woke”, or just doesn’t make sense….then next thing you know everyone online especially Twitter, youtube comments and KZbinrs, tiktok accounts, etc is all saying the game sucks and is complete trash. I remember someone saying Jedi Survivor, God of War Ragnarok, and now Spider-Man 2 is/was trash. Because they were hyper focusing on one thing that they disliked. So I think regardless of how good the game will be people will still say it is trash and look to the missing people that left as the reason to why it sucks. I am not saying that any criticism for video games isn’t justified I just am saying that a lot of times it gets blown a bit it of proportion and becomes this mob mentality type thing.

The graphics in the reveal trailer are usually a downgrade from the ones you see in the final game on release day. Trust me bro. I honestly see no issue with pre-ordering as long as you do your research on the game and company. If it’s a game that has no real information on how good the quality will be, or the company doesn’t have the best track record, then don’t pre-order. If there’s a lot of information and trailers on the game that shows it’s clearly a good quality product and the company is reliable, then pre-order if you want. Chances are it will be a good game.

I like watching Luke, but I'm not interested in this one, I just wanted to comment on the clickbaity title. Of all of the game developers I've played over the decades - there are very very few that I will never have a concern over story - Rockstar and it's GTA series are one of these. They always deliver a solid story, solid tech, solid graphics, solid content etc etc. They have always been the ones setting the bar high - and GTA 6 will be no different.

The main part of GTAs writing might have been done by the time they left, since Rockstar puts a lot of time into polish compared to others. So there’s hope. With that said, their writing was masterful, basically the Coen Brothers of the gaming industry. That’s not gonna be replaced. If the director and writer is the reason for a film or game’s quality, then that genie isn’t getting back in the bottle after departure. It’s the most common reason why some franchise becomes bad, but people treat it like that doesn’t matter. But it’s all that matters, it’s the entire reason for everything that becomes memorable. Underestimating the writing is ignoring “why” we do something in a game. If we don’t have an emotional investment reason for doing anything in a game, the atmosphere and reason to do anything gets lost. Without them, Rockstar is dead, they were the whole package, and now they’re not there anymore. Rockstar’s gonna be a zombie company, making shallow echoes of what we loved. Kind of poetic that they made Red Dead 2 and it focused so much on the old world dying in face of this new “civilization”, all while we, like the band of bandits, will feel like the death of Rockstar’s quality is looming around the corner.
