Slight correction: the B-1s readiness rate hovers around 40-50%, which means that at any one time, about 4 in 10 are ready for action. In other words, out of the 45 B-1s we currently have in service, about 20 are mission capable. That's pretty atrocious, but it's not quite so bad as 4 planes over the entire fleet.

I can't understate what it looks, sounds and feels like when a B1 goes from zero to afterburner on a runway. Experienced this take off at an airshow. They were able to get off the deck pretty quickly (around 2k feet), then the aircraft went completely 75 degrees to the horizontal. Felt like watching a fighter jet taking off, not the massive aircraft it actually is..... only one experience was even more jaw dropping, watching a SR71 take off.

Haven't heard a B1 take off but Avro Vulcans with 4 Olympus engines were incredibly loud, it was only one in my case but in the 1960s with 4 minutes before Russian ICBMs would have hit their bases they used to scramble entire squadrons faster...

Flew a simultaneously runway departure with 2 B-1s (I retired as a B-1 weapons systems officer several years ago) at Nellis at 5 am many years ago...base public affairs was inundated with noise complaint phone calls. @@theboothy91 Fair enough. I do however regularly work on the base and I most certainly do know approximately how many are there. Even if I wasn't ever on base you can SEE them on the flight line from well off base. Also, being a private pilot here we are regularly vectored over Ellsworth when RAP is using 14 so we can see the flight line from the air as well. Not to mention that I regularly share air space with the B1s and have for the last 25 years that I've been flying here. Does that satisfy you that I might know what I'm talking about or do you think you need to poke in to stir things up some more?

Q: Why does DCS always have the drone-bones taxi to the end of the furthest runway? A: That allows more time for strafing by the Zeroes. ;) Watching those bones taking off... reminds me of the time I was taxiing up for take off at microsized Hartford/Conn airport in a nano-sized 12-seat/twin-prop job and the bloody CONCORDE was roaring down the runway, turning the tarmac fly-paper-sticky with those blowtorches. Watching the B1b bombing...it looks like strafing, but with 500 lb boomboom. Soad to hear Cap say there are only 6 bones in flying shape... what an amazing plane. Back in the 80's I watched one do a wing-standing turn and circle over the Hillsboro Airport (Oregon) during an airshow... so incredibly loud !!

Readiness was below 10% for a while a couple years ago, but they retired the worst cases, bringing them to the current 45 B-1B Lancers in service in the US Air Force and Reserve. Some upgrades were done and more spares obtained, resulting in a present readiness of about 50%. So in a crisis the US could conceivably task over 20 B-1Bs for combat.

Thank you for the use of the imperial measurement system. Us Americans really have no concept of Kilos. Celsius meters, and litres we just choose not to use because the measurements are not impressive enough. For example 110 degree Fahrenheit in Texas sound was more deadly than 30 something. And a litre is just a way to get cheap for Soda as a gallon is way bigger ans we still sell milk by it.

There were some ground-based aircraft thrown in as well, mostly Marines based in the Solomons.

when i was little we lived in Abilene and they had B-1's there, I got to go onboard one and sit in the cockpit at an airshow. we used to see them all the time, along with c-130's. one time they had some c-130 drill at the airbase and there was just a string of c-130s in the air, i counted more than 40 before we got to the mall.

I think the Bone that got shot down was hit by shots aimed at the one in front of it. Perhaps they need to have wider spacing between them?

They recently retired 17 b-1s leaving a total of 45. Not sure how many of those are ready to fly at any one time tho.

It's pretty typical from some things I've read to plan on 1/3 of an active force ready at any given time. 1/3 on duty, 1/3 training up, and 1/3 in maintenance. So that puts about 15 active with another 15 readily available if needed (the one working up)

Mission capable rate was down in the single digits a few years ago with its CAS support mission, is up over 60% now. 8 airframes are dedicated to new weapons testing, plus a further 9 aircraft down in depot including 2-4 in the structural repair line leaves about 30 aircraft to work with.
