He was interviewed on the "event horizon" channel about a month ago. He speculates on how a microbial life form could adjust, in theory, to the sulfuric acid in the clouds. This was a fantastic interview. This is so information dense, and fills in so many missing pieces to the scientific process involved. Mass media does not focus on the details as they only focus on the sensational aspect of the topic. Thank you for rounding this out, and thank you Dr. Clara for taking the time to fill in the public with approachable language on a complex process!
@FlyingSavannahs3 жыл бұрын
A great interview! Dr. Sousa-Silva is a fantastic spokesperson for describing how some simple molecule can have such large implications. She also does well portraying the complexity and yes, drudgery typical of scientific investigations. Also necessary for a successful interval is what is asked. The questions were exceptional for allowing Dr. Sousa-Silva to flesh out both the process details and the implications of the findings. Well done Alex and all. I will caveat that the discussion of lifeforms on Venus got a little fanciful when describing the angst of beings witnessing their demise based only on the discovery of potential metabolism because of an inorganic molecule. The exchange describing the hubris of humans when it comes to discovering that the universe consistently shows a lack of care for what we are and what we do, was wonderfully expressed. It is this impartial nature of the universe we consistently affirm with exploration that inspires me with awe. The wonder for wonder's sake! Beautifully described.

We have found life on Earth at ever increasing depths. If we assume that Venus did have life, before the runaway greenhouse effect, then it is reasonable that some of it could have survived below the surface, even if it would be harmed by the sulphuric acid in the atmosphere. Similarly the elements necessary to sustain that life may still be present below the surface, and the life there would have adapted as the conditions changed on the surface, with whatever implications that had for survivability deeper down.
@Temp0raryName3 жыл бұрын
@Peter Mortensen Because Venus does not have the same internal structure as Earth. We have shown that the surface has not been affected by the interior, for a long time. So the outer layers are well insulated from the hot core. Therefore plenty of scope for a zone that is not as hot as the surface.

A question for a philosopher? The way she answered the question was amazing, I’ve never heard such a great explanation for if we find life on other planets and her evaluation of our universe and existence. I love art and I understand a large portion of that comes from the arrogance of human’s believing they are more special than they are, but I feel if we took our species off a pedestal, and had a more scientific approach to life and the advancement of our species, it would be amazing what we could accomplish.

This was an exciting talk, both for the topic and for the way it was presented! I've rarely heard someone talking so enthusiastic about PH3 - and I'm a chemist! It would be really exciting to see IR spectra and analyse them for presence of PH3, because this would also confirm the recently evaluated old MS data from a Venus probe that showed good evidence for several PH/PD species. And I must admit that I haven't seen a more attractive molecular astrophysicist yet :D
