Highly unlikely but may happen when relationship deteriorates, if India buys US weapons system instead of Russian. Russia may then sell more weapons to China and Pakistan such as Admiral Kuznetsov, kilo class subs, s400 etc. Also if the Russians platforms sold to India were broken such as INS Vikramaditya or S400 and they sold the real deal to Pakistan and China that lead to a downing of Indian air or sea asset like a carrier then India may fight Russia indirectly via proxy. India could accuse Russia of collusion with Pakistan and join the US coalition. As much as Russia wants to sell arms and oil, china could buy more and they are the richer adjacent trading partner who are more likely to face down the US with them.

As an Indian, just one caveat. Our soldiers don't have low motivation in general. Every kid in every village *DREAMS* of donning the uniform, naive as it may sound. Anyone who makes officer rank becomes talk of the town and every soldier is treated with due respect. Irregularities exist but for the most part, the aforementioned stands true.

Thing is, Russia has a lot more experience in combined arms conventional warfare, has a more stable economy (although both their economies are trash) and can build effective domestic tech, unlike India who can barely build competing tanks by themselves. Once India industrialises like the Chinese though, they will be a major world power but that’s a long way away.

The Indian strategy should be to establish a defensive line at the edge of the mountains, dig in for defensive based mountain warfare, and do harass missions using small groups/elite forces along the lines of the Russians to encourage the Russians to come into the mountains where mechanized forces are actually at a disadvantage. Fighting in the open terrain dives the Russians the kind of war they are trained and best equipped for. Forcing the fighting to be in the mountains would negate their advantages in every way while maximizing the usefulness of the Indian forces. You don't have to occupy a disputed territory to force your enemy's hand. You just have to threaten it and poke their troops every once in a while to make them come after you where you are based. It would also shorten and protect Indian supply lines while extending Russian ones. Air strikes, artillery attacks, and cruise missiles are not as effective in mountainous terrain as they are in open fields. This would put more stress on the Russian vehicles in general since they would be racking up km after km just getting food and fuel to their forces, increasing the odds of breakdowns and encountering road hazards. It would also allow the Indians to observe when supply deliveries were happening to front line areas, allowing the harassing attacks to be more effective. You don't have to cut supply lines to stop your enemy when you can just stretch them in distance to their limits. This overall strategy would turn the war into a protracted one with Russian troops having few victories to maintain moral. With India's vast population (#2 at 1300 million compared to #9 at 147 million. That's nearly 10 times bigger!) and larger economy (#3 at 3.2 trillion USD compared to 1.6 trillion USD), they can literally just buy a parity of equipment to what Russia could add to the field over time, even at double the price per effectiveness while using a draft and the favorably of mountain combat to infantry combat to out man Russian forces easily. You have to equip all these new Indian troops, but infantry is cheaper than mechanized infantry and far easier to supply.
