Ukraine can run an insurgency in Russian-captured territory. To keep all that turf, Russia would need several hundred thousands of soldiers, forever. The Russian speaking Ukrainians in seized territories will expect some benefit from Russian control. Right now they have demolished cities, towns, missing bridges, no services. How will they have employment in that environment? Will Russia foot the $100 billion bill to rebuild? That is a minimum, only for Donbas. That sounds like a giant headache for Russia. What foreign territory have they ever rebuilt after a war? They don't have the resources or the mentality for that. They are great at demolishing, not so good at reconstruction I suggest.

Ukrainians need more weapons and training. Their will to fight is unmatched. Everyday, people are pouring into Ukraine to take up arms against the Russians but they need to be better trained, which NATO should accelerate. Some of the Ukrainian soldiers need to be relieved and fresh soldiers come in for effective counter attack. It’s not just long range weapons needed but APCs, tanks and lots of attack drones for effective counter attacks. Kherson still has civilians living there, so will be close encounter. Thank you for that information. I am so frustrated at the west for giving Ukraine 10 of some type of military hardware when they need 10x that amount due to the size of their country and the fact that they are fighting on numerous fronts. I realize that the Ukrainians are still using a lot old Russian artillery pieces and that they are running out of ammunition because the west has created all new weapons systems so they are losing artillery to attacks and to a shortage of missiles. I am a historian but modern weaponry is not something that I have researched. I learn about what a weapon is capable of, more often than not, through the comments section. I always pause the video to read what information people are contributing and I always come away better informed about a weapons capability than the reporter.

The problem with advanced weapon systems (like long range artillery/rocket systems) is that western powers/NATO members dont have much extra they can quickly spare without sacrificing/taking too much out of their own defense. Yes they could always order more from weapon manufacturers but getting new systems to replace anything that gets send to Ukraine takes time, many months or even years. Thats the sad reality of things. The most what west can do to aid Ukraine is keep supplying them with ammunition and anti-tank weapons, to some extent also anti-air and anti-ship missiles

Some facts to consider: Russia has allocated only 10% of its military force to this operation and is outnumbered by the Ukrainian force. Ukraine has the second largest military in Europe after Russia. Russia also hasn’t sought to destroy Ukraine and its industries but rather to seek specific objectives with a stated goal of minimal collateral damage and winning hearts and minds (they’re not cluster bombing like Ukrainians did in Donbass or using white phosphorous like US did in Iraq). This war is nothing like Iraq or Afghanistan where American units were firing on an enemy that had no ability to effectively engage, the modern US military hasn’t been tested in a conventional war against a modern military.

@@sazzbot8874 Thank you for pointing that out. I have come across this same reasoning before but your answer is short and direct. Here's a question for you, If the Russians are withholding 90% of their weapons than why are they equipping the draftees of the Donbas and Luhansk breakaway regions with a rifle called a Mosin, which, according to Reuters was developed in the late 19th century and went out of production decades ago. I read an article from Reuters which stated that according to three people who saw conscripts from the separatist region are indeed armed only with that weapon. They also showed images shared on social media that showed Donbas fighters with Mosin rifles but Reuters has not been able to verify this independently. Either the Russians want to rid themselves of these people or they are running out of small arms to distribute. I saw a video that made the same claim but since the information on some of these videos is not always accurate I checked for a more reliable news source.

Well, that’s the reason they fled from Snake Island. The awereness that now with the arrival of the Himars on the other side of the waters, and harpoon missles pointing at any incoming ships - which the Ukrainians have sunk many of - that island would be practically impossible to defend. The last couple of weeks of heavily Ukrainian bombardement has really shown this reality, and the russians realized it too. Furthermore their military is really strained, and they dont have the material or soldiers that should be poured into keep the island, so they made a calculated choice to leave. Of course, all that mixed with a good russian lie that it was “goodwill” to NATO to leave the island. Yes, like the “goodwill” of Russia to leave the Kiev area after trying and failing for one month to conquer it.

If the US sent 50 HIMARS systems to Ukraine then it might really be a game changer for the war as a whole. But seeing that they have only promised to send eight, with only four operating currently, they will only be able to have isolated, local impacts. Destroying command posts or supply depots or air defense systems is a good achievement. Snake island is a good PR victory, and will allow the small number of Ukrainian air assets some greater freedom of action in the region. But unless the West gets really serious about helping Ukraine win, these systems are not going to kick the Russians out. They sure didn't stop Russia from capturing Lysychansk and the rest of Luhansk oblast.

Ukraine has domestically produced laser guided artillery munitions, as does Russia. Ukraine does not have as much as Russia. Scud missiles have similar range and accuracy as HIMARs ATACMs, 300 km max range. Russian Zircon missiles have a maximum range at least twice that. Ukraine needs support to level the playing field, western artillery is more of the same, not different. Insistence on the superiority of western artillery when near parity is evident invites the same mistake Putin made.

@@sarahbrown5073 I hope you and many others will (sooner rather than later) come to the understanding/conclusion that the current situation will not end well for the whole world without a drastic course correction occurring in Moscow. It’s unfortunate, but much like the majority have been asleep at the wheel regarding the mess that’s been created in their own countries over the years (whether that be due to laziness, distraction, brainwashing, indoctrination, or propaganda), much the same has been happening geopolitically regarding Putin’s regime and the pure unadulterated evil they possess and wish to unleash upon the world... When the USSR fell, what came with it besides the joy of many and the thoughts of all towards world peace, was the complete relaxation of preparedness in the west towards (or from) any perceived threat of any peer or near peer adversary, along with the well wishes of prosperity all around. And while that did happen, Putin (a complete nobody even within his own country at the time) felt betrayed by his own, and even more so towards those that helped his country disintegrate in the manner that it did (to him). You can research the series of events that ended with him eventually becoming the seat of power, regardless - what occurred in addition to them ending with him illegitimately becoming the defacto thief-in-law, was this deep seated hate and desire to return Russia to the all-encompassing empire it once was of centuries past, regardless of what happens to the countries, people, laws, or any other forms of international agreements, accords, conventions, or whatever else have you of today and how the world operates in the 21st century. And he’s not so secretly worked towards meeting this end ever since, using some of the best resources in the world psychologically to do so (see: Russian military/intelligence deception doctrine)... There’s far more to this story that I’m hoping more people will take the time to learn while they have the ability (and opportunity) to do so, as the world is in quite a rough spot at the moment and could use a whole lot more people looking at finding solutions of some sort... And just for you FYI - Russia isn’t communist anymore, but they are most definitely fascist...

What does concern me a lot is that a large percentage of the Ukrainian forces that we're in the Donbas region before the war started, and have stayed there to fight, were mostly decent quality, vastly experienced troops that have spent a lot of time fighting the Russians. These are the ones that have been on the frontlines during the non stop, massive artillery barrages that the Russians have fallen back on to have any success. These experienced troops have taken an enormous amount of KIA's, wounded and MIA's which means the quality of the Ukrainian troops would've gone down considerably.... which isn't good.

In fact, only a handful saw any combat at all. You also have advisors and those who help train the Syrians but these don't alter the situation much. It's a question of quality and quantity. The quality of Western equipment and weapons is superior to Russian ones. However, the quantity of what has been supplied to Ukraine so far is very inadequate. Yes, French CAESAR artillery guns are very powerful. But there are only 12 of them. Same thing with German artillery guns. Same everywhere. There are still plenty of Ukrainians volunteering to join the army, but turned away because there are no weapons for them. Everything is in short supply, including body armor, night vision, medical supplies, you name it. But in particular the heavy weapons needed for reversing Russian advances. Except for Boris Johnson, Western heads of governments have a strange attachment to Putin. They know that what he is doing is wrong and evil, and yet they "understand" him. Until his troops start invading their countries. I guess 3 generations ago heads of states similarly "understood" the old Adolf. It's a freaking shame.

Even all the artillery of the OTAN cant match theirs in number+ how can you supply 1000+. Russians have 3-500 piece or artillery with same/Superior range than Caesar. They have 50-100 motorized howitzers that outrange the German ones by 10-20km. And the end of that is, Russia product more howitzers and ammo per month than NATO in a year. The caesar's canon= 18 months of fabrication. The cost is 25+ 15xmm Russians ones or 15x-203 mm that Will require 3-6 months... Nato has many strenghs but not artillery. Not even in term of quality. The only non proven speculation is accuracy claimed with 100k$ each round. The qualities of Russians are quantity AND quality in term of endurance and quick to repair/improve, power too... With the insane splash damages... Ukrainians are saying that 777 are trash... For example.

Russian weapons are great on paper. In reality, plenty of tanks and APCs were broken and couldn't make in into Ukraine at the start of the war. The famous Armata, the only one that worked, couldn't make it to parade on its own. A lot of Russian-made body armor was found to contain cardboard where metal was required. Tires for military vehicles, made in China, regularly give out. This is the result of the enormous corruption in Russian society, including Russian military. Moreover, most of the high quality parts in Russian weapons and equipment is foreign-made. For example, Orlan-10 UAV contains Japanese optics. Actually, all except the body of this thing is Japanese. Now with the sanctions they are unlikely to get them. You should watch less Russian sources. They lie like they breathe. As for M777, they were sent without the GPS, i.e. incomplete. No wonder they are lousy. Why were they sent like that? For the same reason I described in the first post.

With the mayor and city government saying, "Don't we all love our wonderful city where there's so much harmony between everybody." I guess this is where "lies like a Ukrainian" comes from. China today (under Xi) is a carbon copy of Russia under Putin. They've been copying each other for so long, there's barely any difference. Except, of course, Russia is way weaker. Both are just disgusting genocidal maniacs, emulating old Adolf and his National Socialism. From my experience, there used to be China-made products everywhere (there are less now, but still plenty). And they were all cheaper and poorer quality than the competition. I know that the Chinese government recently is trying to switch to higher-priced higher-quality products, but it is not succeeding. As for Russian-made products, did you see them anywhere? I didn't. Which means that they could not compete on world market even when the international relations were better. Russia is making money only through selling raw resources, such as oil, gas, coal, etc. Now, if a country cannot make civilian goods of high quality, it stands to reason that it cannot make military goods of high quality. I am very aware that there is a lot of corruption in the West, particularly since in high circles it became fashionable to copy Chinese and Russian leadership, and especially wherever government and private spheres intersect. Still, I think it's not even close to the enormous corruption in China and Russia. Putin and company thought they'd essentially take Ukraine in 4 days. The professor is apt to point out that the single most important thing is for NATO to remain united and to continue to provide weapons and ammo. @zvexevz
@zvexevz Жыл бұрын
The fact that Ukraine is not a member of NATO is far from a "technicality." It is pretty much the reason Putin invaded, as the Russians desperately want Ukraine to remain outside of NATO. They've been saying that to the Americans and EU for over 30 years, since even before the fall of the Soviet Union. It's also the reason Putin felt he could invade Ukraine, with a good chance of success (though we see now how he wildly underestimated Ukrainian resistance), while going after countries like Estonia or Latvia remained off the table given that Russia would then be up against the full force of the NATO alliance. Though Western countries have been willing to send weapons to Ukraine, they have not sent any troops, as they would be forced to if Ukraine were a NATO member. And though those weapons have greatly aided Ukraine, and helped save the capital Kyiv, they haven't stopped Russia from capturing 20% of the country, and they are not being sent in large enough quantities to really turn the tide of the war. Ammunition shortages are becoming a big concern for Ukraine, and the amounts sent by the West are just not enough for the industrial scale of war currently being waged.

Hm, All things being equal, but it so appears that Rossia and its Ruscraniacs have changed their tactical methodology within the available doctrine and have switched to the Artillery prime role of crushing before letting the grunts occupy the rubble. Now I am not privy to any Rossian and/or Ruscraniac logistics or even info about that, but at the clip they are going, an estimated average of about 2500 to 3000 rounds of artillery shells must have passed through the individual artillery piece. Getting the ammunition there appears not to be the main issue and as such, the method has had some limited success in the Severo Donetsk salient. Now artillery is rather sensitive and subject to tube-wear which, when exceeded, will have strange but hardly desirable effects in range and accuracy or operational safety to name another significant item that may warrant some concern. Now the accuracy can be dealt with by volume for a while, but eventually (as from about 4000 rounds onwards) the grenades will start to leave the muzzle sideways and things will become really hairy for its own operators if this matter is not taken to hand in an efficient fashion. i.e. The artillery must be returned to a rear-area facility to have its tube refurbished and recalibrated. This matter can be a lengthy exercise and I am not even taking immediate logistics of the to-and-fro into account. The question is whether or not the Rossian and Ruscraniacs have actually performed any effort in rotating their artillery assets into a feasible schedule to keep their maintenance up to operational standards.

Today, Russia sent missiles to Kyiev and I feel utterly unjust that no missiles are sent to Moscow. I know Russia could destroy the entire planet (and so can we) but on the other hand, the harm done to Russia is "only" their 35000 dead soldiers and destroyed materiel and Russia is the aggressor. Ukraine - the invaded - on the other hand has been destroyed, suffered much many more deaths, many civilians are feeling the brutality of this colonial war. How can we make the people in Russia better understand what is war? Each people see this through their lenses, Africa does not care except which country will deliver grain to this region.

Back when the Soviet Union broke up after its lossing of the cold war Ukraine had rhe second largest army and nuclear missile force on the planet. But all that was later given to russia. This war is one sided because had the west not fallen for Putins bluff of a nuclear response the war would of been over.We are technically at war with russia given our direct level of support both financial and military.Russia has every right to attack the west but won't do so because it will 100% lose. The west wont get further involved because its fears a nuclear armed russia. This however can be solved in two ways. 1st form a world coalition like was done with Kuwait and give russia a chance to withdraw. If they refuse the coalition will provide full air and sea support to expel the russians from all of Ukraine. 2nd There needs to be a world declared law backed by the united nations that states no nuclear armed power can engage in the type of operations like russia conventionally then threaten to use its nuclear capability as a form of blackmail to avoid attack.

Unfortunately, the strategy must be to draw Russia to exhaust its munitions and resolve in the short term, yes, at the cost of Ukrainian cities and military. Then, the flood of western weapons begins and Russia pays dearly and their military is degraded for years if not a decade. The people in the outer regions have enough of their sacrifice and they rebel and Russia finally and for ever falls apart. Moscow is prevented from siphoning off the wealth of the outer regions and it becomes impoverished. A could dozen sleeping, new nations form once again. These people see prosperity for the first time in centuries. The supply of rare-earths opens up lowering the cost of batteries, which will help in reducing fossil-fuel use. NATO stays relevant for another generation and then slowly disintegrates. At that point, I can't say what will happen....

But there is a LOT more NATO could do; give air-cover for Ukraine, or even air-support, provide 'advisors' with the advanced weapons systems to facilitate immediate use as well as training, allow Poland's military to guard Ukraine's border with Belarus, force open Poothing's grain embargo and enforce international waterways. They are producing them at the same rate they are being used as of this date. Ukraine cant even handle 200k Russians. As another speaker pointed out, what is the point of France holding back 75% of them, as 1) France, unlike Ukraine, has the nuclear deterrent for national defence anyway and 2) by using them in Ukraine they would also be defending Europe, including France, in the long term?

Which means there are two possibilities 1. there’s a NATO agreement not to deliver western tanks, then it’s obviously a decision of a bunch of countries and not only a German decision 2. there’s no such informal agreement, then Spain can just go ahead and ask Germany for an authorization

What would be the point of supplying Ukraine with Leo 2s? They have no experienced crews, no experienced repair/maint crews, no spare parts, no ammo stocks. Just giving Ukraine a pile of Western equipment is of very little practical use. The man portable missiles that can be trained in a couple of days, fine, small arms, also fine, but even something as relatively simple as the various artillery systems they are receiving require weeks of training, and heavy equipment like tanks and planes will require months, plus the logistical buildup of parts, tools, and ammo to be actually useful. Polands T-72s and BMP-1s were far more useful, because Ukraine already operates T-72s and BMP-1s, and would only need training and extra spares for any extra equipment that the Pole had fitted (new sights etc)

If Ukraine is equipped with enough heavy weapons it will certainly tip the balance of the war. Ukraine soldiers are superior in skill and motivation to Russian soldiers, all they lack right now is the heavy weapons to counter Russian heavy weapons. Once Ukraine reaches close to parity with Russia with those it will begin to make large advances probably starting in the south at Kherson and through to Crimea. Then the Russian position in the Donbass becomes much less secure. Tell Russia that if it shoots at Western forces, they will be attacked all over Ukraine. Tell Belarus that it will be attacked if it enters Ukraine and doesn't send out Russian forces.

@@donsullivan6199 that is unlikely. As long as the intervention is on Ukraine territory, Russia does not use nukes. And it cannot afford opening another front by attacking a NATO country. It's a all bluff and bluster.

Neither the Ukrainian and Russian forces have shown real progress, the latter because of its incompetency, the former because the incompetency and indecisiveness of some NATO countries. The outcome could be quite different by now, if they have responded earlier. Even now, the ‘losing’ to Putin cannot be considered as ONLY Ukraine losing but the unity and credibility of NATO as well.

@Anonymous Bosch right? These people are delusional. And Russia did it out-manned 3:1 at the beginning, while attacking and enemy that had 8 yrs to build up solid defenses, with positions manned by battalions of fanatical far right, NATO trained troops that use human shields as a standard battle tactic.. "Hurrrr Durrr why is Russia going so slow?" They're too used to watching hours of night vision camera shots of Apache helicopters shredding goat herders with AK's

Russian artillery accurate up to 100meter radius of target (allegedly, what we've seen its up to 2 miles off target) Western artillery accurate up to 1meter radius of target. Good luck Russia, you will need a miracle lol.

@@kartikeyatiwari2502 the thing is what he’s saying is if putin wants to step foot on nato soil, see what happens, although he will probably be a big coward and send nukes instead of fighting a proper war, in which he would get annihilated. It’s a fact. Russia has embarrassed itself already, simply shown themselves to be pretty weak with less advanced weaponry. I think the west will be really confident now.

Yep exactly, a lot of people think Russia would win a Nuclear war too... thanks to all the nuclear propaganda from Russia. The fact is it only takes 2000 nukes to blow Russia of the face of the earth, NATO has 6000 nukes. Russia does not have enough to destroy NATO. So again, good luck Russia. lol.
