So it turns out they scrubbed the Artemis I launch this morning, so my assumption at the end that SLS is ahead is... premature. But does that change the equation? (I don't think so personally, scrubs happen all the time)

The bird pooping car correlation bit totally reminded me of a trip to Papua New Guinea in one of Josh Gates' shows where nobody parked under a tree, so he parked the rental there and exclaimed to the team, "What a perfect spot in the shade!" Locals laughed. Some time later in the show they return to the car, which was originally blue, now black and white from bird droppings, and a local, "..And that is why nobody parks there."

About the birds pooping on cars, I have been a mariner since 1990, ships not baseball, and one of the first places I went to was St. Lucia. I noticed that inside all the small fishing boats they were painted blue. I asked an old mariner why this was and he mentioned to me that birds don’t like the poop I’m blue. He pointed out a couple of boats that were not painted blue and he pointed out how much more bird poop were on them. It seemed logical at the time and I still have questions about it but thank you for your short segment on birds pooping on cars.

Galway is a city and county in the west of Ireland, famous for having a large number of Irish speakers, music pubs and visiting tourists. Galloway is a rural region in the southwest of Scotland with few big towns or tourist attractions. I've been there - and what it does have is an innovative Dark Skies Park, which other truly obscure out-of-the-way places could usefully copy. The Dark Skies Park is a large mainly forest and moorland area where extra planning rules and legal restrictions attempt to limit light pollution. This is to encourage astronomy and the development of astronomy tourism. Galloway and parts of the Highlands further north in Scotland are already among your best bets in western Europe if you want to see a natural night sky, as most of the more populated parts are heavily light polluted. The Dark Skies Park sensibly tries to built on this advantage to give the locals something to promote to attract visitors. Astro photography in the park kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4umqmCvZsyHhpo

Considering the problem with SLS is a stuck valve on one of the RS25s it's very likely they will have to roll SLS back to the VAB. I think they're hoping by detanking and bringing the temps down to ambient, then trying again they can get the valve to work. If they have to do a roll back we're looking at 1-2 months delay which will give starship time to fly.

Unless you have the percentage of cars that are red, blue, etc. that are in the "population" of cars then just counting bird poo on cars is insignificant. In other words, saying 18 percent of the poo fell on red cars means nothing unless you know what percentage of cars out there are red. Saying 14 percent of poo fell on blue cars doesn't matter unless you know what percentage of cars out there are blue, etc. etc.

Let me get this straight: The company that didn’t even exist when the Constellation program started, barely existed when it became Artemis, has come from behind to be the most popular & prolific launch provider in history, provides the only manned flight option in the United States, started developing the largest and most capable rocket in history after the SLS was already 5 years late, has flown actual hardware on sub-orbital flights, and is rapidly moving to send their massive rocket to orbit… that company… is behind. By a long way? I mean, technically sure. But I seriously doubt it will take them SLS levels of time to reach the same point.
@vcuheel1464
@vcuheel1464 2 жыл бұрын
@@thewiirocks Yes. I think they’re way behind. Switching to the mechanism of catching the booster and Starship shows that they found from their attempts to land Starship that it’s a lot harder than it was with Falcon. These are much larger, more massive rockets. Landing them and not causing major damage is not going to be as easy to do. And when they get to the moon, it becomes harder. The rocket will be approaching the moon faster than their tests in Texas have been, they won’t have an atmosphere to use to slow down, they won’t have a mechanism to catch the rocket, and they won’t be landing on a level, concrete landing strip. And this doesn’t even account for their need to do multiple refuels to make the mission work… something that’s never been done in space before. They have a LOT of steps between now and landing on the moon. It was probably a mistake for NASA to select SpaceX as their landing platform with Artemis.

@@vcuheel1464 Those are all very strange arguments. You seem to be under the impression that SpaceX is unaware of the basics of spaceflight and hasn’t simulated the heck out of the various conditions. Worse yet, you’re assuming that NASA has done a terrible job of due diligence, selecting a moon lander provider who doesn’t have the first clue how to land on the moon. Unfortunately, I have to apply Occam’s Razor here and find your arguments lacking, not SpaceX’s plans.

Something that's not mentioned enough for my liking: Space travel is... dangerous. Much as I admire the various projects to the moon and beyond there's the nagging memory if when the shuttle started - and NASA set a 2% failure expectation - losing an orbiter evert 50 launches (which tragically was accurate). It will happen again - and suddenly the race to the moon becomes much much harder to sell.

People dying, weirdly enough, shouldn't be as big as an issue as we make it out to be. We should do everything in our power to reduce it of course. but when it happens it happens. Thousands of people starve to death for less. millions have died in war for less. The military commanders will send the soldiers to die to protect a random piece of land. But 2% risk doing actually world-changing impactful things is too high? during the war wars they were suicide missions just to think one ship or take out one tiny Target of marginal strategic interest. but a Kamikaze mission to Mars, no shot?!

I'm not trying to say just because bad things happen we should do bad things. reducing suffering should always be our number one goal. and all those bad things that happened in the past and still happened are,well, bad. I just think from a utilitarian standpoint billions of dollars, essentially infinite value on a single human is a bit much. Especially if the person wants to consent to do things that are dangerous. we have terminally ill people on this planet and people who will probably die from things like cancer but are otherwise still fully capable of doing whatever they want in the meantime. essentially why can't we use people like this for scientifically advantageous purposes?

SpaceX has been very effective at hyping space exploration, but as every Elon Musk pet project to date is over-over-hyped. Most of the announcements regarding Starship have been retracted, postponed, reworked, contradicted. It's a mess. Hi Joe, an oft told story here in the UK as to why red cars get more speeding tickets was that the police officers were playing a game that they based on the game of snooker. So, ticket a red car, then another colour, and then back to a red one again, and so on until they couldn't carry on and each traffic car would compare scores when they got back to the police station.

I've got some anecdotal evidence for you: I lived in the same place for 9 years, and owned a dozen different cars of various colors during that time. My car was parked outside in the same spot every day, during the same times throughout the week. I wash my car every week on Sunday, and have done so for decades. So there are plenty of control measures inherent in this evidence. Three were red (one maroon, two bright red), three were black, two were blue, one was green, one was purple, one was silver, one was white. Of those dozen cars, one of them got 5-10 times as many bird droppings as all the others, to the point where I kept a roll of shop towels and a spray bottle next to my door because I'd have to clean at least one off the car every day. That was the only silver car I've ever owned, and I'll never buy one again (unless I'm parking it in a garage).

I had a similar experience with someone unrelated to my normal circles recognizing me. I teach tech courses on Udemy while also working for a major employer in central Florida. My employer hired someone that took one of my courses, which he asked me about when he saw me in the break room. It was sorta awkward since I try to keep my moonlighting activities low key while at work (I'm no longer there, so it isn't a big deal now). We eventually ended up working on the same project for about a year before we parted ways.

I am pretty sure that government departments have been told by NASA to find ways to delay SpaceX Starship (example EPA environmental impact assessment at Boca Chica). I also expect that the first test flights of Starship will fail on some places such as launch (blows up on the launch pad, engines fail and it falls back to earth and is destroyed using the flight termination system), getting to orbit might not happen because of avionics/guidance failure or just not have enough umph, and of course re-entry (burns up as tiles fail and/or the flaps get ripped off) and then the landings (misses the landing zone, the tower and capture chopsticks and completely destroys the landing area and towers). For each fail the government will require a 3 year investigation before they will ever consider allowing another test or crew certification. So either Startship will be cancelled and end up in a museum, it will only be certified to carry satellites or only a limited crew of 4 highly trained NASA astronauts. Short of cash Musk might sell the whole thing to Russia or China. Musk might buy a dormant volcano in the South China sea and launch from their.
