Could the Iron Giant Defend Hoth from the Empire? | Star Wars: Galactic Versus

Could the Iron Giant defend the Rebel base at Hoth from the full force of the Galactic Empire, including their fleet in orbit and their AT-AT forces on the ground?
The goal of the Empire will be to destroy the Rebel Alliance shield generator, as they did during the Battle of Hoth in the Empire Strikes Back. In this scenario, the giant replaces all Rebel forces, including the ion cannon, and must take on the Empire himself.
The Iron Giant is a 50 foot tall sentient machine from the 1950's... and outer space. He has a sweet normal version and a fully weaponized version which only appears when he goes berserk. Going against the lovable giant will be the Empire's Death Squadron and Blizzard Forces, including Thundering Herd, comprised of 9 All Terrain Attack Transports (AT-AT's), and smaller AT-ST's.

I feel like the issue of the Iron Giant's accuracy is due more to keeping the movie at least PG. An alien war machine vaporizing the US military would have been pretty hard for parents to explain to their kids, in turn, hard for the studio to explain to said pissed off parents.

For exampe just like Tlactl said nobody gets out the first tank and in the second tank we only see 2 soldiers get out, the problem is American tanks usually hold around 5 people: Gunner, Loader, Driver, Radio operator gunner, Commander. And it wouldnt make sense if only 2 people were in the tank, that would be impractical to use the tank, plus all the other tanks that get completely destroyed with their crew inside.

You touched upon something that you then overlooked completely: Range. The Iron Giant has considerable range with it's chest cannon, if not it's other weapons. The Empire's ground forces have nowhere NEAR the same range capabilities. Additionally you overlooked the Giant's agility in it's standard mode, being able to easily outrun and outflank the Imperial force... You also forget that it does not need to deploy its entire arsenal (it freaked out and produced one weapon when it saw Hogarth's spark gun). Finally it does not need to completely destroy the main threat of the AT-AT's, it can simply cripple a leg and render the thing inoperable. I feel like I could continue with this for a few more points but I'm far too tired to keep going.

The Iron Giant's abilities are far underlooked in this video. Blizzard Force is made up of Infantry, Cavalry, and the Thundering Herd, as you explained. The second the Empire touches down, possibly even before, given enough intelligence, the Iron Giant would be dispatched and immediately take on the Empire's troops. Human-sized ground troops are far too slow to make any sort of advancement on the Rebel base before the Iron Giant begins its defensive strike. Its left arm cannon seems to destroy things on a molecular level, completely disintegrating a tank in the span of a few seconds. The smaller walkers are around that size and will be easily dealt with at close range, which the Giant can close much quicker than the Empire. The Giant can fly, while the Thundering Herd is earthbound, for lack of a better phrase. The AT-AT walkers would be easily dealt with using the chest cannon. We never saw a direct hit with it, but if it works anything like the left arm cannon The Infantry would be left to fight a fifty-foot metal behemoth that can take .45-.50 calibre artillery rounds with no damage whatsoever, along with an entire cell of Rebel forces. Blaster rounds might be literal weaponized lazer bolts, but the Giant practically ate a detonating nuclear missile and lived to put itself back together. The bloody thing didn't have a visible scratch on its plating and blaster bolts barely get through Stormtrooper armour. The rapid-fire energy gun seems to fire bolts of equivalent power relative to blaster fire, though it has a much faster rate of fire. Given how the Empire's formations seem to be about as close together as the U.S. military's infantry in the Iron Giant movie. Given the Giant would have the adequate resolve to destroy the Empire, seeing as it allies itself with the Rebel forces, it would easily and swiftly dominate the Empire's Blizzard force and the shield generator would be safe. The star destroyer fleet would have to leave and restrategize.

honestly he did nothing to take in the readiness of the rebels the rebels knew where the Empire would land the rebels can also scout out like the Empire I'm 100% sure that even if the Empire divided it's troops and landed on different coordinates the giant would be able to pin point what group would pose the biggest threat and it intercept it before it even has a chance to land making short work of them from there on he could go around cleaning up any remaining forces the walkers would never pose a real threat they are way 2 slow ground troops on the other hand may have a chance of sneaking passed the giant to the generator id say with preparations on both sides giant wins 9 out of 10 times

I disagree with your conclusion on this one. The empire would have no reason to suspect that the iron giant was on Hoth and would have attacked the rebels as the did in the movie. The giant would have the element of surprise and combat initiative. Because the empire sent there ATATs together in a concentrated group expecting to overwhelm the rebel forces they would most likely be wiped out at the onset of the battle. The empires remaining ground forces would not be able to threaten the giant but might be able to scatter and attack the shield generator with satchel charges assuming there are no other rebel defenders. Personally I would give this battle to the giant 6 out of 10 if he is unsupported and 8 times out of 10 if there are rebel troops supporting him.

Definitely agree with this. The chest mounted cannon looks to be in the megaton range based on the blast size in the movie (detonated behind the curvature of the earth which at sea is around 14 miles away). That could have dealt with all 9 walkers in one hit. I think the real issue is the number of smaller walkers/vehicles and whether he's able to take them out in time. By this point the empire will likely cotton on to his power and split forces off, some to distract him and some to blow up the generator. Its the smaller units that will prove the bigger problem imo.

KevRob 1053 Actually, it's because the Stormtroopers on the death star were like a quiet desk job. The Stormtroopers on Hoth were of the 501st legion, Vader's personal army. Also, Vader wanted the rebels to escape the death star. So he could put a tracking device on the Falcon. So it makes sense that they couldn't hit them.

So a few things I see with this. That makes me think the giant would almost always win. 9.5/10 1. Nothing other than the at-at would have a chance at any real damage to the giant. Maybe everything else firing at once would be a problem. 2. The scene with the battle ship in Iron Giant shows him able to hit targets accurately from great distances(miles I would wager). 3. He is on home field, he would have sensor data coming in from the base inaddition to his own sensors. He would know who, where, when about everthing around him. 4. In the battle of Hoth the at-ats and their support was clumped fairly close together. Compared to the blast radius shown from the chest cannon. This I would say is the standard for at-at deployment. They need to stick together to protect each others weaknesses and add to their intimidation factor(we all know that is a big part of their tactics). This would put any troops in that formation as a one shot from his chest cannon from a great range. Here is how I the best laid plan working out for the empire. I will give the the knowledge that they are dealing with a very powerful and fast opponent. 3 teams 75% main force right up the middle, a small force of 2 at-at, some at-st and a few infantry and a sneak squad of 5ish troops trying to sneak in a bomb. The giant detects the 2 larger forces. He recognizes the main threat and one shots them with his chest from far out of range, all gone. The second force planed better and being smaller was able to find some cover on approach in canyons. The giant goes in for close quarter combat from the front. Takes out and atst and some troops but takes some hits from a atat. IG uses his speed to move to the back of the 2nd force and begins easily taking them out with the atats unable to turn and fire on the IG When he is almost finished an alarm goes off that the 3rd force is here and almost at the generator. The troops are now sprinting the last 100 yards to the generator as the IG gets to them 4 fall with shots from the arm and the 5th is at the door when...SPLAT! IG heads back to mop up anything left of the 2nd force. The only way for this to turn out differently is if a small force can sneak past IG and all the sensors and senturys for the rebels, I dont see that happening often. Just my humble opinion of how this would go.

That giant chest energy cannon's round misses the ships, goes beyond the curve of the earth (who knows how far) and generates a blast that fills a large portion of the sky. Without any hard data its hard to say for sure, but to me that would appear to have an energy on par with an explosion in the kiloton range. Lets just say that ATAT's have good enough energy shielding that such a blast would probably not defeat their armor without a direct or really close hit. The shockwave from that would almost certainly knock them over if the tow cables were enough to. Also, anything short of a heavy vehicle like the ATAT could probably be handled by the normal rebel troops that are already defending the base in the movie. If the Giant knocks out all of the Empire's heavy ranged weapons then it just becomes a matter of whether or not the rebels can hold the line against infantry and prevent them from planting explosive devices. Also, you overlook one other weapon at the giant's disposal, that being his own body. He's a big ass metal giant of similar size to the ATATs and he's clearly more stable on his feet, seeing as he took multiple rounds from 8" naval guns, which is a hell of a lot of momentum. He could use his own weight and momentum to knock the ATATs down. Once they are all on the ground and immobile, then he can simply penetrate their armor at his leisure.

I have to say I think you really underestimated the IG in this one. We saw in the movie that the weapon in his chest is not only hugely destructive but it has a range that far surpasses anything the empire has. Not only that but the blast radius is enormous and could easily encompass all the empire's forces. (at least the ones we see in the film) even if that gun is not hugely damaging (not very probable since the IG was going to attack a battleship with it) the empire would be under attack so long as they are within visual range. Considering how slow AT-ATs are they would not be able to make it within firing range before being hit with this weapon at least once.

Gotta disagree. Looking at the giants weapons and it's ability to fly I think it could easily keep the battle at its preferential range until it needed to get in close. The long barreled energy gun is probably meant for range but I may be wrong. However, The chest mounted energy Cannon went beyond the horizon, got there extremely fast, and still made a massive explosion plus it seemed to be made of a plasma meaning it's area of effect would be far stronger than a conventional nuke as a large part of nukes damage is the shockwave and heat. From the empires perspective they would deploy the At-Ats in close proximity to counter the glaring mobility weakness. And because of that I think the gang could wipe out all AT-ATs in one blast and if not it has the disintegration thingy cannon that even if it couldn't disintegrate the whole AT-AT it would easily disable it. You mentioned your hypothesis of his durability changes depending on the mode. At the end he was in his normal mode when he intercepted the nuke so its possible he could just tank a nuke in his military mode

I think what he meant was that when he is in "normal" mode, his armor is enclosed tightly around his body, which could be for covering weak spots to reduce incoming damage when not in combat (crashing into the planet, surprise attacks, etc.). Why else would he be designed to transform into "normal" mode, other than a trade-off between attack power and protection?

Now I've never watched the show the Iron giant was featured in but I doubt it can move as fast as a snow speeder. Especially since it is on the ground most of the time.

It shows where the target is located and if it is vulnerable enough to fire upon it. The driver would still have to move the AT-AT just enough for it to be able to aim and it would still have to fire its weapons. It would certainly aid the driver but he and the AT-AT itself would still have to do most of the work so my argument still stands. Plus even if it was a targeting computer that did all that it would just make the AT-AT'S more powerful and have much of a bigger chance at taking out The Iron Giant.

The Iron Giant would crush this battle. With no Hogarth to distract him or tell him killing is wrong he would simply let off 3 or 4 chest volleys, enough to cover the entire battlefield with a little overlap each, and reduce the entire Empire force to ashes. If more enemies arrive, rinse and repeat. With the Navy neutralised, there really isn't anything they can do to him unless they get close; his chest beam went multiple miles before it exploded.

I would think upon seeing the AT-ATs he would fire off his chest cannon and take out two to three (as it's radius is VERY large) after that. He probably would engage the rest with his more conventional weaponry, assuming he can't fire another chest round for some time, I would bump up his chances to a 50/50 shot, due to his rapid firing weapon would mow down infantry. I'm assuming his sensors would get enough information and programming would have him use his best weapon upon seeing 9 taller and well armed vehicles. I'd also assume that he'd wind up splitting the walkers into 2 groups, just due to the radius of his chest cannon. I'm guessing that both sides would have minimal knowledge of each other's power at the start of battle. I.E. the rebels kept the iron giant inside until the empire was on the ground and moving. And could give him some idea as to what he's facing. While the empire would have to fly off of what little they may have heard via spies, and/or recon droids that see him first. Which the giant might also destroy, giving some idea as to his power. All in all, 50/50 or 60/40 in the Giant's favor, just due, again, to the HUGE radius his chest cannon had. I mean, that thing went OVER the horizon, (3 miles away on sea level, which they weren't mind you, and even then was huge AF)

All the Iron Giant really would have to do is take out the walkers, which would have been easy. The ATAT's are slow and lumbering, and only have a small forward firing arc. He would just have to launch himself behind the walker line (using flight) and then he could easily decimate the entire walker group without any worry. He can also fly into SPACE and directly assault the ISD's by putting his fist through their bridge windows, which we've seen is highly effective against the Executor... but you kinda forgot about that.

I think you should do something weird, chose any ship, and both sides have the exact same ship. The catch is that the crews are different, such as Old Republic vs the Empire, or Rebels Vs even the Covenant. Star wars factions, of course will be able to use force users associated with the faction. (Idk how many times, a lot)

For the second option at least, it may go to the covenant as most weapons in star wars are partially or completely plasma based. Even slugthrowers have in most cases a cocoon of plasma around the shells. Because of the covenant familiarity with plasma based weapons, they will probably win. But a Star Destroyer in every other aspect outside of weaponry seem more like a UNSC ship, and they are built to be crewed by humans, so it could be a close fight with the UNSC being able to adjust to the controls and maintenance first, and the covenant adjusting to the weaponry first.

Just justifying my reason, the iron giant could not be taken down by amy energy based weapons as itll just scorch it and not do anything else to the iron also the iron giant has plasma based weapons, which most people say lightsabers are formed with, meaning it ill melt almost anything in its pathway and, the chest beam filled half the screen in the cutscene meaning the iron giant could disintergrate the at-ats in in instant as when they were deployed they were deployed in a close formation allowing the giant an easy way to kill all the ground forces. 400 mm ship cannons I think are just a little more powerful than heavy lazers. As well as the iron Giants foot boosters are really unstable so he didn't get damaged from those fighters he just lost his balance. The repeating cannon could merk troops at st all of those peace of cake. The left arm cannon could shoot at the heads of the at ats. Chest cannon is basically a nuke shooter and would vaperize a ton of the imperial forces and the shockwave and radiation would kill or disable most of the imperial force. Verdict iron Giant wins.

Sure, some 9mm, some 75mm, 120mm, those may tickle a little. Then he was hit by a 16 inch gun, and only that was able to damage him enough to get him to prioritize them as immediate need to strike first. For something only 50 feet tall armor like that is pretty impressive. Now, he gets hungry, and needs to eat metal. This implies a weakness as why else would he need to eat metal but to recycle into something right at hand to make repairs. He requires this constantly. However literally all he has to do is eat the scrap metal of the war machines of fallen enemies. So long as he can keep doing this he can keep putting himself back together without to many of his parts being beyond repair.

However this itself comes at one of the dumbest drawbacks in existence... they don't use medical technology on a larger scale for reasons born out of 'Honor' and how they view blood. However, the two greatest advantage they have over the Turians, is that they're a Military State (pretty much) rather than the galaxy's police. and the Sangheili aren't restricted by the Relay system. Turians have 37 in their entire fleet. The Sangheili have 14 in one Fleet. In the entire Navy at its height, they fielded tens of thousands.

One assimilation is all they need to gain the tactical advantage and everything they assimilate makes them more powerful Face it, they are essentially robo-tyrranids and could only really be bested by the tyrranids or just possibly the necrons (because of the C'tan)
