"I think about my father. He never reached the heights like me, but in a lot of ways he had it better. He had his people, today, what do we got?"
When The Sopranos first aired in 1999, it was an immediate success and quickly became the hottest show on television. This was rightfully so, as the 1990s were jammed with mafia related content, with Martin Scorsese's two blockbusters in Goodfellas and Casino, Robert De Niro's directorial debut in A Bronx Tale, and the real life mafia trial of Gambino boss John Gotti. So it makes sense why The Sopranos was such a hit with everyone. Ever since the series' ending in 2007, The Sopranos has now become more popular today than when it originally aired. This is due in part to The Sopranos and the main character in Tony Soprano being so relatable and relevant in todays world. As audiences watch Tony deal with panic attacks, depression, anxiety, all while trying to balance being a father at the same time. In society back then, The Sopranos and other television shows could get away with some of the racist or off coloured remarks that are in every nook and cranny in the show. But in today, not so much. As some of the scenes, jokes, storylines, and narratives have not aged well as time as gone on. But what if The Sopranos were to air today? How would it do? Would it be a bigger success to when the series initially aired thanks to streaming? This is a revisit of how The Sopranos would air today.

@@australian2 I guess you've missed the moral of the story, where greed, addiction, lust, pride took down the main characters of the series, then left everyone else behind to grieve in their passing. Jamal Ginsberg was the one that got away. Got away from the horror that unfolds in the end. So did Shaggy, Blanca, and Sveta. Being "woke" gave these characters the insight, to make a calculated decision to break away from the nightmare. They saw NO FUTURE, with the Soprano family.

One of the sopranos main achievements was literally challenging the preconceived notions of what televsion shows were about in this time period , e.g. a main male lead in therapy with severe mental health issues, an anti hero bordering on villain as the main lead, empathises with a gay character etc etc. Assuming the same personalities (e.g. writers and producers) are behind the show there is zero reason to suggest it would just conform to the social standards of the time . A lot of the best recent shows e.g. Better call saul,succession, game of thrones, arent "woke" in any meanginful way. Shows get "cancelled" when the writers and studios behind them lack balls. HBO and the sopranos team specifically dont strike me as a group of people that lack balls

Could The Sopranos Air Today? Definitely. All those story lines; racism, misogyny, greed, lust, addiction, morality, they are more relevant today than ever before. The series writers covered a wide range of human nature. Art, culture, religion, philosophy, psychiatry, science, politics, economics. Since time immemorial, crime has plagued societies around the world. We are fascinated and repulsed by it. We're all prostate with depression. So, we self-medicate.

It could air today imo, but they would probably race swap a few characters, or give a more prominent role to some of the black characters long term. Also, the scene where Tony and AJ pulled up to "the crackhouse" probably would be cut. They also probably wouldn't kill Vito solely for the fact of him being gay. Despite the fact that a lot of the characters' racism, sexism and homophobia was meant to mock and critique the characters themselves.

If it came out today it would almost certainly be on a streaming service rather than a terrestrial tv network. Interesting!. The Soprano's would be a hit no matter what era it came out. The themes and subject matters that it addressed are timeless. But the world is a different place than what it was in 1999 so it would have probably been done differently. In this post-truth society we are currently living in, I can see the writers taking on subject matters COVID, Trump and MAGA, Black Lives Matter, Abortion, etc. And the further deterioration of the Mafia. The quality would still be there though.

I think it definitely could air today, but otcourse there would be quite a bit of controversy about the casual racism, employee of the month, and Vito's death. People would be especially up in arms about the brutal assault of Melfi which served more as a spectacle than to advance the plot. The "regular" violence would probably be fine though I think, if you look at shows like The Boys and how that can air. Though theres ofcourse the issue of shows like that likely not existing or atleast being very different had the Sopranos not aired.
@sondheimravel
@sondheimravel Ай бұрын
ok. “Employee of the Month” was not a “spectacle”, it was an important moment of character development for Melfi in regards to the allure of Tony’s power. if you think that episode was for purely exploitative purposes then you simply don’t understand the thematic core of what occurred
@hylobateslar4151

@sondheimravel

@@hylobateslar4151 the whole point was that Melfi was stronger than the temptation to have her attacker whacked. the whole point was that Melfi had a moment of weakness and considered employing Tony in his evils to get something she wanted. Tony is constantly trying to corrupt Melfi in whatever shape or form he can because ultimately he wants to control everyone he meets. you can articulate how the attack scene was graphic without implying that the writers were trying to make a “spectacle” out of a horrific event.

Anything could air today. People say the Office couldn't even air today. If networks didnt knuckle under to a handful of people crying on social media then maybe we could get great and realistic writing again. TV shows are entertainment not instruction manuals on how people in society should act and behave in real life. Anyone with half a brain knows that. But people on the far left worry about it. So we end up with all of these lame, poorly written characters and storylines that need to reinforce the woke lefts utopian vision of what they think the world is supposed to be.
