In the early 90s Derrick Coleman was a beast! Was way ahead of his time, had everything you'd want from a power forward and more. One of the first real stretch 4s in the NBA that had the chance to be the best ever at his position. He still had a solid career, but didn't quite hit the mark of what was expected of him in many eyes. To me, DC is a legend, but what happened to make him miss the mark for most? Stunted Growth.

@@stuntedgrowth hey sir love your video. at the beginning of it you said Derrick Coleman could have went anywhere but he went to Syracuse. I saw Derrick Coleman play at Detroit Northern , and back then Syracuse was always in the Detroit area Detroit PSL basketball back in those days was at least top five in the country we were sending so many players to D1 schools Todd Bergen was another player from Pershing that went to Syracuse Missouri was always in Detroit if you ever get a chance really take a look at Detroit PSL basketball between 1980 and 1995 and I use those years because they were perhaps the last Great era before AAU basketball took over.

@@stuntedgrowth many times coaches try to make players, play in style that is fitting to the style that said coach played in. Which leads to an outdated style of play. I had a coach in high school who was running plays from the previous coach, who won a couple state titles. But it was 8yrs after. He didn't even change the names of the plays. So as soon as our PG would call out a play our opponents knew what was coming. Said coach only got a title because the seniors after my class, wouldn't listen to him. They just played like they knew how.

The death of Drazen Petrovic in the summer of 1993 was a HUGE stunt bro. The Nets had the former Bad Boys Pistons coach Chuck Daly, Had DC and Petro, who both were All-NBA 3RD TEAM in the 92-93 season and lost to a "battle tested" Cavaliers team in a best of 5 1st round series that went 5 games, and you still had Kenny Anderson who was an ALL-STAR PG the next season in 93-94 along with DC being All-NBA again. And if he were alive in 93-94, Draz would've been ALL-NBA again and an All-Star starter in my opinion, especially with MJ being "retired". The Nets were building something and the death of Petrovic changed the direction of not only DC's career but the entire Nets franchise and that's an Evel Knievel sized stunt that was glossed over

Such a great video! DC was so talented. I am a Sixers fan and saw him play a lot for us during his two stints, and it was well documented that he didn't work particularly hard and was pretty apathetic. That said, he still put up numbers for us, which shows how truly talented he was. He would've fit in well today - had good size, could handle and shoot it. But, he definitely would've had to work harder than he did when he played. Had he had that deep desire to be great, he really could've been a hall of famer.

So after Coleman's 2nd season with New Jersey, a season where he kind of took a step backwards mostly because he was injured, there was talk of Coleman getting traded to Denver for Laphonso Ellis, Bryant Stith and a 1st round pick in 93 and 95. I would have loved to see Coleman play next to a center like Mutombo, a player who knew his role was to protect the rim and rebound and let other players do their thing on offense. As it stood the 6-8 Ellis had a few good seasons in that role next to Mutombo but put Coleman next to him while theyre both in their prime and Coleman goes off. Denver always needed that one player they could count on for 20ppg+ and Coleman would become that guy. Coleman's big issue, especially earlier in his career was defenses collapsing on him whenever he got the ball within the paint. In NJ he REALLY had to work for all of his points because the Nets had guys like Yinka Dare and Dwayne Schintzius playing next to him. They cant do that in Denver because even when they collapse on him he can drop it off to Dikembe. On top of that, Mutombo was a year or two older than Coleman and far more wiser. He could have been that mentor that Coleman needed earlier in his career.

Honest and truthful: thank you for a great summary of this man's life and career. That was a tough sight: a lefty who could shoot the eyes out of the hoop. (I always thought lefties were the harder guys to cover because I reflexively tried to stop a righty with my left arm and hand on a shot.) I remember Derrick as a monster forward with the Nets (and later, Detroit), but as you said, he had his demons to battle. (I clearly remember a quote from D. about his attitude on the court and people calling him out for it: "Whoop-dee-damn-do.") Thankful that he's turned his life into a source of motivation and support for others.

DC represents what Detroit was at that time; flash, intimidation and reputation. As a native Detroiter, it’s easy to see how the basketball culture of the late 80’s and early 90’s laid that foundation. If you simply look at all of our native Detroit talent during that time span you see a plethora of greatness. With that said, they were ALL lazy to a point. From DC, Doug Smith, Victor Alexander, C-Webb, to Maurice Taylor and Robert Traylor, all lazy. I’m not saying that these talents were wasted, what I’m saying is IF they would have WORKED really hard, man o man!

NBA players are humans who have human struggles. DC had a nice career in spite of whatever issues he had. Good to learn he's still growing as a person. Clearly, he's a success! Nice video ..

You really missed the impact of the City of Detroit on DC's Career. DC is Detroit through and through and the his affiliations definitely impacted his career. You also didn't touch on his mentorship with the Great Dave Bing. That's is why he went to Syracuse. DC is synomonous with the city of Detroit. Particularly the "North End."

DC was one of my favorite players that I loved and hated (not literally) at the same time. Being a Hoyas fan, he gave us hell, but I definitely respected his game.

He had a crazy skillset in college. I remember him destroying players in the tournament to the point where he was visibly laughing at how easy it was to score on players. He would body the center and dunk on him, then come back the next time down and shoot the 3 like it was nothing. He always had too much fun off of the court though.

Man, I loved Derrick Coleman as a kid (& still do to this day) He was this big huge guy & yet, he was able to shoot the 3 ball...Looking at it now, he was probably a pain in the ass for other bigs to guard...I can't believe he only made one All-Star team

Don't comment to often but thank you for sharing... DC was far and away the most talented PF in the league. Just didn't put in that work, minus his natural talent if he actually put in that work he could've been #1 PF EVER!!! I was a youngen but I remember, and he's pretty much the only NBA star that actually still had a crib and businesses in the D. 💯 #salute

Great one again SG... I thought he and Kenny Anderson could’ve led the Nets for years, instead they became the poster boys for the whole “spoiled millionaire” perception... much like the “Jail-Blazers” of the late 90’s -early 00’s; bad attitudes over shadowed their talent and ultimately derailed what should’ve been years of continued success... I agree, should’ve been HOF and the best ever PF... thanks for this one... keep up the great work

Detroit will always love Derrick. He has done more for the city then most players from the city and I would guess his unselfishness was a big part of his bankruptcy. I know relatives of his that tell me he's a completely different person now and how he's really trying to give back to Detroit. I also know people who in HS where completely embarrassed by him and his dominating skills. Nothing but love D!
