Hi Kim, I found your comments on the use of language as something that I have been conscious of for some time. I'm ex Australian Army and I find myself avoiding the use of terms such as shooting whenever I take my camera out for a photo walk. And I cringe whenever I hear portrait photographers use terms such as head shots for corporate style photos. For many people these terms are innocent but for some of us they can inadvertently convey a different meaning. Good luck with the book and I hope it is a success for you.

You can get yourself bogged down with words it doesn’t really really matter. Just go out and enjoy your hobby as the main thing. 👍

Hi Kim, this is something I have long had a problem with - finding the write word(s) to express how I perceive my photography and how it makes me feel; from the moment when I press the shutter button, to when edit an image. I think, sometimes, we have lost or forgotten many words in our language; I have noticed this over many decades, almost like a form of erosion, weathering, wothering. Since I retired in December 2022 at the age of 69 (and a bit), I have rediscovered my love of literature and it has been a treasure to delve into written works that I would never have considered before. Little by little some clarity and contrast is returning. The shadows are receiving more light and too much brightness is being reduced to bring out detail that was there but not readily seen. I have found that my pace in phtotography has slowed, this may be an age thing, or it just might be that my mind is saying "hold on a bit, take your time, think about what you are seeing or think that you are seeing". Rediscovering words I had forgotten or discovering words I didn't know existed, is adding a new dimension to my photography. It is experiencing the moment, living the moment and being able to express it in your mind with greater freedom of imagination. I am so looking forward to receiving Kim Grant's new book.

Excellent presentation, thank you. I've long been aware that I *make* pictures, I don't *take* them. I start with an effort to communicate how much I love the landscape in the image, but the raw file is only the beginning as I use a variety of LR and PS techniques to get to my final picture. I also study the French language, so I've become more aware of the words even that I use in English. I told my French teacher that I make photos (using the French verb "to make") and she corrected me that it's "to take." I understood what she means, as that's how most people think of photos, but I know what I do: I make pictures. Your book will help and affirm a lot of us, thank you.

I have always liked the word create. I think of photography as art and artists create. I had never thought about the negative connotations of words like shoot. That gives me much food for thought. I really enjoyed you taking us through your reasoning in creating the book. I now often take my journal with me on my photographic walks and so I totally agree about words.

Wow! This video really touched me! I deeply believe in the principles of neurolinguistic programming. I had never took time to think at the words used in photography! Very interesting! I just ordered the book! Your konwledge will be transmitted to Quebec, Canada. Thank you for this different approach to photography!

Very interesting video and way of thinking Kim. I teach English as a second language and I believe that every word has an individual "feeling" when we speak it, read it, write it, or think it. I also think that I may have a slightly different feeling for a word than another person, you for example, may have. For example, some people may feel that giant is larger than huge, and other people might feel the opposite. So I can really appreciate your thoughts you have shared here.

Interesting video Kim....yes words are important but depending on the language spoken it can have different meaning....I saw a sign 'intruders will be shot on sight' which referred to photography - confusing terminology.... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊

The shipping cost to Canada is a bug deterent. I often buy used books from UK sellers and they obviously have access to different affordable rates. Perhaps you should explore. An ebook version would circumvent this obstacle. Possible? Gary

Thanks, Gary. Once the pre-sale is over and the books have been sent, I will be looking into selling future copies as print on demand through a company and getting an e-book version made. 😊
