Could Xenoblade X2 be Nintendo's MMO?

There are several MMO’s that offer solo play where you can play the game mostly on your own whilst still being able to see all the other players and be able to interact with them at any point you wish. Obviously, if you’re playing an MMO you’d want to play with others but nowadays there are many players who want to play the game but are too reluctant to dive in with others for any sort of reason. Plus, Xenoblade X is a single player game, making the sequel strictly multiplayer wouldn’t go to well with a lot of playerbase.

Look I know people would like this but an MMO is a HUGE commitment. If monotlithsoft were to be the developers, then we wouldn't be getting any other games from them while they worked on it. It would need constant support and expansions and there is NO guarantee it would be successful enough to continue to support especially since it would be locked to Nintendo hardware. Its too much of a risk. The only way I could see this happening would be if they gave it to a third party, but then that would be a whole other issue

Yeah can't say I agree with Luxin on this one. A Nintendo console exclusive MMO based on a niche IP would be dead on arrival. Not worth the time, effort, or money it would take to develop and keep running.

I think Xenoblade X2 MMO could work as a MMO-lite like first Guild Wars. Guild Wars 1 still works to this day because they made sure that it doesn’t demand much server resources. You can see and meet other people only in the hub areas (towns etc.) and outside these areas you can only see your party members. Now when you tie this to Nintendo Switch Online+ or something like that, Nintendo would make a lot of money.

Online Co-op Xenoblade sounds cool but I REALLY do not want an ongoing MMO. I really like single finished titles with sequels, not ongoing online games.

I'm with you on that but I think a hybrid would be fine. So like XCX just with a bit more online. For example, maybe you will meet here and there other players who play the game at the same time, but only with very limited interactions. So that the game is still great even though you play it without being online.

I have pretty high doubts of a full on MMO for a xenoblade x2 as there is just a monstrous amount of basically live service maintenance elements that I think would be a bit much for even monolith soft to jump straight into but honestly I could see a basically monster hunter type of gameplay online implemented and think it would work pretty great as well

The lands, everything is just too lackluster for me. If there were a Xeno like MMO though? Oh heck yes I'd love that. Also just idk, it feels isolating when trying to play FF14. To be able to play a game where to you don't need to play with others, but can, would be great too.

I wouldn't want an MMO because it forces story/timeline stagnation. Warcraft had 3 games but once they made WoW it killed off the possibility of future Warcraft titles because of the actively updated MMO. I don't see how an X MMO would be able to allow for continued episodic updates to the overarching story unless its primarily irrelevant to the unfolding story. That said, a new xeno game that allows for a more robust largescale remote co-op could be amazing

It would be really cool if they went along a similar route to PSO2: New Genesis where it's an open, Xenoblade-like environment but with players all running around completing tasks together. You could be struggling with a Tyrant and have someone rush in to save you, or have someone pull enemies away while you search for an item in a base. Of course, you could play offline on your own if you want to, as well. It'd be a really unique take on Xenoblade while making it in-line with X's focus on BLADE and having different units working together!!

1:48 - 2:18 actually there is another game that's like it. it's called "phantasy star online 2: new genesis" made by the one & only, sega. while i would say it's an online action rpg & it being a weaker replica of xenoblade x, it still holds its ground with the open-world, combat, and jrpg elements. heck, even the game is centered around sci-fi, like xenoblade x. i even joke often how pso2:ngs is xenoblade x2, given how similar the the story & lore are, especially small details from certain cutscenes in both games

While when I originally played Xenoblade X almost 10 years ago I also wanted there to be a sequel that's an MMO, by now I don't really think I'd want that anymore. Nintendo would most likely shut it down only a few years after the death of the switch 2, and I also don't believe nintendo would be willing/capable of having multiple meaningful expansions for the game. Additionally if I want to play an MMO I can just play FF14 and that scratches a very similar itch for me as Xenoblade X once did. So having a part of a story focused series I enjoy being trapped behind a game that would at some time become unplayable and basically lost media is no longer that appealing to me.

It’s crazy, when I first played this on WiiU my mind immediately went to the idea that this game shoulda been a full blown MMO. The gameplay felt like it had the bones of one but they decided to keep the game a mostly single player game for the sake of ease. I wouldnt want a xenoblade mmo. I love X but never touched any multiplayer whatsoever. Xenoblade to me is a personal experience. when a new entry comes out its straight up a religious ritual. If they put out a big mmo with endgame content and constant updates, I would never keep up. It would ruin a big part of why I love the series tbh. Of course I want X2 but I want it to be the same game format, no mmo pls.

The thing about an X2 I'm most curious/concerned about is the world we'll explore, since exploration is X's big strength. How will they make Mira interesting to explore again? Are they going to TOTK it, which a lot of people didn't like? Or are they gonna have you move to new continents elsewhere on the planet? Or maybe you leave Mira in XDE?

i think new continents is the most likely, since we saw at the end of X that there are a whole lot more than what we explored so far. Like if i remember right, the part that we knew, wasnt even a quarter of the landmass. Also wasnt it said that Mira has some strange property that makes it extremely difficult to leave it? I think that was also mentioned in those missions with that time tavelling guy. So yeah other planets seems pretty unlikely. Then again it has been years since i played it, so i might be misremembering.

I would say design the game for a single player experience as a priority and multiplayer second. Possibly give players the option to opt into multiplayer and it throws you in the main game but with a bunch of other players to interact with/combat with in the world of xenoblade X

most modern nintendo games have decent online actually. from what I heard Mario Party Jamboree continues this trend. I actually have to say something about the "online" info in this video (sorry Luxin, I love your videos), 99% of Nintendo online multiplayer modes are P2P. which means one switch owner hosts the game and the others join him. In case of Mario Kart or Splatoon the game just ends when this person just shuts down the system. Nintendos online playtest though had dedicated servers, because things need to be saved there permanently. This also means better connection. And I want to emphasize very heavily on the fully naive believe that Nintendos online playtest was just a "prototype" to test this online system. I work in game development for abouer 12 or 13 years, I shipped a lot of titles, smaller and bigger and I tell you this is NOT a prototyp! There is already so much polish in this, Nintendo would never build something like this just to throw it away. I think you have no understanding how expansive something like this is already. This is their new IP and everyone who thinks this is just made to test a feature for a new Xenoblade game is A) very naive (or has very little understanding how games are made) and B) spreads dangerous fake news, since more and more people will believe in it (people believe anything when it's repeated over and over again).

I'm so hyped for X to make it's come back as it was my first Xenoblade game & yes i still have the Wii U version with the installed content the problem was my first run was well poor & not optimized at all since i was new to that sort of game not to mention the servers are now down so the online portion of the game is dead at the moment. I can't wait to see the new story as that cliffhanger has been in limbo for almost 10 years now & since the Xenoblade franchise is now even more popular than it was when X first came out i hope to have more fun on the online section as X is still the only Xenoblade game with online missions.

1:41 The opening discussion on how X getting recanonized into the main series means that X would stop happening is one of the many reasons I'm so negative towards connecting theories... aside from the fact that so many from them are really boring from a storytelling perspective. They don't answer the game's mysteries in a satisfying way, and they don't really open up many interesting possibilities despite closing off so many more interesting ones. That, and the fact that a merge means X is more likely to get shafted gameplay and story-wise, makes me wonder why people even want them to be connected. The only other successful mmo that has a similar visual style is the Phantasy Star ones, as far I know anyway. So a xenoblade x mmo with lots of singleplayer content, that can be also played with other people similar to 14, seems like a cool idea. Just being on the switch 2 will give it nice boost as an mmo made for it. Are there any mmos on the switch right now? I guess you can count warframe. Sorry thoughts are a bit scattered right now.

havent watched the whole video yet, just judging of the NSO Segment ive skipped to and the several comments im reading in regards to it. i watched one of the with most certainty highest "performing" (if you might even call it that) players of the Playtest play for almost the entirety of their playtime, so ive got a good grasp of the infrastructure, the game itself and whatnot. Its not connected to Xenoblade or any other IP but is its own in every regard. It is already very fleshed out and goes insanely deep, to levels even most players during the playtest could not unearth properly. Its also huge, arguably bigger than nintendo has ever done to date, including X, if we are counting the very segmented world (by loading times) as one. In Open World Standards X should still be leading. It is going to be its own IP, its going to be a mix between Roblox and what Lego Fortnite tried to be and i sure as f* can guarantee you its going to be fun. There are no official stats of course but the exploration the players actually achieved (which was huge after someone shared a special very fast building technique) still captured like only 1% or less of the entire possible game world. Its going to be linked with something, and i can safely assume its going to be somewhat connected to a new online service/an improved version of NSO. Which also would correlate with X because of the former Miiverse integration. X2 being an MMO has close to nothing to do with the Playtest except the actual stability of the servers which was clearly proven. Still i wouldnt count it out from happenings just a little bit of info.

True there is nothing quite like XCX out there , the only thing you can play if you want something like XCX is XCX itself. What you said makes a lot of sense. IIRC Monolith Soft said in a recent statement that they established a new Developer Team for their new Inhouse Engine that is more focused on Open World Games. It didnt say anything about Online , but that dosnt mean that the focus in development couldnt shift towards it. I think it all depends on how well XCXDE will sell. It and a future X series have great potential.

I want Xenogears in the Switch ecosystem and eventually a remake of that game. I think it would mostly in the Xenoblade Chronicles X style - except, I'd like them to pull a Witcher 3 and have multiple cities the size of New LA (Bledavik, Nortune, Etrenank). Give it the story depth of Xenogears (which I found considerably more satisfying than XC1-3 combined), with the vast freedom and open world storytelling of Xenoblade Chronicles X - while Xenogears is largely linear, there is so much opportunity for a more open world style since that story can be told in layers instead of a linear stream. It's not a novel concept, that's how Witcher 3's story works.

While I will absolutely play any Xeno games that come out in the future, I don't really care for MMOs. I don't have any friends who are into games like Xenoblade and $60+ is way too much money to talk a friend into just trying the game. So, if I wanted to play with other people, it would probably have to be random people online. I don't think a remastered xenoblade x means there will be an X2 as the additional content could simply be a way to wrap the game story up what little story there was. All it does is have all xenoblade games available to play. I'm still on the fence if they will ever remake the xenosaga games. They said XC3 was the final game in that series so I think whatever is next will be new and unconnected to the previous games. Which could mean they could use ideas from previous games such as mechs etc , be kinda nice to have a fresh story.

Monolith Soft is really focused on showing up their old workplace, Squaresoft / SquareEnix. Xenoblade X online games in general have already made a better impression than Final Fantasy online games by not trying to integrate with the numbered series (and generally handling online play excellently in all Monolith Soft games).

A MMO, or any Online RPG for that matter, would be a huge deal to keep people in the Nintendo Online Memebership. Nintendo probably wants to release XCX now, because XCX needs the huge installbase of the Switch, but also to hook up people to the online membership. And with a potential XCX2, that focus more on online, then maybe even more so. I don't think we will get a MMO out of XCX2, because MMOs are a lil bit too big. However, let's say, XCX2 is more like Monster Hunter World / Rise. Games that keep on getting story updates, side quests, or events. Basically, even if there are not many games coming out, since you keep getting updated with XCX2, you would likely keep your membership. XCX2 could be Nintendos "MHW", getting updates for like 2 or 3 years, with maybe a big DLC expansion (like Iceborne / Sunbreak).

A little off-topic, but I was just thinking that a Dynasty Warriors Style Xenoblade game wont happen, because either would be a weird and pointless fanfic that would include all of the games or it would be a game specific like Xenoblade X or 3, but since 3 story is complete and X is gonna get completed in DE, I think a Xenoblade Warriors wouldnt make sense at all. What you guys think about this?

I don’t think a Xenoblade Warriors being a dumb non canon fanfic would really stop anyone from making it. I’m 50/50 on a Xenoblade Warriors being made, but it is strange that it’s been so much time since the last Nintendo Warriors game.

I don't really like the Idea of an MMO. I very much support the idea of an Monster Hunter eque title, where you can tackle the content in COOP and have a more mission based structure, but less actiony and more RPGish

Personally I’m still rather doubtful of us getting a proper XCX2 until we see all of the new content that X:DE will have. If the game answers most of the BIG questions and doesn’t ask at least a few equally massive ones that don’t go answered in the game… then I’m going to assume that this is more to have a ‘finalized’ X in order to use for the ongoing Xenoblade series, rather than a jumping off point for further sequels. Though part of that is still the fact I’m not sold on Gears or Saga being as important to Blade as you personally think Luxin, I still hold that they might just be using concepts and ideas from those games rather than intended to pull them in wholecloth. Still, I could be wrong of course, but I’m going to be a little more skeptical about whether this is a new rebirth for the spinoff to actually FINISH the game, or if it’s something more until we have more info.

Honestly i feel like some XCX fans wants this game to be an standalone so bad 🙄 and just because Nintendo said it's an standalone it could be just marketing for people to not worry about buying the other games, so they can start with XCX if they want, but don't be surprised if Monolith Soft ties in XCX with the numbered series, like it's a Xenoblade Chronicles after all, they can end up making a connection between them.

Didn't they show off drop-in drop-out multilayer gameplay in the original showcases? Four players being able to play through all of Mira and it's story together? I know it was early design, but I was a little disappointed when the final game came out, and it was mission based.

Nah Xenosaga isn't coming back, I'm almost positive on that. Xenoblade is a spiritual successor(or maybe Spiritual Remake is the better wording) to both Saga and Gears, combining both of the things Takahashi loved from both series', we have zero reason to think it's coming back, if anything X getting remastered and nothing from Bandai on the rights of Saga being transferred means Saga is sadly but surely dead in the water. And if to give even a little bit of copium, if Saga is still getting a comeback, it's probably more then 5 years out at the very least(and that's assuming Bandai actually let's MonolithSoft use the rights), and Gears would be the first thing to get a remake. I don't see Saga making a comeback without Gears first being remade.

Why would Xenogears come back first? It's with Square Enix and at this point it makes no sense for it to return. FR heavily referenced Xenosaga and there is a better relation with Bandai if they want to go with canonizing Saga. Personally i think that it's more likely that the next games will have more Xenosaga Elements and KOS MOS might become a major character on it, but not the same KOS-MOS, more like a new one and the next MC being an Uzuki.

@renren47618 because Xenoblade is heavily based on Xenogears, and even then it's still just as likely to get a remaster as Saga is. As for the references in Future Redeemed, I really do think both the radio logo and the name drop are just that, references. What makes the X parts more interesting is the fact that they aren't just name drops or a logo(Which Takahashi has already stated he likes reusing names and logos), they have full on events detailed that lead into X's opening, not just a reference.

xenosaga has a much higher likely chance of coming back than xenogears. idk about you, but square enix has not made an effort to truly bring back xenogears or letting monolith soft use its ip for their xenoblade games, unlike namco with xenosaga. also, nintendo has a healthy relationship with namco which is also why i think xenosaga would be more likely to come back

You have no idea how bad of an idea the concept of turning xenoblade into an MMO would be. Everything single MMOs have shitty predatory microtransactions every single corner of the way. X used some elements from MMOs, but it didn't matter because it was a single player game with no microtransaction whatsoever. Had XB been a square enix IP you bet your ass XB2 would have DLC crystal cores up the throat. Keep xenoblade out of this. It needs to continue being an immersive role playing game.
