Fans of The Touhou Project have debated whether or not one could reasonably date an actual youkai if given the chance. In this video, I look at history, cultural advancements, and the very nature of humanity to determine the answer. Maybe even touch on some Touhou Lore and Worldbuilding?

Thing is, the youkai of Touhou are shaped a lot by what humans believe about them. Kogasa for example started as just a sentient umbrella that sucked at jumpscares, but later also became a skilled blacksmith, probably because villagers mistook her for a similar-looking youkai with such skills. So if people believe youkai can be romanced, it's gonna be possible. Might be risky depending on who you're interested in, but if monster girls are already your thing I'm sure you'll find a way to make it work, you brave soul.

There's only 1 thing wrong with this video. The fact that the "magical wife" trope is referred to as Japanese when in reality it is literally everywhere, and I mean EVERYWHERE in mythology and folklore. Right down to tales of animals leaving their "coat" and turning into beautiful women that inevitably get involved with a man who inevitably loses them as theh get back into their coat, turn back into an animal and leave them.

I think the biggest obstacle is smell. Some youkak are hairy, live in water, or flat out made from #2 in the toilet. How they would smell would determine if they activate neurons or not and from there if people would go the extra mile

Here's your friendly reminder that, canonically, Rinnousuke is half human, and half youkai. Which means that his parents did the whole human-youkai romance thing before it was cool! So it is canon to Touhou that not only are humans and Youkai able to get together, but it's happened before. ... Heck, Youmu is half human, and half _ghost!_ (Which is odd since, IIRC, her grandfather was _also_ half-phantom, so either that's not a literal half, or their family line has had a lot of humans and ghosts shacking up.)

Dating/living with youkai would gurantee one thing - complete chaos and non stop trouble/shenenigans. Like being teleported to Chad because Yukari thought it would be funny, getting to lucky and being hunted by gangs/casinos/Reimu because Mamizou heard you complain " you don't do your job as a tanuki", being on other Gods hitlist for engaging with their rival God ( also goes for rival religions) because it would be like like killing the dog of your enemy ect ... You are living with the beings that constantly try to break their boredom in their own way. If you can roll with it and make it the norm, all the more power to you. Just remember what you signed up for. Definetly wouldn't be boring, that's for sure.

​@@haiperbus Youmu claims that the Konpaku clan is specifically a lineage of half-phantoms. While it may still be possible that a human and a phantom procreated to create a half-phantom, it's also possible that being a half-phantom is a specific trait passed on and is considered a dominant trait. I mean, Youmu comes from the half-phantom clan of the Konpaku, so at least one of her parents has to be a half-phantom in the first place. Either there's actually many clans of half-phantoms for Youki to pair with or Youmu's not actually exactly "half and half". Either those or Youmu just doesn't know how her clan works.

It's been confirmed in mythology that Medusa uses that to her advantage, which is why she was such a problem in the first place. The irony is that in some versions of the tale, her head is used by Athena for her shield, Athena being the very reason why Medusa's hair is composed of snakes because Medusa's beauty induced extreme levels of jealousy in Athena. Remember, Medusa was already a beautiful Gorgon woman in a trio of sisters. The curse Athena sets on her only affects her hair and her face is still viewed as "divine" in the eyes of human men.

In Japanese myths, there are situations where a guy ended up with a fox lady or a snow woman and had kids with them. Those kids then had some supernatural stuff about them. Hell, everyone's famous onmyoji Abe no Seimei was said to not be entirely human and that his mother was the fox spirit Kuzunoha. In fact, thanks to him being born from a yokai mother, he could order around weak oni when he was five.

5:16 This does reminds me of her interactions on a touhou +18 dating game. The more you interact and the more she gets fond of you. The more her character develops. She even gets conflicted if she should continue what she should do as an Amanojaku at you or just simply accepts her feelings for you. Yeah the game definitely went with the "I can fix her" but it was enjoyable(and very difficult because it takes way longer compared to other characters).

I think I know what 18+ game your talking about. I really like that game characterizations (most of them) in general. I like the interactions you can have with the grassroots network. The the dialogue with some characters when having convos. Also the forbidden love trope can be appealing after being with one character for a long time, and actually going through their route. See now the spicier next territory to discuss is how two youkais of different species would procreate. Half-youkai exists but it's mostly been half-humans, so could there be two halves of different youkai in one person? Now what if two people that are half-youkai² got together? 4 youkai lineages with 1/4 of each? Maybe some youkai traits are genetically dominant and some are recessive? Imagine the Punnett Squares we could make with this! Youmu is from the Konpaku lineage of half-phantoms so at least one of her parents must be a half-phantom; are both her parents half-phantoms or is Youmu genetically not actually exactly half-phantom?

I think the next logical step here is to have an in depth analysis over which of the Touhou youkai you would have the best shot at for dating. Maybe even a tier list of "most likely" to "least likely to date an average human", based on the characters' personalities and their species' folklore? 😏 Anyways, another banger video. Good video! Nice job sneaking the culture in there. Hyakki Yagyou isn't just referenced in Suika's title and spell cards; it's mentioned in the Japanese Goblin meme song also. The prevailing translation turns "hyakki yagyou" into "pandemonium", which IS a common metaphor, but given the context, the term is almost certainly being used in a literal sense. The song is actually stuffed to the brim with culture, and most of it flew over people's heads.

As for the actual breeding, that's where things get complicated. For an ambiguous example, vampires in fiction are a common debate on whether they can reproduce with humans the old fashioned way or they consider the people they infect their offspring. Usually the former due to the sheer amount of romance novels and popular half vampires. One case that is a definite "can't" are the crow tengu, given they lay eggs. Based on this I'm guessing a youkai's reproductive system is based on their original form.

I don't think laying eggs is enough to disprove their breeding capabilities. We all know that harpies are basically birds, even moreso than tengu, and they can reproduce with humans perfectly well - in fact, they're more often than not their prime mates. I think stuff does get increasingly more difficult to justify the farther they get from not just being human or animal, but being alive in the common sense of the word. How do you even argue tsukumogami, considering they're just the manifestation of the soul of an item?
