Something I love about Naruto’s power system is that, theoretically, anyone can learn to do anything. It’s all just different forms of chakra manipulation, so if you have enough chakra and know-how, you can most likely pull it off. Even Kamui can be replicated with a combination of fuinjutsu and space-time ninjutsu(though, to be fair, fuinjutsu can do pretty much anything).

@@StriderWolf incorrect. It was stated in the Land Of Waves Arc that bloodlines can be replicated by studying the corpse of a ninja who possesses one, which is one of the reasons that hunter Ninja burn the bodies of missing nin they kill. Tailed Beasts, however, while it’s true that not just anybody can create them, replicating their chakra and abilities is theoretically doable, if you manage to get your hands on even a little. For example, the Gold and Silver brothers started generating their own Kurama Chakra after he ate them and they kept themselves alive by eating his flesh, absorbing his chakra by doing so.

I fully agree with your video. When the power system is simple, and has hard rules, it feels intuitive. When you break those rules as well, it feels like a big deal. Logia types in one piece were seen as being op since you would as the question "how can you deal with them". They were overpowered. So when you brought haki into it, it felt like a big deal. You can now deal with logia types using haki which can negate their elements. Plus since haki itself has more softer rules, you can get away with bending the rules a bit, or adding onto it whilst remaining consistent. This is also why the fight between enel and luffy was a big deal since enel was seen as a super op character. Someone who was destroying the whole strawhat crew. So luffy countering him felt extremely intuitive because he was made out of rubber. It was basically a very well done deus ex machina. It allowed you to close the gap between enel and luffy, without compromising enel's strength. You didn't need to make enel weaker, or make luffy stronger. Or create some muddy situation where this occurs. It just felt right. I personally do prefer simple systems over complex ones. Since if you just say that you have some "magic force" instilled in you, it pretty much gives you the ability to get away with anything. You don't necessary have any rules you follow. You can do anything because your "magic force" makes it so. But if you have this "magic force" and you have rules put into them, it feels better too.

The main issue with simpler power systems is they're especially vulnerable to power-creep. When you don't have many mechanics going on the choice is either to introduce new ones to expand your narrative options with horizontal progression or you can increase the numbers (so to speak) to create the sensation of progression by growing linearly. This is partly why the latter arcs of Shounen manga can be the most underwhelming in any given series, they've exhausted the earlier creative potential of their power system and are just making everything bigger-er-er to compensate.

I think the real distinction here is, the simpler a power system is while doing what it needs to for the story, the better. Stuff like Stands and Nen and jujutsu work because the rules are always there, and they're simple. Stands just say "they have an ability, and possibly a punch ghost". Nen says "you have aura, and you can make pacts to trade anything for anything else. go wild." Jujutsu says the same, but with a different energy and inborn abilities to fit the... actually, honestly, JJK's setting is probably less dark than HxH, if only because HxH was probably that way to be all 'watch humans take something completely neutral and consistently turn it into evil'. Mistborn is another great example of a system that lays down a simple, easy to understand basis for all of its three (!) power systems, and sticks to them. The other side of the scale, the bad ones, fairy tail and black clover. I hate these power systems. The core of them, in both cases, is "they have magic, they absorb it from the air and store it in their body, they can expend it to cast spells, they get new spells by xyz". Some things, like black clover's mana zone, are good and fine, they're a natural extension of the core. Then the authors start grafting bits on to explain plot contrivances. Oops, they made their villain immune to all magic, better make it all magic except this sort! And also this sort, because this guy doesn't have that other sort! Oh, and this one too. Suddenly Black Clover has like five different types of magic, of which one actually has a tangible difference (true magic making real lightning instead of lightning-y magic), the rest are just handwavey same thing bigger explosion. Adding complexity is to be avoided wherever possible, it must be worth it, there must be a point to it. Else it's just bloat. Also, distinction between power and power system, obviously the abilities in Jojo's and HxH are sometimes convoluted, but that's a whole different thing. I do think the principle also applies there, though, Jojo's worst stands are the most complicated ones.

I like black clover power system and how it's tied to character development most of the time and i i think u have misconception their only 3 types of magic in black clover , normal magic, true magic and ultimate magic Normal magic is just magic everyone uses or magic that comes from your own magic supply. True magic u are using nature mana to power your magic instead of your own magic supply, it's similar to how naruto absorbs nature energy to enter sage mode and use senjutsu, that's true magic basically uses nature mana to power your spells it's called true magic bc they are taking mana from nature Ultimate magic is just magic but with a higher output, it's similar to gyo from hxh where they can raise there nen output temporarily for advantage similarly mages in black clover they raise the level of magic they normally use , for a particular spell Stuff like spirit magic and devil/forbidden magic are not necessarily types of magic, they are just magic unique to different races , think of it like dragonball where they have god ki , demon ki and evil ki , think of it like naruto where u have tailed beast chakra and six paths chakra , they have different names but they still do the same thing they are just more powerful similarly how god ki is usually more potent than regular ki and how tailed beast chakra is more potent than normal chakra, Also they don't absorb magic from their surroundings, ppl in black clover subconsciously turn their life energy into magic, stuff like zetten is just consciously using your life energy to make more magical energy to boost what u already have for a brief burst of power it's similar to how goku can launch attack that is greater than his own power level by using the kamehameha encae u dont the Kamehameha multiples the user power level by 2 for brief moment If u don't understand i can explain more if u want

I honestly never understood the idea of calling stuff like Devil Fruits and Quirks a power system. Its like saying being a mutant or Meta Human or falling into vat of chemicals in Marvel and DC is a power system. In order to be a called a system, a power system should be more than just a set of abilities that all share a name with very little tying them together. Like Chakra and Ki are power systems which have an infinite number of possibilities that anyone with either energies can use to create a variety of abilities but its all ties back to a very basic source. Someone with Ki can do anything someone else with Ki can do but there also has plenty of freedom so they can create their own techniques. Chakra has more restrictions and rules and functions, but there's still enough room to where one person could theoretically do what another person does while also having the freedom to create their own techniques. In the case of DFs there's no underlying thing that ties them together beyond, eat a fruit, get a power lose the ability to swim. And in the case of Quirks its just, be born with a quirk that may or may not have some kind of physical drawback or handicap. Someone who eats one fruit or is born with one quirk can't do the same things that someone with a completely different DF power or quirk can do. A Quake Quake person can't do stuff a Dog Dog person can do and vice versa. Someone with Pop-Off can't do what someone with Explosion can do. There's no real system at play, just people with a differing abilities, some more similar than others. Sure, quirks and DF can be awakened or improved and are split into types, but you're hard limited to what you can do with that ability. Haki is very power system because anyone with access to a specific kind of Haki can do the same thing with enough effort. You may need to be born with Conqueror's Haki, but one person with Conqueror's Haki can do the same things another can.

I like simple because I don't derive entertainment from the power system alone. The power system is like 10% (if that) of my enjoyment of One Piece/Dragon Ball/Naruto for example, what I truly care about are the emotional themes, characters, animation spectacle and writing. When power systems get overly complex they automatically take up more time and that time is taken from where I get enjoyment. When they stay simple they don't take up much time and it also doesn't matter that much and you can just sit back and enjoy. Now I will say there are shows/manga where the power system is the draw for me, an example would be Jojo. There the arcs literally are all about the power of the villain and the mystery behind them and overcoming. But whenever a character in Jujutsu Kaisen or Bleach explains his/her powers my eyes gloss over. I used to care a little more about power systems but now I see them more as lore, I just realized I can't really have an emotional connection to either so I can't get excited about it.

Kishimoto made the power systems in Naruto way too bloated. Everything can be solved with chakra because chakra covers every base which means that in order to be strong you just need a lot of chakra and jutsu to burn that chakra up and destroy shit. There’s no reason for a shinobi to fight like a shinobi when the alternative is summoning spirit bombs and killing god tier threats. I think Kishimoto wanted a big grand clusterfuck of match ups for the sake of pure spectacle without actually thinking of the many ways his choices spit in the face of the original limitations and consequences of chakra.

I don't get why people act like Naruto becoming the way it did in Shippuden was such a shock to people or felt out of left field. In Part 1 during the Valley of the End fight between Naruto and Sauske, it's told to us that the Valley itself was created by the fight between Hashirama and Madara. Part 1 establishes right there that the strongest shinobi in the verse are capable of reshaping entire landscapes. The only reason we didn't see more crazy shit early on in Konoha crush is because the Edo Kages were nerfed and Hiruzen was fighting Orochimaru in a barrier meant to contain the fight as to avoid more collateral damage to the village.

I personally think that Ki leans to be too simple. especially in the latter half of the series. Ki leaves no room for any interesting utility abilities to be useful in relevant fights. Let's look at Hit as an example that ability is useful and unique but Jiren broke out of it simply by being so much stronger than hit. A way that the z fighters could have remained relevant is by allowing them to have certain utility abilities that allow them to help in big fights but the last time I can really think of something like this happening is in the cell saga with tien tri beaming cell into the ground to delay him. That's a great example of a character who isn't on the level of the big fighters but found one spot where he could still help with utility rather than raw power. But there really hasn't been too much of that since.
@bafenada11415 ай бұрын
I think YuYu Hakusho's Spirit/Demon Energy feels like a better version of Dragon Balls Ki. It leaves more room for tactics and use of unique abilities, although the series ran into a similar problem of power escalation later on

I don’t think it’s “too simple” at all, just that people expect it to be something it never was in the first place. Especially from people that aren’t long time fans and just hopped on the bandwagon when super came out and now have these random demands to forcibly change the power system into just another one from a different anime because that’s deemed “better”. If you’re only going to use a single example from dbs and not dragon ball as a whole which you originally claimed, that’s not an actual problem and you just your own preference for what you think ki should be and not liking how a fight ended.
@haydenmcqueen25035 ай бұрын
@@LegendXD00 It is my opinion which is why the comment started with "I personally think" It is simply my taste that throughout all of dragon ball the power system of ki is just a little too simple for my personal liking. If you like it that's great! I just wish that Ki allowed for more utility which would allow people who aren't Goku/Vegeta/Gohan to participate in fights against the bigger enemies. Which is why I brought up tien in the cell saga. He was no where near the main cast in terms of power but he manage to find a spot where his specific technique was able to help out not by doing damage to cell but instead by holding cell down. I don't mind simple power systems but when it becomes too much of "That's a cool technique you've got there it's a shame I'm stronger than you so it's completely useless" (Hit vs ssbkk/Jiren) I just personally like it far less.
@LegendXD005 ай бұрын
@@haydenmcqueen2503 It “being your opinion” doesn’t make it immune to criticism bud. Hiding behind that thinking it’s some scared text that can never be challenged is your own issue and is an annoying take people keep using to deflect from criticism. You’re also not doing much to address my actual points in favor of just repeating yourself even after I already tackled those same overused and frankly overrated claims people love to toss around to “improve dragon ball” when it’s just them trying to force the show into what they want it to he or into a different anime’s power system altogether. Again, you claimed ki as a whole is “too simple” because the show doesn’t go the way you want it to.
@haydenmcqueen25035 ай бұрын
@@LegendXD00 I never said I want them to rewrite the DB to "improve Dragon Ball" Dragon Ball is what it is. Both for good and for bad. There are some hax abilities that aren't negated by simply being stronger than your opponent. there are some that are. We don't know if Ginyu's Bodyswap works on stronger opponents or not. Same with Guldo's Time stop. We have no clue if Devilman could do shit with his devilmite beam. Solar Flare does seem to work against stronger opponents but there are very few examples as it's rarely used. Destructo disc is a strange one. Krillin used it against Cell Max to cut his wing. (In the movie he cut his cheek) In the Cell Saga, Krillin hits Cell in the neck with a destructo disk only for it to do literally nothing and then Cell later threw destructo discs at Gohan only for gohan to catch them and then throw them back at him. We've been over TIme Skip. We don't know if Dabura's spit would do much though since it's Magic and not KI. Future Trunks did deflect it with his hands so I'm not sure. Buu's candy beam did turn Vegito to candy but Vegito was able to resist it by keeping his power and consciousness and continued to manhandle buu so I guess it kinda worked? They just used a ki barrier to block lavender's poison. Mafuba does work against stronger opponents but there's a limit on how much stronger, it also drains your life force in return. Roshi said that he not only couldn't seal Zamasu but it would also kill him to try. So I think Mafuba is a pretty good example of a utility technique that works even on stronger opponents. However, Mafuba has many weaknesses which lead it being ultimately useless as a technique which further shows that utility abilities are rather lacking in DB imo. 1. There is a limit to how much stronger your opponent can be to you Roshi couldn't seal Zamasu for example. 2. It can easily just be deflected. 3. It can easily be redirected to hit the wrong target. 4. You have to have a container ready nearby. 5. The container can easily be broken/moved during the technique rendering it completely useless. 6. You can straight up hit your opponent but miss the container which means that if you use a small container which is ideal you have a much higher chance of missing the container. So there are some examples of utility movies that do still work and there are many examples where they're easily rendered completely ineffective. Which is simply my personal main problem with the series. If that doesn't bother you and you love Dragon Ball's power system as is that's also perfectly valid. It's simply a personal gripe I have as an individual. That is all.

Personally I think that jjk's power system is absolutely atrocious. Mostly because the supposed depth is in the explanation, but not actually in the story, and that complexity destroyed the pacing and stakes of the plot and fights. The specific jujutsu that you referenced was one of the worst offenders, where the whole thing was about gambling, except he never misses his jackpot. So aaaall the complexity and risk that we wasted a week reading was just nothing, since he is just nigh immortal on an endless loop. Complexity can't come at the cost of intuition either. It should be that by understanding the system and you can predict how fights might go and see interesting ways for characters to use their powers. JJK has none of that. Every ounce of complexity is added as a retroactive justification for what looks to the reader like a complete ass-pull, there's no predictive element. It needs these endless long-winded discussions that completely derail the action because with out them the reader just loses all suspension of disbelief, says "well that was bullshit" and puts the manga down. That is not a well implemented system, objectively.

Using the words simple and complex is quite vague and probably a bad idea. You should have just used the terms "soft magic system" and "hard magic system". There is a reason why these terms are preferred and it's because magic systems in fantasy can't be classified as just "simple" or "complex". No nead to retread ground and make up new terms. Worth noting, that a hard system can also be simple or complex. I just wanted to point out how weird the omission of those terms were given how they perfectly explain some aspects of the video.
@JKSmith-qs2ii2 ай бұрын
I think your comment is somewhat ironic in a funny way. Everyone knows the terms simple and complex, he made his case for those terms but then you come in and bring in these "complicated" versions of the same words namely "soft magic system" and "hard magic system". I have never heard of those and I love that you say no need to retread ground and make up new terms when the two you mentioned are literally made up.
@baggelissonic2 ай бұрын
@@JKSmith-qs2ii all terms in existence are made up. There is no a single word in the dictionary that is not made up. Soft and hard magic habe been established as terms for over a century. The video is in fact retreading ground which is considered common knowledge in the literary world for a century and thus doesn't provide a meaningful insight to either of them. You could say "oh, it's just explaining the terms in his own ways". I guess, that's valid, but since he already misses 100 years of discussion on the topic, his explenations are very roundabout and not very refined. I do think it's very interesting that someone made an independent discovery of those rules, but the value of this video is greatly diminished, as it's both a bad introduction to those fantasy concepts and also provides little to none of his additional insight. If this video was restructured as an introduction on soft vs hard magic systems (which admittedly not everyone know about), it would have been a much better steuctured video, he could also research the topic better and his viewers would be able to attach the contents of the video to real life terms and let them communicate their ideas better but also be able to independently describe it. You seem to think that I believe he shouldn't have to explain these terms. I highly disagree with that, those terms require explenation and quite the lengthy one if you are adressing an audience of so many people. I have seen much much longer videos trying to describe the nuance difference between those 2 concepts.
@JKSmith-qs2ii2 ай бұрын
@@baggelissonic As much as they are described and established in literature they remain niche and for specific contexts. There's nothing niche about the words simple and complex. Everyone picks them up just like that and everybody knows what he is talking about. Many don't care to delve deep into "power systems" like that. I'm sure it's true there are longer (longer does not equal better) more in depth explanations I was just pointing out there is something ironic about complicating the words simple and complex. It's actually perfect you said "all terms in existence are made up" because it just shows the nature of over-complicating. You knew exactly what I meant. If you want to reach more people you keep it simple. Everyone says "the microwave heats my food" and a small amount of people in specific contexts say: "the microwave utilizes non-ionizing electromagnetic radiation, inducing dielectric heating. This vibrates polar molecules, primarily water, causing dipolar rotation and increasing kinetic energy, manifesting as thermal energy". I'm not saying there is no value in the latter, most people just check out and disconnect from the message you're trying to convey. In Shounen when these power systems become overly complicated, they can take away from the core of the story-particularly the emotional or philosophical struggle between the characters. I personally am unsure of fantasy books, which as you describe probably had either a "soft" or "hard" magic system, that struck a chord with me because of those systems. If I zoom out it was always about things outside of that. This is getting a bit long but I am not saying you are wrong and that there is no value to getting nitpicky, I found the comment itself so fittingly ironic due to the video discussing keeping it "simple".
@baggelissonic2 ай бұрын
@@JKSmith-qs2ii It's not overcomplicating. He already spends a very long amount of time in the video explaining what simple and complex mean in that context, so in reality, those terms mean nothing until he explains what he actually means. Not mentioning the terms seems like a no-brainer even if you want to expand on them. The reason he didn't mention them is quite simple, he doesn't know that much about this literary concepts amd he is trying to retread ground through his own analysis. Once again, there is nothing wrong with not knowing everything and it's good he is using his critical thinking which is commendable. However, a lot of mental effort is spent on his part trying to define this concept and also trying to convey it. His lack of knowledge of the subject, means he is stuck trying to understand the fundamentals, preventing him from offering nuanced commentary on the subject.
