Countdown Card Trick (1 of 3: Performing the trick)

!! SPOILER ALERT !! Intially there were 9 cards on the table to pick from. Then the choosen card was placed on top the rest of the 8 cards. So, remember our card is 9th from the bottom. He then places the rest of the shuffled deck **on top** of those 9 cards. So, how many cards on top? 52 - 9 = 43 To rephrase, now our card which was 9th from the bottom is now 44th from the top. To make the trick successful he has to somehow draw 44 cards from the top. Here 44 is the magic number. In the next part he keeps drawing a card and counting down from 10 untill the face value of the card matches the count. In the first case it directly matched (King = 10). So how many cards were drawn? 1. In the second case it matched with 8. So how many cards were drawn? 3. Can you spot a pattern? The number of cards drawn each time will be 11 - value at which the count matched. Previously it was 11 - 10 = 1 and now it is 11 - 8 = 3. He is doing it 4 times and let's assume the count at which the card matched in each case was w, x, y, z. Then the number of cards already drawn were: = (11 - w) + (11 - x) + (11 - y) + (11 - z) = 44 - (w+x+y+z) Finally he adds up the values i.e (w+x+y+z) and draws that many cards. So total how many cards were drawn? = 44 - (w+x+y+z) + (w+x+y+z) = 44 (There you go, we got our magic number) Since in total he has drawn 44 cards from top, the 44th card is our picked card.
