Tbf it might be because 561 is a Carmichael number, which means it's fairly 'well known' (relatively speaking) in some fields, so if a good mathematician was going to recognise the factorisation of some integer, that's potentially a good candidate!

Do the maths yourself, and hopefully you'll realise you can make 24 in two different ways [4*6=24 and (5+7)*2=24], then it's a quick step to 24*24=576 - which also clearly equals 24² ... but 24² was arrived at without actually squaring anying, because it was just a clue to solving it by a different route. I deliberately didn't spell it out because I felt Countdown fans would have the smarts to figure it out for themselves, and never thought I'd need to explain it in crayon. FYI. The fact that Richard broke the rules by squaring & cubing gave me licence to do the same as a nod to his 'violation' ... aka, it's a joke.
