Is it better to analyze by panels or author choice

You have to make those choices. Of course, you should look at a comic holistically and think about the entire piece and how it is composed. You also need to zero in and look at specific panels. While you are in a panel, you should talk about many author choices there. Hope that makes sense. There are many ways to explore any given text. Not one way.
