I know Kriegers suicidal tendencies are a bit of a meme now in the 40k community but this short shows the difference in mentality of Krieg compared to the average guardsmen. Kriegers aren’t suicidal because they want to die in penitence, more so they are willing to sacrifice themselves in place of more valuable assets or goals. Take this short, with the Cadians we see the Marine taking point at the front of the unit he’s with acting as their shield. Kriegers on the other hand understand that an Astartes is far more valuable than them and so when they move into the trenches we see them infront of the Marine, almost acting as shields for him to take the first hit. Again when the marine is down they charge into the Berzerker knowing full well they’re going to die but their death will mean a greater asset is kept to fight on. There’s actually a good book I read a few years ago called Dead Men Walking, its about Necrons waking up on an imperial hive world as a few Krieg regiments are stationed there on “leave” after a campaign. You never get direct POV from the Kriegers but in one scene a hive civilian is watching a platoon of Krieg grenadiers fighting Necron flayed ones, and its noted that as the Necrons closed in the Kriegers charged into melee with the flayed ones to give time and space for their men armed with meltas to keep picking off the Necrons. Also just wanted to say I found your channel through your last video and I really enjoy your content. Definitely some of the best breakdowns of the shorts I’ve watched.

@@misanthropicservitorofmars2116 I recall that book. Genuinely scared the hell out of me when the full horror of the Necrons are on displaced and how they destroy the entire planet, but also in the way the Death Korps are so completely inhuman in their behavior and how they dehumanize the population for more martial servitude. Absolutely love & recommend the book, because it's one of the few books where the the 'good guys' lose and truly show the full horror of what both sides are capable of. I mean leaving millions behind and leave them with the knowledge they will either die from being harvested by the necrons, die from starvation, disease or if they are (un)lucky enough to live that long, from exerminatus fleet that is on it's way to the planet, that might take years to come in the first place? You'd rather take a bullet to the head for a quick death than to be in be stuck on a planet and perish to a slow death.
@KanuckStreams
@KanuckStreams 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Kriegers do not go for any suicidal plan that comes their way. If a plan that doesn't risk killing their men shows a better chance of success, they will do that. If a plan shows a high chance of success, but almost guaranteed casualties, they will do that one. To a Krieger, it is not about dying for the Emperor, it is dying EFFECTIVELY for the Emperor. It's all about that K/D. XD

Fun fact the average Krieger is in their early teens when they first see deployment (around 13/14 years old) which is another one of the reasons they wear masks to conceal their age, Veterans/grenadiers are typically in their late to mid teens so they are essentially vat grown child soldiers (that being kriegs dirty little secret to keep pumping out their only export... manpower, the technology is banned by the mechanicus but it has been allowed to slide under notice due to the effectiveness of Krieg regiments) we see this in dead man walking when the regimental commisar orders a krieg grenadier to remove his mask and uniform so they could blend in with the civilian populace and the commissar is surprised as to how young he is. Hell, one of the Cadians charged a Black Legionnaire without hesitation. Hard to tell, but it really feels like the Cadians and Dark Angels could have beaten the heretics back if the Chaos Space Marines hadn't shown up. Technically there was one even more recent than that. Seen that Netflix movie 12 Strong? It was inspired by a mission in 2001 during the invasion of Afghanistan wherein a group of Americans were sent along with 600 Northern Alliance men on horseback to navigate rough terrain and identify Taliban positions for bombardment. On October 23rd, one of their airstrikes was off target and the Taliban were alerted to their presence, it was at this time that the Americans and Northern Alliance General decided to charge the Taliban position on their horses. Somehow it worked, and it remains the only recorded case of a cavalry charge to ever take place successfully in the 21st century.

That's not a pure cavalry charge since was operated with direct support of armored units. The last charge operated by only cavalry units was the one carried by the Regio Esercito's battalion named Savoia Cavalleria (i.e. Savoia's cavalry) at something called Isbuschenskij (sadly I've butchered that name) when Italian riders and Ukrainian Kazakhs enlisted in the Savoia Cavalleria charged soviet emplacements during Operation Barbarossa in 2.WK.

Every World Eater became a Berzerker, but not every Berzerker was a World Eater. The Iron Warriors had large numbers of them as well, they were well known for going a little crazy when they finally cracked a seiged target open. All it takes to be a berzerker is to have your brain rewired with something akin to the Butcher's Nails (or suffer a similar effect from some kind of Chaos curse, like the Crimson Slaughter), and while the World Eaters were the best at that, lots of other warbands do it. Also "admire" the Krieg might be a strong word. Most other regiments respect their dedication and single mindedness, while also thinking they're absolutely pants on head crazy. lol

About your comment on Kriegs not talking during most videos, if you look back at AbsolutelyNothings video you will see that the only time we hear a kriegsman talk is in a secure environment. The only reason they were talking was because it was the commanding officer who was trying to figure out where their allies were as well as coming up with a strategy to complete their orders. The rest of the video we see that the kriegsmen are in combat and are not talking. In all videos of Kriegsmen that I have seen they have only been in combat. The South Vietnamese welcomed the Koreans just like they welcomed the other nations fighting for their freedom, and South Koreans felt much sympathy to the South Vietnamese, because they too had their nations split North/South with the Communists holding the North, and the full power of their people diminished by being unable to focus on industry due to constant threat of war... and the North being backed by China. They sympathized with their own situation in 1950 when they desperately needed militaries from other nations (UN in the case of Korean War) to fend them off when Korea had literally 0 tanks in their arsenal and had to fighting off North Korea fielding tons of Stalin's T34s. And being the helper this time, eagerly hated the commies who would butcher the innocents (see: 6000 civilians raped and killed in the Hue Massacre, by NV and Vietcong) and also eagerly went on missions to distribute supplies to the local populace, it was thought being the only Asian ally helped approach the South Vietnamese. But nobody was allowed to invade North Vietnam, precisely because America was worried the war would escalate by China participating if the Allies pushed up northward in an attempt to eliminate the communists once and for all... just like what happened in the Korean War of 1950. (Much of the fighting was both with North Vietnamese invading from North and Vietcong insurgents creeping into the South via a 3rd country called Laos, which acted as a route to side step the heavily defended North-South border... kind of like Germany side-stepping the French-German border's Maginot defense line in WW2, by walking through Belgium instead) (China aiding the Vietnamese communists took a change in 1979 when China invaded Vietnam which unified in 1976. Because Vietnam was having a war with the Chinese puppet regime of the Khmer Rouge who were ruling Cambodia and responsible for the Killing Fields. The Sino-Vietnam War had a bizarre occurrence of American weapons left there for the South Vietnamese government before America pulled out in 1974)

You are somewhat mistaken with the Kriegers, they are not all vat grown. Nothing I have learned about them would suggest that. The vitae wombs that they were commissioned after putting in a request is more likely used as a supplemental tool for them. Because remember immediately after winning their war and rejoining the imperium, despite the horrendous conditions of their world. Didn't offer one, not two or five, hell not even ten Regiments. They offered twenty fully trained, and equiped Regiments that requested the harshest battlefronts that can be offered. Considering this and the sparse supplies they would have been working with through their entire history. The fact Krieg was able to produce entire armies once a unheard of level of supplies was being pumped into the planet should offer little surprise if our history has shown anything. Thus the vitae wombs were and still likely are used to assist with not only the production of their army, but possibly their general population. Allowing them to recover far faster then they otherwise would. Finally the Quartermaster didn't kill you off if you couldn't return to the line yourself necessarily. They would do so if the costs to save you and bring you back to service would be far too high. Because if the resources to save you could save two others. It wasn't worth the cost to do so. This being far less of an issue though once rejoining the imperium, since they had more resources and tools to work with. However it could still be practiced if the circumstances would demand this action.
@francescovolpe1285

The main role of the Quartermaster is NOT the role of field medic. His primary role is to recover the equipment. If a Kriegsman is seriously wounded and/or cannot at least crawl back to the lines on his own, he becomes a liability and a burden, so is mandate of the Quartemaster to bless him with the "Emperor's Peace", a rapid and honourable field execution. Than the Quartemaster can retrieve any viable equipment and re-distribute as per needs. Krieg men are replaceable easier than their equipments. So yes, the Quartemaster field triage is exactly that: U walk? Good. U don't? May the Emperor bless your soul, but I need those trousers. And those boots. :)
@redstar248
@redstar248 3 жыл бұрын
@@francescovolpe1285 The main thing is however is if the soldier can be recovered and brought back to service they would. Because a soldier that can return to fighting or some other useful purpose is one less that will need to be shipped in. Like a Lasgun or power pack, the question remains is if the resources required would be worth it or not. If it would cost too many resources to restore a Lasgun, then salvage what you can that can be reused then get rid of what can't. This applies to the individual soldier as well, the difference is that the resource problem isn't as pressing for them as it used to be before hand.

@@redstar248 the point is exactly that: is it worth the effort? For Krieg’s mentality most of the times the answer is “nope”. They are not like other Imperial Guard regiments (I refuse the new “Astra Militarum shit), where the life of a Guardsman actually could mean something. For Kriegsmen, life is a tool exactly as lasgun powerpack, they are grim and somewhat callous in this, because their history made them that way. That’s why the Quartemaster is not a real medic, is more a battlefield scavenger and eventually a medic. 😅
@redstar248
@redstar248 3 жыл бұрын
@@francescovolpe1285 True to an extent, but not completely. The Quartermaster rarely operates alone, they always have assistance to help with the recovery. I do not know what you are specifically referencing, but you make them seem quite wasteful. While there would be a limit to how much they would pour into recovering a linemen, that limit when they are well supplied is far higher then they historically could before now. If they lost a leg they could give them a prosthetic then toss them back to the line. They die, then you can take the prosthetic and reuse it after a few adjustments. This would also depend on how quickly they can get replacements in Krieg. If this one can brought back to the field faster then one can be shipped in. Then you would do so. They are callous but they do not waste as much as others would if it can be helped. The key factors are time and resources, and the recovery of a life is identical to the equipment it is covered in in this regard.

This left the Lights with no support, so they took a gun-line, routed the Russian light cavalry, then had to turn around, force their way back through the same cavalry and run the gauntlet of fire again. That was a bad day for them. The heavies had earlier performed their own heroics, cutting their way through the Russian cavalry in an uphill charge. Ok, not so much a charge as a forceful trot, but they drove off their opponents all the same.

Everyone remembers the Charge of the Light Brigade yet it was the Heavy Brigade that had destroyed 12 times their number of Ukrainian and Russian Cossacks and it only needed the Light Brigade to finish off the job. Their commander had rightly kept his Brigade out of line of sight of the artillery but it meant he didn’t understand what was happening on the plains below and the rivalry between the messenger and commander meant a big mistake was made. They attacked dug in artillery, “Guns to the left and guns to the right of them, etc” but stupidly didn’t bring spikes for the guns so once captured they had to leave them intact so the crews remanned them to shoot at them again.

Light Cavalry was mistakenly ordered into a frontal charge on Russian artillery, as immortalised in the poem, 'Charge of the Light Brigade'. I really like this animation, but I kind of wish the Chaos marines had finished off their targets before the cavalry charge. My favorite tidbit of Krieger lore has to do with the Commissariat. Commissars are typically a means to boost morale and make sure the unit is moving in the right direction AKA towards danger. NOT FOR KRIEGERS! Instead of pushing guardsmen to the frontline, Krieg commissars try and stop Kriegsmen from getting themselves killed. Kriegers have such little regard for their own life, that the men and women who would execute them for running the wrong direction are instead trying to keep them alive.

12:00 There was no "battle of Crimea". It's the Crimean war (1853-1856). The Charge of the Light Brigade during the Battle of Balaclava was a famous debacle, but it was made against a Russian line equipped almost entirely with Napoleonic weapons*, so it was not a sign of changing times. The blunder was one of communications and coordination. The brigade received confusing instructions and attacked a more heavily defended target than they were supposed to. The guns they were charging into were not more modern than what you would have found on the Napoleonic battlefield, but that they were charging headlong into any guns at all was an enormous blunder (even Napoleonic artillery can fire cannister shot, which will tear enormous gashes into just about any formation, and since horses are such big targets even solid shot is a greater threat to them than it would normally be). The last regular use of mounted horse cavalry was WW1 (cavalry tactics of WW1 are actually pretty interesting (the British had a slightly different concept than the continental armies), but there isn't time for that now). I went to some effort to look up the last mass cavalry charge and it turns out to be as late as WW2, although some smaller actions may have occurred as late as the 1970's in Rhodesia. In 1942 on August 23rd 600 Italian cavalrymen charged Soviet positions on the Don river. They suffered predictably heavy casualties, but succeeded in closing the distance and drove the Soviets off while tossing grenades and slashing with their sabers. There were a handful of other charges earlier in the war as well, including one made by the Americans in January of that same year in the Philippines against the Japanese, actually driving them off temporarily, but the rest were not as successful. Of course what would really bring an end to horse cavalry wasn't modern rifles or machineguns or artillery, but the development of armored vehicles which were fast enough and reliable enough to replace horses. *I can't actually find whether the Russian guns were smoothbores or rifled. I can guess that they were smoothbores since I did find a source that said the Russian artillery was re-armed with rifles in 1860 in response to lessons from the Crimean War, implying they weren't rifled in 1854 (during the battle of Balaclava). In any case, a smoothbore gun is more than good enough to hit a mass of cavalry charging right at you (there are situations where it will make a big difference whether your guns are rifled or not, but this was not one of them (you aren't going to turn a gun fast enough to hit an individual horseman anyway)), and even if they were rifled they were still muzzle loaded.

The thing about kriegers: it's not that they see no value in their life, it's that if they (or their superiors) think it's worth it, they will die to take it. they will most likely ignore wounds on other kriegers or themselves if it's a minor wound, but if something that would keep them out of the fight they will be killed. they don't *try* to get themselves killed, but their mindset is that if they die for the emperor, following their orders, then they did their job and so what if they die?

Regarding the charge of the Khorne Berserker and how the Krieg soldiers showed, yet again, that they are just monstrous badasses. A quote from the HH series, specifically about the terror a charging Astartes instills: "Transhuman dread. Aximand had heard iterators talk of the condition. He’d heard descriptions of it from regular Army officers too. The sight of an Adeptus Astartes was one thing: taller and broader than a man could ever be, armoured like a demigod. The singularity of purpose was self-evident. An Adeptus Astartes was designed to fight and kill anything that didn’t annihilate it first. If you saw an Adeptus Astartes, you knew you were in trouble. The appearance alone cowed you with fear." "But to see one move. Apparently that was the real thing. Nothing human-shaped should be so fast, so lithe, so powerful, especially not anything in excess of two metres tall and carrying more armour than four normal men could lift. The sight of an Adeptus Astartes was one thing, but the moving fact of one was quite another. The psychologists called it transhuman dread. It froze a man, stuck him to the ground, caused his mind to lock up, made him lose control of bladder and bowel. Something huge and warlike gave pause: something huge and warlike and moving with the speed of a striking snake, that was when you knew that gods moved amongst men, and that there existed a scale of strength and speed beyond anything mortal, and that you were about to die and, if you were really lucking, there might be just enough time to piss yourself first."

Another example was 1942 in the phillipines the american 26th cavalry division armed with pistols charged and briefly scattered japanese troops but later were forced to eat their own horses as they were starving. Also it should be noted, krieg horses are no ordinary horses, they may be descended from the terran horse, but they are far different, they are tailor bred, and genetically augmented in their own right to be the perfect war horse, and kriegsmen cavalry are called death riders.

If I recall on the thoughts regarding the Crimean War, that'd be the famous Charge of The Light Brigade, during the Battle of Balaclava. Basic gist of it was some manner of mixup led to the Light Brigade of British cavalry being committed to an assault on a hill where the Russians had an artillery position. Despite the losses they did evidently manage to drive the Russian forces off the hill, but were themselves driven off afterward, not helped by the artillerymen retaking their position and peppering them with grapeshot and canister shot. There was a Heavy Brigade present as well, that fared much better during the battle. As for the title of "last true cavalry charge" there's quite a few historical contenders. One contender would include an American cavalry charge during the Battle of Geurrero in 1916, part of the Pancho Villa Expedition. There were also a few charges in the Middle Eastern theater of WWI, usually by mounted infantry. A notable example would be the Battle of Beersheba, by Australian mounted infantry. There's also the famous meme about Polish cavalry charges during WWII. As with most of the WWI examples of successful charges, the ones that did happen involved Polish mounted infantry engaging German infantry and occasionally German cavalry, with a fair bit of success. "Polish cavalry charging tanks" became a meme used by both sides for different propaganda purposes due to instances of armored vehicles seeing off cavalry who were attempting to engage infantry. Funny enough, there's also at least one case where German cavalry scouts decided to charge some Polish infantry they encountered, only to run into Polish tankettes.

12:00 You're referring to the Charge of the Light Brigade and it was indeed British cavalry. It wasn't just a boneheaded move though, as even at that point, every commander knew that charging cavalry straight at artillery was a dumb idea. The problem was a miscommunication in orders! A Russian gun battery was being forced to retreat by the heavy fighting and the British Field Marshal, viewing the battle from the high ground, gave orders to the Light Brigade to capture the retreating guns, as while they were limbered up, they couldn't fire. The Light Brigade's commander, however, was in the low ground in a valley and the only guns he could see was a battery that was still very much in the fight. When he received his orders, he committed his forces to the charge, thinking that his commander meant for him to charge the battery at the end of the valley, only to be hammered by not only artillery, but also rifle fire from the valley slopes, as he charged. Also, you're not quite correct about the Charge of the Light Brigade being the last use of a traditional cavalry charge in warfare. In WW1, there was the last major engagement of cavalry on cavalry, with I believe British forces fighting the Ottoman Empire in North Africa. Following WW1, there was the Polish-Soviet war, where in 1920, a massed charge of the Polish 4th and 5th Cavalry Brigades, resulted in the complete loss of the Soviet 44th Rifle Division and 1st Brigade of the 58th Rifle Division, as well as the Poles driving a wedge between the Soviet 14th and 12th Armies and the capture of the vital railway hub and supply depot at Koziatyn - a victory that would ultimately decide the entire fate of the war in Poland's favour! Following this in 1942, Philippine cavalry and the US 26th Cavalry Regiment armed with pistols, scattered a Japanese attack and later that same year, 600 Italian cavalrymen on the Don river, forced the retreat of 2000 Soviet infantry, despite staggering losses. This is of course, to say nothing of smaller-scale charges that apparently occurred into the 1970s, as well as the role that highly mobile mounted infantry, acting much the same way that 19th-century Dragoons would have done, still play in conflicts in Africa and the Middle East.

When moral is thrown to the wind where even commisar aren’t actually needed then by all means, and that’s what makes them soo unique whereas with cadia they would be the Americans where they value their life because, every life saved is another one for the next battle, but krieg, they don’t care and whilst yes they are fanatical to the point where it would make a black Templar blush, they aren’t stupid they do value their lives since that’s pure basic instincts however they won’t die for no reason (ISIS🤣😂) but will happily kill them selves in order to complete a mission ie blowing up a pill box and I would truly love to see an encounter where a krieg regiment has to fight with the mecarbian janisaries 🤣😂😂, shots would be all over the place 🤣😂, but as I said as long as their will to fight and die out weighs that of their enemies then the battle is already won, it’s just about knowing when

yeah, the death korp may welcome death in the name of the emperor, but they do not welcome needless sacrifice. they know when they are outgunned, they know when they are outmaneuvered, and unless they have been ordered to take or hold a position at all costs they are not afraid to fall back if it becomes apparent that they are just throwing men away for no gain or to reorganize for a counter attack. but if they have been ordered to take or hold a position at all costs, emperor help the opposition at that position as each kriegsman will fight with all their strength unto their dying breath because orders are orders, and a good kriegsman does not question orders from his superiors.

While everyone seem to believe that our favorite shovel boys are stoic and silent (which they are..most of the time) as a military personnel (thank you for your service) it’s kinda strange what you find that they talk weird strange, the concept they don’t talk at all which is detrimental in combat is kinda dumb (awesome video can’t wait for the next one!)

12:10 first confirmed british on german kill on WW1 was a cavalary charge, before the Trench-Warfare stage of that war, and WW2 had plenty of animal-tracked weapons + animal-transported personnel (though only the winged hussards and the cossacks are reported to have charged the enemy while riding horses). What killed cavalary in WW1 were the entrenched positions (horses just can't charge through barbed wire, and being larger than a single human, they were easier targets) As for what killed cavalary in WW2, it was not the technology per say (cavalary could still charge down infantary if not properly defended), but the lack of mobility. Tanks and armored cars are just faster to move around when you have the oil to keep them running, and it was a reallys fast warfare. The horse isn't fit for neither "sieges" (even if against a mere bunker), modern fast warfare (pretty much every para-military in the world by now is, at least, motorized), nor ambush (not stealth enough), which make them way too limited to be used in modern warfare, but against foes that won't either entrench themselves or outrun you with armored cars, the cavalary is actually still an option... hence why many police forces in the world still employes cavalary. Against riots, cavalary and shieldwalls are still extremelly effective.

The charge of the british light brigade was nearly not the end of cavalry charges. In the first world war european powers still used cavalry charges if the time was right. On the eastern front it was also pretty common for cossacks or hungarian hussars (both known for devastating hit and run tactics and sudden charges) to charge the enemy if it wasn't suicide (and engage eachother). Also, there were some pretty big cavalry battles (e.g. battle of komarów, after ww1). My great grandfather was a hussar in the hungarian army of ww2, his regiment supposedly charged the russians. They failed (grandparents aren't the best objective source, but its a fact that we still used hussars) and got decimated (but some italians succeeded with one of their charges, you can google it). It never ended, its just extremely rare today.
