This band molded my childhood. I am a black suburban kid from Chicago area....my peers were listening to Tupac x Wu Tang x DMX x Nelly growing up x me? When I lost my best friend to suicide, I was 18 years old and we lost him on 12/29/2000. This song was my lifeline for years after his death. And just over a week ago, on 12/20/2022, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to pull my beautiful, strong, and tenacious mother off of life support after a brief and debilitating illness that killed her from the inside out. My Dad past away 3 days before Christmas in 2019 I spent a week in the hospital with him before he passed. This song always reminds me of the time I spent with him his last few days which was definitely the longest December I can remember. I'm thankful this song gives me the opportunity to think about my dad and helps me with the grief of such a great personal loss.

I'll be turning 40 in May of 2021, and I come back to songs like these from time to time and sit and listen as memories start playing like a movie in my head. 17 year old me, with my Jncos and cardigan, so full of angst, downloading Nirvana .Avi files over a 14.4 dial up modem, listening to my dad bitch about how I'm wasting my life. Nights spent with friends riding around doing dumb shit. Hours I sat and worried if I would make it to 21 or if I would ever find love. 23 years later, I'm married with three children with an awesome career and I couldn't be more happier, thankful, and feel so blessed. For anyone out there going through tough times, just remember they will pass. Be steadfast and vigilant and you'll come out on the other side stronger than ever. Love you guys! Peace and love. I hurt for friends I've lost when I hear this song. When I was young, I thought life would always be the way it was. Lots of friends, lots of fun times and always something to look forward to. Shared that with my oldest recently as she was born in the spring of 97. I was 23, 4th year in the army, second year of marriage driving everywhere to look for a home before my daughter was born. ended up with 2 more kids after but been divorced now for 7 yrs. One of my favourite Counting Crows tracks, poignant in the fact 25yrs ago I lost my father, and it was in fact a Long December getting over his passing. We didn't see eye to eye on much of my musical tastes, but he'd have loved these guys. Had the chance for a meet and greet with a soundcheck experience last year, which was amazing, they sang this on the night, and even though it bought a lump to the throat, it brought back happy memories of my dad. Never heard of Counting Crows till I was desperately trying to make it through nursing school and would walk a trail around a lake where there were turtles and ducks. One spring evening, I heard "Take a Holiday to Spain" wafting across the water at one of my lowest points - all I wanted to do was help people in a good, solid, concrete way as a nurse and raise my kids with my husband and keep ourselves afloat. Doubted if I had the strength to do it. A wedding was getting set up beside the lake and the workers were playing Counting Crows. I had to research who the heck sang Holdiay to Spain, or was it a local group's stellar song that never got recorded? Then, I found Counting Crows and the fan group (way before social media) and CC music and this song. This song, for sure, was my secret theme song getting through clinical rotations in trauma and cardiac. Yeah...That was long before I got up the gumption to get involved in other areas and discovered the grace involved in hospice. Thank you, Adam, for just saying it as it is. I felt like I could crumble many days in clincial care in various nursing settings and when I came home learning how to become a nurse. My husband died not long after I became a nurse and I had no support whatsoever from his family. But, I had my license and I had a big heart, good skills, and my patients KNEW that I genuinely cared. Thanks for the music that got me there.
