Czechia doesn't have two capitals, only one Prague, Czechia is divided into 3 three big regions, Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia and every one of them have their own "capital city" Prague, Brno, Ostrava. So officialy czechia has only one capital, Prague, but if you want to count it by the regions, than it has 3. The reason why you mentioning only Prague and Brno is maybe because people from these cities and nearby regions really likes to compete with each other and sometimes there is also a bit of hate in there. A lot of people are stubborn and are living in the past. But they are all czechs with the same Capital Prague, no matter where they live. I never heared of that Czechia has two capitals. Through out the history, capital was changing and the place where the king resided also changed. But now for a long time the only capital is Prague. I don't think that only because Brno has supreme court it makes Brno the second capital. But if I'm wrong and it is official and you can point me on some czechs report on this topic, feel free to correct me.

The Bundesverfassungsgericht (the equivalent to the supreme court or constititional court) is seated in Karlsruhe in the southwest. Therefore the definition at the end of the video applies. With Bonn you can argue, there are still some government agencies there and sometimes (branches of) ministries. The "major" part moved to Berlin though. Nevertheless, no one in Germany considers Karlsruhe as capital, Bonn might be regarded as one by a minority.
@njordholm2 жыл бұрын
@@Bema1001 Bonn has a unique status, it's called "Bundesstadt". As you have already stated above, the ministries headquaters are devided between Berlin and Bonn and they have second seats in Berlin/Bonn vice versa. The "Bundespräsident", "Bundeskanzler" and "Bundesrat" also have a second seat of their institution there. Additionally there is the history of Bonn as capital of the BRD during times of cold war and as well, it's still called and has the title of "UN-Stadt", as there are several headquarters of UN insitutions. So if you are looking at it from an external point of view, where there is no different word for "(Bundes-)Hauptstadt and "Bundesstadt", you can come to the conclusion, that there are two capitals. When it comes to the "Bundesverfassungsgericht" as supreme court and one of the "Verfassungsorgane" beside the above mentioned, which has its headquarter in Karlsruhe, there is also a special point to consider. There are "befriedete Berzirke", I would say DMZ (demilitarised zone) suits mosts for translation, where public meetings such as demonstrations are generally forbidden, if the federal interior minster and the president of the institution wouldn't allow it especially. There are 3 DMZ, one surround the "Reichstag" as place for the parliament, called "Bundestag" and another one surround the "Bundesrat" which headquarters are both in Berlin. The 3rd and last one is surround the "Bundesverfassungsgericht" in Karlsruhe. This makes Karlsruhe unique against all other German cities (- Berlin). If there are some other countries in the world, which consider the headquarter of its supreme court as capital, you can say, Karlsruhe could be considered as Germany's 3rd capital, if you would like to make a general comparison.

The author of this vid explained that in this case he uses the definition of a capital city as a city where important state institutions are placed. In this sense, Brno is indeed a capital as well. Brno is a centre of the Czech judiciary, with the seats of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court, and the Supreme Public Prosecutor's Office, and a number of state authorities, including the Ombudsman and the Office for the Protection of Competition (Wiki). So yes, to you and me (both being Czechs) it may sound strange, but the author is right :)

Ani to tak nebylo myšleno, myslím, že to bylo spíše z praktických důvodů, dříve v té budově sídlil Moravský zemský sněm a budova byla nevyužita. A navíc, Vrchní soud v Praze a Olomouci, ne Brně. Actually Germany has also kind of two capitals: "Bundeshauptstadt Berlin" and "Bundesstadt Bonn". While in Berlin there is the headquarters of the Bundestag, Bundesrat, the Federal Government, the Federal President and 8 ministries, Bonn is the headquarters of the 6 other ministries, most of the federal authorities and a second seat of the Bundeskanzler, Federal President and the Bundesrat. When you also include the Supreme Court Germany actually has three capital cities with Karlsruhe being the headquarter of the Bundesverfassungsgericht.

Your definition of "multiple capitals" is absolutely loony. In a many countries, especially multilingual or federally organized ones, government institutions are distributed across different regions. No sane person would ever think of calling Brno in the Czech Republic, Karlsruhe in Germany or Lausanne in Switzerland (just as an example) the capital just because the Supreme Court is located there. According to your definition, there are 30 capitals in Germany, including such world-famous metropolises as Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Braunschweig, Flensburg, Hürth or Salzgitter. However, because of the massive overcrowding of Seoul, one of the most populated metropolitan cities in the world, and because of its proximity to the border with the North, Sejong City was constitutionally established and has already received several government institutions over the last 2 decades or so, including emergency functions for the Legislative and Executive branches should Seoul come under attack or get captured. In the interim the Hague took over as temporary capital and the provisionary Dutch government settled there. When Amsterdam was finally liberated/conquered and all the Spanish loyalists (catholic) in power were replaced by supporters of the revolt (protestant) the Hague had established itself as the seat of government and it was decided to keep it this way. Amsterdam did become the capital because it was the richest and most powerful, but the Hague remained kind of the de facto capital by retaining the government thus being the seat of power. Hello. Greetings from Costa Rica. I would like to contribute with this historical part of my country. Long ago, the capital of Costa Rica was Cartago, but later, there was a law in Costa Rica called "Ley de la Ambulancia", which stated that the capital of the country will move each four years to one of the four main provinces of the country, being them Cartago, San José, Alajuela and Heredia. When this law was eliminated, the current capital was San José, and that is why our capital is Now San José and not Cartago.

This is very interesting. However, as you seem to concede towards the end, most people wouldn’t regard these as cases of 2 capitals, but rather the distribution of some political, judicial or administrative functions to other parts of the country.

A few more facts about Chile: - While the main seat of Congress is in Valparaíso since 1990, the old Congress building in Santiago is still in use. Plenary sessions of the chambers of Congress and the presidential account (a speech similar to the state of the union adress) must be held in Valparaíso, but the rest of legislative work (like legislative comissions) is done in both venues. - Santiago has been the capital of Chile from 1541 to 1556 and then, continously, from 1607 to this day. This is, of course, because Spanish colonies had their own capitals. - As mentioned, the national HQ of some amministrative institutions are located in Valparaíso. The reason is that it made more sense for those institutions to be located in a port city instead of land locked Santiago (navy, customs and fishing service). The exception would be the Ministry of Culture, but Valparaíso is a city with a lot of cultural heritage and a UNESCO world heritage site, so that's the reason. - While under the broad definition of capital you can consider Valparaíso a capital, it is not officially a capital city and no one in Chile has ever considered it a capital. - Moving the seats of some institutions to Valparaíso (a process called "delocalization") has not brought any decentralization at all to an already very centralized Chile. What matters for decentralization is what policies are made and how. The where is irrelevant.

In Greece we call Thessaloniki, co-capital (συμπρωτεύουσα), it's the second largest city in Greece and has been really important throughout history. But Athens is the capital from 1834 (before Athens it was Nafplio - Ναύπλιο)

Brno was pronounced more or less correctly, as was Znojmo, but Olomouc wasn't even close :D Close approximation, "ou" reads like "oa" in "boat" and "c" sounds like "ts" Also, I don't know where you got the population numbers, but Brno has less than 400k and Prague has around 1,5 mil. And lastly, no one here considers Brno a second capital. The supreme court was founded in the short period of time between fall of communism and split of Czechoslovakia so the main reasons most likely were: 1) proximity to Bratislava, so it can be seen to be "half-way" between Czech and Slovak Part of Czechoslovakia 2) decentralization of power. The communists liked to put everything in Prague, this was supposed to show around Czechoslovakia that things will change. But still, great video, always love it when we at least get mentioned ;)

I agree with everything you have said, with one correction only: "Brno has less than 400k and Prague has around 1,5 mil" - his numbers, 606k for Brno and 2,7 Mio for Prague are correct, if you count the suburbs and metropolitan areas as well.. So actually, both of you are correct
@Aedar4 жыл бұрын
@@viktornovomestsky3999 I can't speak for Brno, only been there like twice, but I think that 2,7 for Prague is still a bit too much. I also saw these numbers before, and I stil disagree... 2,7 counts both Prague itself (1,3) and the entire central bohemian region (1,4). BUT! many of the cities in central bohemian region are too far to be considered part of Prague. Realistically you can only consider a prt of this region to be "Prague" personally I wouldn't go past 1,8, but you're right, when you start counting sorrounding villages etc. it's hard to get exact number and definition :) Also I don't really care nearly enough to argue about it, so like you said, we're both correct :D
@viktornovomestsky39994 жыл бұрын
@@Aedar You're right, it's hard to get the exact number.. But in the future, with the expansion of Prague, the central bohemian region will get swallowed by it, therefore it will be correct then.. But yeah, according to the official data, Prague city itself has 1,3 Mio citizens only, though the number is expected to rise sharply in the coming years (happened after the 2015 migrant crisis already, when a lot of western EU neighbors moved to CZ)...

@@Aedar Now question is whether we will consider only people wit permanent residency in Prague or people that actually live there and in it's metropolitan area.Then his number can be close. As well if he is from "New World" he could with ease consider whole Central Bohemia as metropolitan area of Prague. Take in account that in many parts of the world it would be so. As well take in account that if we would say that metropolitan area is around 30 minutes from city centre by train, it can under certain conditions include places as far as 60km.
