To be fair, turning the Zuidersea into the IJsselmeer wansn't really planned or the intention. It was more of a side-effect as the sea was cut off from the ocean but kept its influx of freshwater from rivers.

But there are large misconceptions about our war against the water. The reason that most of our land lies so low is because of inpolderen, turfvaart, and the drainage of veen. We damaged our ecosystems and caused the ground to sink over 4 meters lower in some places. And since the polders are basically the bottom of the sea, this didn't help the average elevation. The truth is we largely caused it all ourselves.

I am only 50% Dutch and 50% German living in Germany. Watching this video I must agree that The Netherlands is quite a country. It is amazingly well organised, has influenced the world with 2 Golden Ages, invented from the cassetterecorder, to the CD (with Sony), to Bluetooth to just name a few things from the recent past. Or the microscope, the telescope to name some objects from a farther past. It does not matter where you are in this world, wether visiting Machu Pichu, strolling around in Marrakech, just drinking a coffee in Kingston or lying on a beach in Rhodes, there is always someone from The Netherlands around. Small country, but I must say, a huge country when it comes down to its influence worldwide. The Dutch themselves love to complain about, well............everything. That constantly complaining could just be the key to so many new inventions and improvements. Leading the world in water management, medical equipment, major trader, importer and exporter and as we love to say in Germany; The Netherlands is our 17th Bundesland (17th state) and the royal family is also our royal family. Germany imports amazing amounts of goods from our neighbour and with the exception of those Wasserbomben Tomaten (waterbomb tomatoes from The Netherlands), all other products are extremely good.

@@Nick-vd7cg I know. Funny thing though. Once the Dutch realized that we would not buy those tomatoes anymore, within a month amazingly tasty tomatoes from The Netherlands hit our market and trust was regained. How they did that we'll probably never know, but it worked wonders.

My in-laws once made the statement: No matter where you go, there will always be a Dutch person nearby... Since them saying this, I've been paying more attention. So far this has been true on every trip outside the Netherlands I've been on. There has always been a Dutchy, either on travel as well, or that migrated to that particular place.

Correction: Amsterdam was NEVER besieged by Alva's troops, since Amsterdam was firmly on the side of the Spanish.(Which is why Haarlem fell, essentially, since Amsterdam killed the "Geuzen-Fleet" that provided Haarlems provisions) It wasn't until long after Alva retreated for good they switched sides. The "Skate-battles"" described probably took place either at the siege of Haarlem or Alkmaar.

Great videos! Excellent presentation and fun to watch. I've watched both but what I am missing a bit is Surinam (which most of these videos at least mention) or the old name (slave colony) Dutch Guiana. The place the Dutch traded for Manhattan with the British in 1667 and the only other sovereign country in the world where standard Dutch is still the (only) official language. It went independant in 1975 and almost half of its then population of 350.000 migrated to The Netherlands because they had to choose. Surinam (together with the Dutch islands) was pivotal during the WWII when it provided the Dutch with food and resources and harboured many Jewish people until after the war, out of reach of the Germans. Even after the war during the famine it continued to provide food and resources for the Dutch. It is by far the largest etnic group and famous for it's many restaurants that have become s staple of the Dutch food cuisine. They serve a mix of Surinam Chinese, Indian (Hindoestani), Creool (local/slave native American old African/Dutch/Jewish based) and Indonesian (Javanese) dishes and beverages. Together these are a mix of the largest etnic groups in Surinam. Also most of the street language especially in big cities is Surinam based. After a close relationship of more than 350 years the Surinam culture and its people have become an intregal part of the Dutch society and it is very hard not to come across its elements when visiting The Netherlands even in the more rural parts. But especially in The Randstad in cities like Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Utrecht, etc. Maybe it's been "overlooked" because it's part of the Dutch darker history of colonial exploit and slave trade but with its 350 year and counting relationship it has become an undeniable and important part of the Dutch (his)story.
@ifer1280
@ifer1280 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that last sentence has a lot of truth. Surnamese people are the best, and the history between Surinam and The Netherlands is important. But its so hard to acknowledge that in a positive light given the roots of this relationship: slaves from africa and indentured servants from asia, brought to the colony by the Dutch.
@jurgenolivieira1878
@jurgenolivieira1878 2 жыл бұрын
@@ifer1280 Gee, thanks you're making us blush, hahaha. What also makes it more diffucult I think is that diffenernt than the ABC islands (which have a similar history) Surinam is no longer part of the Kingdom. Partly through their own arrogance, stubornance and corruption. Partly through political gains, prestige and corruption on the Dutch side. Surinam was way to young and way to "small" for it's independance (5x size of NL, only 400k people). And almost all intelectuals choose to go to the Netherlands in 1975 (all people had to choose between Netherlands or Surinam. This left a major vacuum in knowledge and expertise and caused almost most global coorporations to collaps. For exanple before 1975 Surinan was the biggest exporter of sugar in the world and a major rice exporter. Nowadays it's just about non-existent...

Stop complaining about the past, without the Dutch, Suriname was only some more Brazil Amazon wood. Many Africans that went there and other colonies, would have butchered each other in Africa because of tribe fights, which happened a lot, and/or be in hunger and thirst. At least, they had work , a regular life and food and drink now . Btw, in Belgium, Dutch is also official, so Suriname is not the only other one.

@@yt-nx1qm And talking about butchering... have you ever even looked at European history The Middle Ages, The Crusades, 30 years war, 80 years war, war, war, war going back to the Romans and way before. And as a cherry on the pie Europe has fought 2 world wars killing by the millions, even carpet/fire bombing civilians killing ten of thoussands. Currenly Russia is trying to occupy sovereign Ukraine with high-tech war machines and bombs targetting civilians... And you talk about in-fighting in Africa. How sad... Europeans have butchered more Europeans and (with their then modern weapons) more Africans than the Africans have ever done themselves to date.

ASML That company is unique in the World. All the technological process advancements to make computer chips, stem from them. They make the tools that Intel, Samsung, TSMC and NXP, among many others, use to manufacture chips. ~90% of all chips we have in our homes, in the entire world, passed a machine from ASML. Making these wooden clogs from a block of wood is a craft that's about to go extinct and there are only very few craftsman that still know how to make them. Not sure in the Netherlands but there are few left in Belgium. I saw that you named the hockey players too, fun fact about that the woman won the worldcup 3 times in a row 2014, 2018 and 2022. In additoin to that a very good video and keep it up!

I'd love to see people cover that someday, because even here it isn't widely taught.

just to make it clear. 'gezellig' is a mood but also some people can say that someone is. there's indeed no word for it in english, but I discribe it when you can have fun with someone, feel cozy and connected. this can be big as with a friend, or just a casual fun converstation with a stranger.

I believe the bluntess slowely becomes less due to a lot of collaboration with foreigners. Sure we are still more direct than other cultures, but it will become less. The older generation however will stay direct for sure. In my opinion, directness is a massive help if it is supported with arguments. If you do something wrong, you want to know what you did wrong right? no going around that. But make sure you tell them how they can change their wrong-doings.

Very good. The pronunciation of the Dutch words/names is almost 100 percent wrong though. Perhaps you should ask a Dutchy next time.
