Legendary 3 piece rock band. My favorite quote about Neil Peart, "He's your favorite drumer's favorite drummer." I think it was Dave Grohl who said that. If you really want to see a crowd go nuts, watch "YYZ" in Rio.

Rush is what happens when the smartest kid in school (drummer) teams up with the multitasking tech wizard (bass) and the class clown (guitar) to form a band. All three of whom just also happen to be musically gifted prodigies on an unparalleled level. I'd recommend 'Leave that thing Alone' from the Time Machine Tour. It's an instrumental so you don't have to worry about lyrics. 😂kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZPWdJKcfKaljMU

"YYZ Live in Rio" is incredible---the only time you will see an audience singing along to an instrumental song. Also "YYZ" is the airport code for Toronto airport where they are from, and the song actually starts out with Morse code (in music) reading "Y-Y-Z"...this band is like no other to ever exist, enjoy the rabbit hole. Oh, and the drummer (Neil Peart) wrote the lyrics to their songs....how many drummers did that? (Phil Collins notwithstanding)

RUSH in Rio is amazing! The audience participation is evident even in the audio recording, and they loved it when the band played “Closer to the Heart,” which they hadn’t played live in years. They heard that it was a favorite in Brazil, so they played it for them. That’s because RUSH appreciated and respected their fans. Class acts, all three of them.

Quintessential Rush starter pack to check out: “The Spirit of Radio” “YYZ” (Instrumental) “La Villa Strangiato” (Instrumental) “Xanadu” “Working Man” “2112” (Set aside a whole day to dissect this one) “Subdivisions” “Red Barchetta” These, along with “Tom Sawyer,” are the starting blocks to launch you into the deep catalog exploration. They have 20 albums worth of music. You will not regret this rabbit hole. In fact, the more you listen to their different eras (yes, I said eras), the more you will begin to hear the inspiration they gave other bands like Dream Theater.

I would argue "Kid Gloves", from the album Grace Under Pressure, deserves to be on that list . It illustrates Alex Lifeson's changing his sound yet still pulling off badass riffs . I've play electric guitar since I got bored with beating around on an old acoustic and my parents got me my first electric on my 5th Birthday in 1972, and I never looked back. I've seen literally thousands of guitars, incidentally I was lucky enough to have an uncle who don't do music store, through which I've met literally thousands of musicians. It's nice to see Alex rice and finally getting some of the recognition that he should have been receiving 30 years ago. I used to contend he was the most underrated guitar player in the world and at the time (the '80s '90s and 70s) he was and the band in general was also. I mean come on they weren't even inducted into the Hall of Fame until 2013!?!? What a travesty when you look up how many one hit wonders and flash in the pans here today gone tomorrow artists were inducted long before this trio of virtuosos. I once was asked the question if you're stuck on a desert island for the rest of your life and can only listen to one album what would that album be and after 20 years of pondering that question I have came to the conclusion that that album would be Permanent Waves by Rush the album right before the album Tom Sawyer came off of . One could say I like that album because it is about the last album getting synthesizes were more of a background instrument which help round out and fill out their sound and they came more to the forefront and while I believe that is true I don't think that is why I picked that album I think I choose permanent waves because whenever I listen to that album it sounds to me like it was not a labor of love that album sounds to me and I may be wrong, but when I listen to it it sounds like they had fun making this album. The record company had gotten off of their backs after the success of 2112 so they were not restrained and I think they just went in and had fun recording that album.

I've listened to a ton of bands over the years but Rush are in another league entirely. As a 3 piece outfit, they really have no equal for skill & longevity. We're talking about a 40+ year career here, with a back catalogue of supreme music that no band can really touch. When we talk about legendary rock groups, Rush pretty much take front of stage.
@matthewhoag26092 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I love to see any musician discover Rush. All three of them are virtuosos. Many talk about Neil Peart being one of the greatest rock drummers of all times, but the same could be said of the other two on their respective instruments. Yeah, Geddy plays a mean bass, keys, and sings, but you missed him on the Taurus pedals with his feet. Basically, a set of synth organ pedals. He was using them to trigger the spacey sweeping synth sounds during the intro. Want to see the multi-tasking taken to the next level, check out Xanadu live from the 1981 Exit Stage Left tour. Geddy has a double-neck bass/12-string, keys, pedals, and, of course, is still singing. The fullest sounding band live - incredible what a three-piece can pull off. The synth sound at the start is the Moog Taurus bass synthesizer. It is played by using your feet. Neil the drummer has a hybrid drum kit. The drum kit is two different drum kits combined. The acoustic drums are Drum Workshop. The electronic kit is made by Roland. The other device is the xylophone looking one . That device is called the MIDI Mallet. Rush does not use any hidden performers like some bands do. Each member of rush plays some kind of synthesizer or sampler. Neil does it with drums. Geddy and Alex the guitarist both have Moog Taurus bass pedals played with their feet. A lot of bands hide their session keyboard player behind or under the stage

You were talking about the lead guitarist (Alex Lifeson's) sense of humor. Yes it's true, but all 3 of them have/had great senses of humor. In that last section of your video, where you froze the Rush video, did you happen to notice Alex's amplifier stack? He jams the place with equipment. Geddy Lee (lead vocals, bass, and keys) pushes his bass through the facility's PA system, so he doesn't have that massive amp stack behind him. In its place, he substituted other things to fill in the emptiness. In this video he has a line of 3... wait for it... commercial chicken rotisseries. Complete with a "chef" who would come out on stage and baste the birds every so often. They also used clothes dryers that were filled with t-shirts that weren't available on the merch stands, and they were known to toss the t-shirts out to the crowd at the end of a concert.

When Rush started out, Geddy Lee did not play keyboards, but as their music progressed, they wanted to add that sound. In their wanting to stay true to just the 3 of them and not add other members, Lee said, well, I'll have to learn how to play keyboards! After Tom Sawyer, the most well known Rush songs are probably “Limelight” and “Closer to the Heart.” There are a lot of other great songs from them too, but I’d recommend starting with those. If you want to dig a little deeper, a few of my favorites are “Prime Mover,” “A Farewell to Kings,” “Dreamliner,” “Mission,” “The Camera Eye,” “Marathon…” I could go on and on. They also did some very long songs like “2112,” which I actually consider to be more of a short album than it is a long song. They put on a great show and like all Rush fans, I was heartbroken to hear the news about Neil Peart a couple of years ago.

Xanadu from Rio, Camera’s Eye from Cleveland. There is even a high school concert from before Neil came to the band when they were still teens. In Jan. of 2020, "Professor" Neil Peart died of brain tumor. Alex Lifeson, guitarist, is retired from touring. Geddy Lee, keyboardist, bassist, and singer is still active with some projects.

Check out live version of Xanadu, Geddy's double neck is sick! It's a guitar on the top and the base on the bottom it's crazy! Also La Villa strangiato is epic!

his head shake at 5:56 is a head shake many of us Rush fans have made when watching Neil being Neil.

There's a nice little guitar solo Alex Lifeson does at the beginning of La Villa Strangiato - the Pinkpop performance which you can easily find on YT

At least 2 different videos of this song when Rush was in their prime. Exit Stage Left for 'live' when the song was new, and the Official for them recording it in the studio (my favorite). Welcome to the Rush rabbit-hole!

I was so lucky to have picked up Fly By Night back in 1976-77 and have basically lived a Life with Rush as my soundtrack….I have diverse musical tastes but Rush will never be matched for me.

So true! I grew up with RUSH being THE major influence on me. I started off playing bass, over time I was able to play a few RUSH songs where I’d play bass, sing, play keyboards and also bass synth pedals. It took time, up since the songs were originally written that way, it wasn’t as difficult as I’d first thought. Playing bass and singing on other songs that were far more simple was actually harder for me because the bass line was contrapuntal to the singing melody.

Yeah I remember first discovering Rush. Their album 2112 had just come out and I knew they were going to the top. I have been a fan ever since. Neil Peart was the best ever. He even had the nick name The Professor because so many drummers were awed by his ability

I saw Rush four or five times if you count going back the next night by scalping ticket. Even when they just played in Toronto bars they had this full deep sound. You could feel the power knocking you over and surrounding you. It’s a vibe like no other. They rose to the very pinnacle because of their loyal fan base that just grew and grew over the years. The radio stations wouldn’t play their music and the music critics never supported them so they built their following by relentlessly touring the northern middle American cities. Being Canadian they also toured Canadian cities. This an example of building their reputation through hard work and perfecting their musicianship on the road. They have the very best loyal fan base I have ever seen. Everyone of these guys are s teir musicians. That’s why they are in the Rock n Roll hall of fame. Because their fans demanded it.

Every. Single. Drummer. Alive, references Rush as their inspiration. Only recommendation I can give is to listen to some of the studio versions first ONLY because they were around for 40 years. A song they did 7 years in to their career isn't going to sound the same live 33 years later simply due to technology and vocal range/age.

Just finished watching the most amazing interview just released on KZbin today where Alex & Geddy talk about life after Rush their frustration with not being able to continue, the time when Neil was sick, handling the grieving and how life has moved on since. They are still great friends even though they haven't played any music together since the R40 tour. Enjoyed Alex's new project Envy of None, it is NOT Rush but it is enjoyable.

Rush is Awesome!! Further on your noticing their musical talents... both Geddy and Alex stomp on Moog Taurus Bass pedals on top of everything else you mentioned !! Cheers !!!

Glad you got to Rush. Saw them seven times, tied with Yes (also seven) in that regard. I would advice you to see Rush as a continuous developing musical voice. Very early the sound is harder, then they got from Yes some complexity, and after 1982 they became an interactive musical sponge that pretty much went a step beyond what was contemporary. "Villa Strangiatto", "Far Cry", "Natural Science", "Animate", are all awesome and different. Enjoy.

I got into RUSH from the beginning and as good as their first seven albums were, including A L W A S , I think they finished with their best in the end with CLOCKWORK ANGELS !

If you watch Geddy closely you will see while he's playing the bass and singing, he's also playing the floor keyboards. While he's playing the keyboards you can still hear a bass guitar playing which is also floor keyboards.

Lee and Lifeson both used Taurus pedals for bass riffs primarily, but also to trigger synthesizers, as well.

Alex is also sometimes triggering things with his feet. I love the way he clowns on stage. You have to be extremely confident in what you're playing to do that. As others have said, all three of them are very funny but Alex is the funniest. You mentioned Geddy's voice. It is very good here but veteran Rush fans recognise that, at this age, his voice was not quite what it used to be.
@leehanson14162 жыл бұрын
Geddy's voice has aged like a fine wine, IMO. It's richer and less, um, shrill than it used to be. When Rush played side 1 of 2112, they used Eb tuning to give Geddy a bit of a break on the really high passages. The rest of the night, they stayed in standard tuning, and Geddy was sometimes using the octave below.

Well done friend! I have watched tons of these Rush reaction video’s and hearing so many perspectives is really nothing short of pure bliss! And yours is no exception! I just saw this was done 2 years ago so you definitely have been gifted many times over by now. In my humble opinion, although their live stuff is amazing, their studio work is second to none and if i want to have a divine experience right here on earth i just listen to the full version of 2112! And there are sooo many more! ❤Thanks for making this very cool vid, look forward to checking out your channel and all the gems that await this Rush fans inner child! ♥️

As for Geddy's voice, this is very good, but you should go back in time to their earlier stuff. You will be blown away by the highs he can hit. Look for the original version of Tom Sawyer.
