I have a dear friend who passed away this week. This song and our friendship had no direct correlation while he was alive, but the other day when I went to see him one last time before we buried him I played this song on the drive over and I cried like I'd never done before. Now I can't listen without crying...I miss you buddy.

When we had been married about two years, this song came out. I fell in love with it. We didn't have the money to buy frivolous things like albums but one day my wonderful, generous husband walked through the door with this album for me. This came up on my playlist today and reminded of that sweet memory. I love this song as much today as I did 43 years ago.

This song reminds me of how life used to be. My mom passed away in 1994 from cancer at the age of 51, the same age as i am right now. It reminds me of her and seeing the frost out on the pumpkins when she was here. My childhood. This song makes me cry because i remember what i was, and those feelings i can't let go of from that time period in my life. The hard thing is, is that i won't get back that time to make changes within myself. It makes me cry because those feelings over-rush me as if i was still that younger version of myself that needed my mother. I still need my mother so much, but she's been gone for 24 years now.

This was when Country was Country. I miss those days and I certainly miss the heart touching country ballads. Just makes me so sad. We have lost so many of our “Traditional Country Singers “ and sadly what they consider to be Country today is garbage.

Hi Daryl, I am African. I love hip hop. I love reggae. I love country. This song is a masterpiece and i literally cried listening. But truth is times they are a-changing. I grew up listening to pops playing these lovely song. There are some new guys around that make awesone country music. But the nostalgia we have can prevent us from enjoying them. Its same in hip hop, reggae, even afro beat. Lets give the new guys a chance.
@snakemansnakes1

@@itatreeneetee I agree with you Ita. 20 or 30 years from now there will be oldtimers saying the same things about how much they miss the music of today. It's a repeating cycle without a doubt. I will always be giving the new guys and girls a chance because I find there are some truly great singers out there. I love Old Country myself but still make room for other kinds of music to get in. I follow the modern duo called First Aid Kit and think they are really good. Then there is a large group of youngsters from Norway who started out in 2014 and they do Bluegrass which is amazing to hear. They are on KZbin and they are called Hayde Blue Grass Orchestra, their cover of the traditional song Wayfaring Stranger is superb. Good to meet you.

I grew up on classic country (much of it from before my time) thanks to my parents, and grandparents. I’m 31 now. So glad that I did. I moved away from it eventually but still always loved and played it from time to time. Obviously I still do. Music is so bad now that I appreciate this stuff even more now. Plus all of the wonderful childhood memories. I miss this. When music had feeling still. This is also my favorite classic country song of all time.

Simply....FANTASTIC!!...this lil' country ditty was the 13th song from the year 1974 to reach the #1 spot on the country charts...(there were 40 #1 songs total that year!)...Cal made it to the top spot the week of May 18, 1974, for 1 week with this classic!.It's terrific also to hear the original 1974 version of this, and not some "re-make".....Thanks for posting and sharing with all of us "fellow youtubers", and I hope your week is going well Daniel...Take Care! I was 12 when this song came out. I heard it on the radio... bawled my eyes out... and fell in love with it. I still love it just as much all these years later.

This is the kind of music my daddy raised me on. I remember riding in the semi with my step dad too.. during the summer singing along to almost every song we knew. I can remember riding in the truck with my Pah-Paw and listening to John Conlee, Cal Smith, Ferlin Husky, George Jones, Webb Peirce, Ray Price, Charlie Pride and many many more. I would have to agree with Patrick Saxon when he says they just don't make music like this anymore. I love it. Don't get me wrong, I like alot of the new country and alot of rock ranging from the 50's and on up. I just love music in general, but if I had to pick a genre and stick with it... I'd have to pick good ole country music from the 40's and into the 80's. I am a big fan of Johnny Cash (Cry, Cry, Cry and One Piece At A Time) John Anderson (Swingin, Straight Tequila Night and Seminole Wind), John Conlee (Too many to name) and my Pah-Paw's ultimate favorite- George Jones (White Lightin') Good memories. I miss my Pah-Paw like nobody's business. :-(

I remember first hearing this as a kid on the grandparents' AM radio in the car. Liked it then and it's still a classic. This is a fine example of real country music.

Man you would never guess the deep and rich meaning in this song unless you take the time to really listen to the lyrics. You think it's just a nice melody, light and easy listening, and then the lyrics hit you square in the heart, your jaw drops just a little when you realize this old Country-Western song just reached through time and taught you a lesson about rushing to judge something or someone. Bravo Mr. Smith. He walked into the bar and parked his lanky frame upon a tall barstool And with a long soft Southern drawl said "I'll just have a glass of anything that's cool" A barroom girl with hard and knowing eyes slowly looked him up and down And she thought "I wonder how on earth That country bumpkin found his way to town"She said "Hello, country bumpkin" "How's the frost out on the pumpkin?" "I've seen some sights but, man, you're somethin'" "Where'd ya come from, country bumpkin?"It was just a short year later in a bed of joy-filled tears yet death-like pain Into this wondrous world of many wonders one more wonder came That same woman's face was wrapped up In a raptured look of love and tenderness As she marveled at the soft and warm and cuddly boy-child feeding at her breastAnd she said "Hello, country bumpkin" "Fresh as frost out on the pumpkin" "I've seen some sights but, babe, you're somethin'" "Mamma loves her country bumpkin"Forty years of hard work later in a simple, quiet and peaceful country place The heavy hand of time had not erased The raptured wonder from the woman's face She was lying on her deathbed knowing fully well her race was nearly run But she softly smiled and looked into the sad eyes of her husband and her sonAnd she said "So long, country bumpkin" "The frost is gone now from on the pumpkin" "I've seen some sights and life's been somethin'" "See you later, country bumpkin"She said "So long, country bumpkin" "The frost is gone now from on the pumpkin" FADE "I've seen some sights and life's been somethin'"

Good comment: I think of the happy loving people in this song, and love the lyrics: by contrast, there is the opposite song - He Stopped Loving Her Today. Both great songs, but one of them (this one) is about people who decided to love other people, despite their faults, while the other classic describes what it is like to refuse to love anybody except the first choice. For his sake, I wish the dude in He Stopped Loving Her Today had walked into the Country Bumpkin's future wife's bar.
