Merle Haggard - Wake up

This is the only live clip I've seen of this terrific song (from the "The Way I Am" album). I saw him do this in concert in Worcester, Mass. soon after his mother died. He followed it with "Mother, queen of my heart", but he was unable to finish that one. It was chilling... It's amazing how deep Hag's catalogue is, with so many great songs that weren't singles.

I love this song and so did my mom! She would sing this song to her grandsons to wake them up in the morning for school or work. they still talk about it and laugh as they will always remember their grandma for this reason and her sense of humour. Thanks for the memories!

You know what it is as a country music fan since the 60's as a child. I've just come to the conclusion about whats changed in country music its the voice the old greats like Merle and George Charley Pride their voices were instruments you don't need a great singing voice nowadays to sing country music because they drowned it out by the instruments. Today's country music would pass for Rock in the 70's if you don't believe me? go listen to The Eagles Lying eyes or Take it to the limit any of those songs then play any modern country artist, I'll guarantee you the modern country song will sound more upbeat than the 70's rock.

Robert Reed Agreed. Songwriting's a big part of the problem too. Not so much that the songwriters aren't as good, I think it's more that what they're asked to do by the producers and labels is so doggone limited. "Girl, you are so hot, this is an awesome night, I just want to get in your pants here in this cornfield" probably covers about 50% of today's "country" tunes. "I'm so lucky, my life is great, and I'm so in love with my wife" maybe another 20%. "Shucks, I'm country through and through, and I drive a big ol' truck, and I love my momma and the little town I'm from" maybe another 20%. That's 90% of the tunes, right there. I mean, whatever else you can say about it, it's as boring as watching paint dry.... in winter.
