This is my absolute favorite song by Merle Haggard and I have NEVER heard it on the radio. I purchased an album that had Diana on it and if not for that album I would probably never yet have heard this beautiful song. I am a huge Merle Haggard fan and I was lucky enough to see him live in concert one time. My niece and I saw him at Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. We got to the Ryman fairly early and were seated in the second row of the balcony. The row in front of us was totally empty so there was nothing between us and the stage so we were delighted that it appeared we would have a clear shot of the show. Just as Haggard was being introduced, about five or six young men who looked like they were barely legal walked in and sat down in the empty row right in front of us. I say “barely legal” because they appeared to be maybe 21 or 22 years old and they walked in holding cups of beer and it looked like they had already had a few rounds before they even got there. I groaned a bit because I assumed they would be loud and obnoxious, possibly mocking Merle’s songs or laughing at him, and there would go any chance I might have of enjoying his singing. Merle went into “Mama’s Hungry Eyes” and VERY SOFTLY I could hear those young men singing with him. He started singing “Okie from Muskogee” and again they were singing every word as he sang it. This was the way it went through the entire concert. They sang every word with Merle and they would sometimes sing harmony to him and they had great voices. Not only did they not ruin the concert, they actually enhanced it. When the concert was over and we started to walk out I nudged one of the young men on the arm and asked him how guys so young were such huge fans of Merle Haggard. His response to me was, “We were raised right.” I left that concert having learned a bit of a lesson about not being so quick to judge people.

This song literally paints a picture in your head. It's written so carefully and uses just the right words that stick with a listener. Country music just doesn't do that anymore. And I'm not a basher of modern country, but nothing hits home like a good Haggard, Waylon, or Johnny Cash song. Eric Church is the only artist nowadays who keeps this style of songwriting alive.

I stopped watching Country Music Award Shows the year that Taylor Swift won I believe Entertainer of the Year. She undoubtedly is very talented but if she is country then I'm the Queen of England.

Diana It's been almost two years now since, since you've been gone Speaking of time you know mine's better In fact just another breath or two I'll be home By the way, what have you got planned tonight, Diana Would you consider lying in my arms I love you more than ever now, Diana I'm sure you're the reason I was born.....

I was talking to my older brother just last night about this song. I told him that I had NEVER heard it played on any radio station and it was not at all well known but to my way of thinking this is the most beautiful Haggard song ever. Maybe stations didn't play it because they thought it was too sad but I don't really see anything sad about a love that lasted all their lives and he is now looking forward to seeing her in another life. How can that be sad????

I've loved this song since I first saw him perform it in the mid 1970's watching a B&W TV in Amherst, Massachusetts on one of those Saturday night country music shows (like the Porter Wagoner Show?). I suppose it's always been on my mind and was one of many factors that led to me finding myself in Alaska within ten years. But, I've always cringed at "...we cut our life in the ponderosa pines..." To the best of my knowledge, ain't no such thing here in Alaska!
