Evan, if you buried the cattle watering trough in the ground it would accomplish two things. One, the sheep could drink from it. And two, it would be easier for the heater to keep it from freezing. And the extra bonus is - you don't need to add another circuit to the barn. Hurray!!!! Art & Melissa from Ohio

Evan, I have found that when you go to start ANY mechanical project: 1) Take LOTS of pictures, before doing anything. 2) Pressure wash/steam clean, going over it, at least twice thoroughly. 3) Take a quicker round of pictures, to identify cracks or breaks.. 4) Think through what you 'know' about the project, morning coffee is a great time. 5) Start disassembly, have at it. Following these simple steps, you will have the least, stop, go back do item 2, then restart the repair issues. I detest, where people just start in on taking apart dirty equipment, as they don't always clean things properly, before reassembly, never mind just after disassembly. Whereas if it's cleaned properly, at the start, you have a MUCH better chance of a long lived, successful rebuild. I have worked on mining equipment (4 brands), tractors (3 brands), forklifts, and track loaders, for work. Also worked on my own motorcycles (3 brands), pickup trucks and Jeeps. Best wishes from the far North..

Nice video Evan, remember farmers don't work by hours but by accomplishments. There never seems to be enough hours, satisfaction is in knowing what you got done was done well. Good Lord willing and the river doesn't rise tomorrow's another day. That does seem to be an exceptional amount of feed for the porkers, our customers have excellent results with hogs that are 6 months at harvest. Hogs will generally convert 3# of feed into 1# of gain, if your pigs are 50# when you get them and you want to harvest at 300# shouldn't take much more than 750# to get them there. Obviously there's a lot of variables but generally speaking. Have a great day keep up the good work.

Hi Evan, thank you for another interesting video! This time on the winterization of your farm! Isn’t it amazing how much more work cold weather makes for you both on the farm? The “daily chore time” seems to double. But at least now you have no more pigs to feed! Yea! The gate latch Houdini can be defeated by installing a self locking hook. You should be able to find them at TSC. I used them on my dairy farm to prevent my cows from escaping in the middle of the night. A good way to prevent your water hydrant from freezing. Is to always make sure that you leave one of the valves open on that two way splitter you have on the hydrant. This will insure the water will siphon back down the hydrant. Quick connects on hydrant ends makes fast work of draining the hoses out after each use. Thanks again and have a blessed weekend!

You are really getting to understand cows. From what I have seen, they can be regular Houdini's and are always so curious. Wonder if having some sort of cover over the electrical plugs outside would be useful. You know exactly where it is located and what opportunities the animals could have to mess around with them. Good fixes on the gate. My dad worked full time and farmed and it isn't easy, especially when the cow needs to be milked. He had to do it just before he left for work and when he got home. The tractor is changing and is going to come together. You are doing fine. Good luck with it.

Hey Evan, been watching a long time but haven’t commented. Thought I should share some info on feeding your pigs. To finish a commercial weaned pig to market weight, the benchmark is approx 700LB per hd. Another rule of thumb for a lower tech, hobby feeding scenario on pasture, you could use a factor of 3 ish LB of feed for 1 LB of gain. So, if you bought a feeder pig at 50 LBs and sold him at 300 LB (250 LB gain x 3 LB feed) you would feed 750 LB of feed for the whole period. You might have more feed waste using the troughs than you realize, which is driving your cost much higher.
