Gotta love how stuff you don't want to grow will thrive on solid rock and it laughs at any type of weed killer you try but the stuff you really want to grow dies if you just look at it cross ways.

Nice work. I think if you do that on a regular basis the grass will go away. Have you considered using a propane torch to kill off the grass? It might be preferable to the chemicals given the livestock you have.
@sunnyday56212 жыл бұрын
The same as the grass on your lawn does not go away when you cut it, this grass will not go away either. I can tell you from experience, that weeds love when you use a torch, the ash is excellent fertilizer. Chemicals and spraying is a pain, but with an established root base underneath, it is the only way to get rid of them. For some weeds, a 4%+ industrial vinegar will burn them out when applied heavily. But other weeds find the vinegar as good as a fertilizer. I buy it in a 35 gallon drum, and start my weed control from there.

I spray brine (I use the road salt sold at the big box store to make it) and that kills everything for about a season. Spray once may need a 2nd application in a week and one more before winter but no tearing fabric and spreading grass and weeds all over. It's also very cheap to make than that weed-kill stuff.

I used to put in gravel drives in and I always tilled up the drive then scraped it off, piled it up as the homeowners always wanted the topsoil for filling low spots, etc. But this was before the fabric was being used. Everybody always sprayed the edges to keep the grass down. I put 2.5 crusher run then 3/4 crushed concrete topping and the grass came thru that I just let it grow, best grass in my whole yard but you can park an 18 wheeler on it and it's never sunk in. Just mow it and now dust and I've bladed snow off in that area didn't bother it. Just keeps growing.

From experience a drive such as you have must have a crown. Trimming without using a water bio friendly herbicide first means regrowth whatever you do. Personally I learned long ago that maintaining a drive to the width of the vehicle traffic is in the end the most time friendly way. I have several miles of track to maintain. Horses for courses really. Excellent channel. God bless from the UK.

I cut the top soil off ours and put down fabric and then gravel but still have tons of weeds. It’s a never ending battle. Also I didn’t put down enough gravel so I can’t use rippers. Gonna have to piney up for more rock! Your drive looks great!
@ronaldlee23762 жыл бұрын
Do not beat your self up, grass/weeds always win out. Limestone breaks down (dust) sweetens the soil, this is why lime is put on ag. fields to sweeten soil & improve yields. I have fought your battle every year for more than 6 decades. I gain upper hand until the next shower then I slip back into 2nd place again. Same effect using ground control, just a chess game, but never give up !

Evan, 5 gallons water, 2 1/2 to 3 pounds of water softener salt, 2 cups of vinegar and 1/2 Cup cheap dish washing all mixed and put into sprayer. This will kill all vegetation to the root. be careful to not get any salt grains into sprayer as it might clog sprayer. wait at least on day for water to absorb salt because water will only absorb so much salt. I used this mix on my stone driveway and this really works. Store bought mixes are only goof for 3 to 6 months. This works forever. This mixture will make 100 gallons of killer for about $12.00. Good luck, THIS WORKS, TRUST ME.

Evan, it is Mothers Natures way to reclaim the land as she wants it. All we can do is prolong it to some extent. The ripper did OK. You are on a farm not trying to get on the front cover of Home and Garden. It looks fine. Go over it once a year. If you Add 4 inches of gravel, you will still get grass. Good video
@joebarrett98302 жыл бұрын
It's a little late now, but when installing a new driveway you should take it down to a hard surface, clay if you have it in your area. I seldom use the papers, it's more of a hassle than anything. Once it's cut in down to clay or hard surface, then put the #2s down for the base layer. I suggest driving on it for roughly a year to really pack it in, but a couple months if driven on regularly will work just fine also. Then you put like a #53 crushed stone as a middle layer or if you don't want to put a lot of money into a driveway you can top off with the top layer of #73. But after the middle layer (53s) is down you drive on it and pack it down as well. A good rain will also help lock in the stone. Then you put the final top layer on which can be #73s which also has dust or #10s which doesn't have dust and doesn't lock in as well. You should have roughly about 6-8" from the ground to the top of the driveway. This is how it should be done. Many of my customers want the corners cut and only want about 4" so they stop at the middle layer stage with either the #53s or the #73s. I can understand, it's rather expensive, but to do it right, you would never hit the road fabric or the base layer of #2s when grading it. Every driveway will grow grass and weeds. It's a course surface and catches all the seeds as they are blown or thrown into the air when mowing. It's just the nature of the beast. A good vegetation killer will solve this if you hit is 3-4 times a year before it gets out of control. I would suggest that between your grading times, you should spray it. About a month after grading, you should spray it to kill off things starting to grow in the driveway.

Evan, have you ever tried salt as a weed killer ? Get yourself a 50# bag of salt swimming pool salt is pretty cheap, or you should be able to get road salt where you are, dissolve a pound in a bucket of hot water and spread liberally on weeds. It will also stop new weeds from growing. You can also spread it on the rest of the driveway. Do not spread near trees. This is a semi-permanent method of killing unwanted growth.

I would love to have a land plane and soil pulverizer but I have a box blade and grader blade I use on the parking lot where I work I start out with the box blade and rippers to loosen up the rock then finish with grader blade turned around backwards and run over it pretty fast it doesn't pick up a lot of the rock but it breaks up the dirt clods and grass then after a rain it looks pretty good
@howdyshaun61392 жыл бұрын
Maybe get a burner torch and torch the edges, then a few days later, do the landplane. The roots will have died, slowing the regrowth, and the plant matter will break up into small pieces with the landplane a few days later.

Evan - Wrong tool. Spray the weeds with glyphosate every couple of months. I buy "compare-n-save" 41% concentrate. One gallon is $58 on Amazon. You mix 1-1/2 oz per gallon so it lasts for a year or two. I find it is best not to tear into the gravel much with a ripper.
