Banging on the wall was worth trying! Pretty sure that you saw how the tractor destoyed the ground! Removing that first column of bricks, probably, allowed the wall to pop free!! Evan is smart, what he has accomplished on the farm proves that without a doubt! You, however, have a long way to go to be a smart, caring, talented, and mature individual!!

If you took some roof or floor jacks and lifted up the roof on one section at a time raise it about 1/2 in cut the seal plate out and install the new one attach it and then lower the roof back to where it was and then nail the studs back into place and then move on to the next section.

So glad you didn’t get broken from falling down stairs. Maybe think about using the treated 2x6’s for new sill plates. The lumber less than 10 - 12’ length could be useful for cross bracing or for other projects around the farm. A lot of projects like compost bins, chicken tractors, brooder, and etc don’t require 10ft long boards for framing the end sides. Price of lumber is outrageous again, save it all and reuse it! Will save you a lot of $$$.

A good place to store some of that old lumber, even if it's not the full 10'-ers that you've got in mind for your projects, is up above the rafters in the top section of your barn. Keeps it off the ground and out of the way.

@01glennie2 жыл бұрын
You have done well with this one Evan, use some of that timber to tie your vertical barn timbers together, giving it diagonal strapping to support it against the winds before you place the outside timbers or barn boards on. As for those blocks you have over, just place them on the floor in front of the new opening that way you use it as hardcore before buying tones of the road stone to build up to the concrete base of the barn.

Put a temporary support system under the roof after it is jacked up a couple of inches. That will allow you to remove those footer boards and replace them with some of those removed from the floor boards that you removed from inside the addition.

Evan: You might consider a double sill with the PT floor joist wood. Then you can cut 1 1/2 inches off the bottom of the studs back into solid wood. I would also add blocking to stiffen the wall. the old guy Bert

The grapple worked better than I thought. Good thing 'cause I could see a jackhammer in your future. It was acting like a lever applying force on the bottom blocks. I think all that concrete will make a good base for your ramp. Also, that tree has to go. And poor Rebecca - I bet she had a heart attack when you fell down the stairs. You - no problem. It is good to be young. I got slammed to the concrete floor a few years ago and my hip was never the same.

Not too bright there Slick.🙄 🙂✌❤ Tomorrow is a new day.🤞 If you want to R&R the sillplate do it before you remove the floor joists. You can jack the roof with a couple bottle jacks from the existing floor/framing and cut your replacements sills from the old pressure treated joists.👍 You seem to be working in reverse order.🤷
@theBakersonafewacres2 жыл бұрын
Brace up the ceiling joists and rafters like you did for the beam, use a metal sawzall blade to cut the nails that go through the bottom plate and into the stud, and the anchors that attach it to the block wall, cut away chunks of that rotten sill plate and replace. Bolt it back down with wedge bolts..aka redheads.

I wasn't one of those bugging you about the wood, but I am glad to hear you plan to up-cycle it. I did notice it and I will admit I would be too cheap to toss it, especially if you think some of it was milled from trees from the property. I might be a little careful about where you use the older treated stuff. If I recall, that was done with arsenic (??), but I could be wrong. I could see those blocks coming in handy for fill, too. Sounds like you have a need and it will save you on material you will have to have brought in. I give you two credit for your patience with the barn projects. My OCD would have had me painting that quite awhile ago. Lol. Take care and Happy New Year!

Man, I'm sore just watching you swing that mallet! What a workout. Now that trees are dormant for the winter, it would be a good time to relocate that one that seems to always be in the way across from that opening. I can relate to the animals always getting in the way. They are all always so curious when ever a project is in the works. My old German Shepard always wanted to be part of the work. I think If it could work a tool, it wouldn't hesitate! haha ... Some days its frustrating that they keep getting in the way. Other days its just adorable. I sure miss my little buddy now though.

I was surprised there was no rebar tying the stem wall to the footer. You might want to add some brackets to the remaining walls. Love those turkeys!🤣
@johnsadler86372 жыл бұрын
Well, my suggestion of filling the holes in the wall appears to have been followed about 50-60 years ago! When you hit that and the sledge just bounced off, I was afraid there was rebar in there too! I had already decided I’d recommend you rent a saw big enough to meet in the middle - that’s just too tough. However, noticing that set of cracks 2-4’ to the right of your right-hand cuts, I’m afraid you might take out more than you want when you get into that. Using a saw big enough will protect against tearing up the section under your other column. At the very least, cut the mortar course between the wall and foundation. I like the other suggestions about using the wall blocks as a base for your gravel ramp. Would save a load of rock probably.
