Cattle can be pushy and playful, but that is dangerous. They need ro know that the humans who feed them are to be respected. Just bop her on the nose when she gets rambunctious. It won't hurt her, but it will get her to back away when misbehaving. Watch how cows tell each other who is boss. They are not gentle. Love your videos.

60 years experience with cows. Put the jersey with the steers. Pullet eggs are the best. Eat them!
@jwszewczyk Жыл бұрын
Your heifer needs a friend to play with. We had one that got very food aggressive until she went at it with the bull and got pushed back into place. If one comes at you defend yourself with a sharp hit to the nose or eyes and get away. In bad situations hit them with your hat and drop the hat. They'll fight your hat while you get away. Your eggs will get bigger with maturity. My neighbor had a chicken that laid pingpong ball eggs forever.

I would like to suggest that instead of using the expensive mineral fly spray. I use either vegetable oil corn oil or something to that effect. Then go to the local feed store get some permethrin mix it into the corn oil try that on the cattle it will last three times longer and what you're using and it's a whole lot cheaper.
@richardhoover9837 Жыл бұрын
I noticed that you had quite the mud hole in front of the water tank for steers. I live on Kansas where gravel is abundant. I normally put down 3 inch rock in a mud hole like that. Wait a week or so and then put gravel screenings over. It sets up like cement and you never have any more problems.

It’s not the garlic; she’s a large animal, not a pet. If you haven’t already done so; the beef quality assurance trainings would be good for you, before you get yourself injured. The steers won’t hurt her. She’ll be fine

When we were raising Jerseys, we bred them around 15 months, so they would calve as a 2 year old. Myah probably is already coming into heat once a month. When that happens they will be very aggressive and even try to ride you.

One of my neighbors has Longhorns and I tell you what I would be skittish around them. We were up in Georgia at a families property and they had black Angus and I was walking up to an old school bus and as soon as the farmer got closer they all charged over to him for their feeding and I thought I was a goner.

Did you say persimmon area (new spot for the goats)? Do you like persimmons? Those are native trees that are definitely worth saving. If it was my decision I'd pick out the best of the best and put 5' tall wire cages around the persimmon trees. Deer will go crazy for "ripened on the tree" persimmons. More than 45 butterfly and moth species, including the Luna moth, lay their eggs on persimmon trees. In addition to deer, species like opossum, quail, squirrel, wild turkey and others have been known to consume the fruit. 😊

We had some cows and a bull that we raised from bottle calves for the kids when they were in 4h and they got really pushy too. I had the bull, named Prince, that would pick me up with his head, so I had to put some boundaries on him too. The one good thing that came out of him being so tame was, when he got a cut between his hoof, we kept him pinned in the hold and had to doctor it with iodine and bag balm to keep the flies off. Good luck with the search for a friend for Maya, hopefully your search will yield success. Thanks for sharing, I hope you both have a nice evening!

When kept pigs, made 4 pens about 1/4 acre each, main item a mud wallow, had to cart clay in from a dam wall, just the amusement value watching them well worth it. Just a mention, was using molasses to mix in Kikuyu grass seed with, then putting this on hay when feeding, noticed an increase of biting flies/insects, stopped the molasses, decrease in biting. Copper and sheep, used to make a stock lick had 2kg of copper sulphate in 25kg of dolomite, plus other minerals, dolomite counters copper toxicity. Don’t use it anymore, as animals no longer need it, can put minerals out and will be there for a year, occasionally drop a mineral block, without molasses or urea, as a test.

I’ve always found that a good dairy steer makes for good company for other animals. I have a Holstein steer year round and although he may be super sized, he’s always the calmer than any cow or heifer. About a 3 or 4 year old stay steer will fit your bill.

Wondering if you will have Mia tested for what milk she will produce? Casein A2 hopefully or Casein A1. A2 is better for human consumption they have discovered. Holsteins produce Casein A1. She sure is a beautiful Jersey. Thanks for sharing your chores with us. Best wishes, Deb

You can make your own rub using something concentrated, like permethrin sfr, and mixing it with a carrier oil. Probably best to use mineral oil. But I have used a mixture of diesel fuel and used hydraulic oil with good success. They even make a product called a cattle curtain that you can hang in an area where they pass through to get feed, water or mineral a few times daily to apply it via wicking strips that hang down.

I've been around jerseys for decades, as some others have suggested she might be coming in heat- and she should have some bovine company. If that does not stop that aggression you might have to keep something on hand to swat her with that might sting a little but not hurt her- that is not really normal behavior. I hope a companion will calm her down.

Young cows are just like puppies, only a lot bigger. They show love by head butting and rubbing up against you. It can be a bit scary because they can hurt you because of there size and strength. Did you notice that your cow obeyed you when you told her to stop? She wants to comply but she wants your attention too. Just be careful and let her be a cow. She will never attack you, but watch out when she is behind you. She could knock you down. Another thing... after having lived on a dairy farm, I can tell you she will be much different with another cow to keep her company. Cows are herd animals and they have very nice family instincts.
