Putting this in the top comment for visibility. SLE aka lupus is entirely or almost entirely preventable in dogs by administering a vaccine. Dogs are the only animal that have a vaccine for SLE. As a MD I know humans do not and the diagnoses and treatment of SLE is incredibly difficult & takes an incredibly long duration. Meanwhile the symptoms can be as you saw quite horrific. This also could’ve been avoided by having your dog on a preventative medication like Simparica Trio which kills ticks, fleas, & heartworm. If you live in an area where lupus is endemic due to fleas then you should take these measures to keep your dogs healthy. You can find out if you live in an endemic area by checking Google for the cdc map. I own no stock etc in any of this I just want to provide helpful information to pet parents!

Having an undiagnosed illness is so frustrating and leaves you feeling helpless. Even if its not curable, just knowing what is wrong can be a blessing. I’m dealing with this regarding a human, I can’t imagine how difficult it would be with an animal. Thank goodness they discovered the problem and can medicate Wiley. Kudos to his parents for their loving care.❤

I'm glad they found out what the problem was. Hopefully, the meds will give your fur baby back some quality of life. It's heartbreaking to see anybody in pain like that! Also, your man is a keeper! Oh man, I didn't know dogs could even get Lupus. Poor baby. Good thing he has such loving and attentive parents who can afford to take care of him as best they can, and who go the extra mile to make him happy.

Yes but I’ll tell you as an MD dogs are also the only species of that have a working preventative vaccine against SLE known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus. Therefore if you live in an area where it’s endemic, due to ticks, or are traveling to an area where it’s endemic get your dog vaccinated & they won’t have to endure the symptoms of the disease nor the management. It’s a terrible disease in humans and no vaccine exists for us. I wish Dodo had put this information in the video to spread awareness!

The love that Sally and Dusty have for Wiley is fantastic. In 2019 I had a big change in my life. I sold my home, bought an RV and moved from GA to AZ. My Beautiful girl Boo, that I had for 9½ years made the move with me. We had only been there 2 months. Boo went to stand up and had difficulty. I thought she had strained a muscle. The vet said he thought it was more neurological and sent me to a specialist. Some of you might think this is extreme, but yes, I paid for Boo to have an MRI. Unfortunately my Boo didn't make it because the MRI revealed that the illness affected her brain stem. I'm thankful to God, that I was in a position to have the MRI done.

Wiley wishing you many years of quality of life. Being chronically ill is tough especially when you are a pup. My two had heart disease Lyme cancer, and my boy had painful bone disease from his Lyme. Managing their meds, keeping our appointments straight etc All was worth it. They were both around 11.5 when they crossed over. Wiley have fun with Mom and Dad. Enjoy the good loving care.

OMG, those opening cries were heartbreaking. Poor sweet boi. Must be absolutely gut-wrenching for his parents (particularly in the beginning when they had no idea what was wrong) seeing him like that & being unable to fix it. I had a girl, Juneau, in CA. for many years- she looked like Wylie. She was interested in everything. She was bit by a beaver when we, then, were fishing. I watched the beaver float down then Juneau. She was so swollen and in pain. It is SOOOOO hard to see any suffering in your pets. They are family. While I'm happy u got a diagnosis, I'm sorry it took longer to figure it out.
