This guy is correct that he needs a terminal degree in the humanities (PhD, MFA, etc) for a tenure track position, but he’s grossly understating how bad the academic job market is for the humanities. This guy is very, very, very unlikely to get a tenure track job in today’s world (and they don’t pay $120-130k in the humanities). * I’m a tenured prof in the humanities with 20 years experience. Everyone knows that certain things in the states are just stupidly expensive (like education) but then there are things you don't even consider like IVF. I realized I didn't know how much IVF costs in my home country and just found out the first THREE rounds are completely covered by basic insurance (insurance everyone has and costs around 120 EUR a month). I was previously thinking about moving to the States but these videos are complelely scaring me out of that idea. Living in the EU is a blessing in so many ways.

Unfortunately everything comes at a cost. You guys dont have freedom of speech like we do. Your tax burden is much higher. The type of cars you can own are restricted. You dont have the right to defend yourselves. Basically your government is much bigger and more intrusive and restrictive. Americans as a whole dont trust the government and because of that we have more freedoms but that also comes at a cost. You are financially responsible for more here and you have farther to fall before you hit any gov safety net. Honestly it all comes down to how much you want the government in your life and your wallet.

@@Oksobasically2 Buddy, you're delusional. Our taxes are a bit higher, not by a lot, and you get much more for them. Yes, looking at countries like Sweden or Denmark, we can say it's bigger by a land slide. However, the quality of free healthcare and social security has also risen astronomically. The type of cars we can own are restricted ? Who the hell told you that? They are only restricted by our roads. You are free to buy a hammer if that's what you want, you will just have to pay more fees because it burns much more fuel and pollutes the city for everyone else. Also, people will just laugh at you and think you have a small pp(can't use the other word cause your free speach google will shadow ban this), but there is no restriction. Free speech ? You're right about that, we don't have one and I don't agree with that. When people are not allowed to own guns, you don't need a gun. If I was living in America, I would 100% get a gun in today's world. Fortunately, here I don't have to. Basically, your government is much bigger and more intrusive and restrictive. I'm sorry what ? Is it our governments or yours that is listening to everyone and invading their privacy? On the outside, it may seem like in Europe the government likes to hold more control, but here there is nothing going on in the background. Compare that to your IRS, which knows when you use the bathroom at work to take a shit and whether you are allowed to deduct it from your taxes. You have higher salaries and higher purchasing power, but apart from that, there is nothing to be envious of.

Your answer just shows that you have never lived in any EU country. Maybe this "freedom of speech" thing would have been true 20 years ago. Honestly, I feel like if you go out on the street in the US and you say that all this transgender stuff is just bull**it and that you don't agree with removing "he/she" from texts or something like that, you would probably get burned at the stake for it. I couldn't imagine how disappointing it is to not conceive after each session with it being so costly. Best wishes to this couple.

I was a GIFT (gamete intrafallopian transfer) baby born 1993, and I find it interesting that GIFT and ZIFT procedures are rarely done anymore compared to IVF. GIFT/ZIFT is up to *50%* more effective. The common complaints are that it requires laparoscopy, and that if it does work, you don't know as much about the developing embryo at the start. But that seems like a risk a lot of people would be willing to take, for 50% more effective. My guess is it's additional liability for the hospitals/clinics.

I noticed this while in the US military and also as a civilian. In the US military men who are single can get viagra (it was last I checked a roughly 35 MILLION USD/Year cost to the US military) for free but women with infertility issues are told it is 'G*d's will' and risk imprisonment for taking time off to get urgently-needed (as time is critical, it cannot wait for women as we have a biological clock) infertility treatment.

If I'm saving $500/month into VOO for a nephew with the aim to give him $150-250k when he turns 18, what constraints are there on gifting the money? I don't know if he'll use it to pay for housing during education, school supplies, tuition or just living expenses for four to six years... Will I or him need to submit receipts to the IRS for every charge against the 529 account? Or can I simply transfer the lump sum to his account when he's 18 and that's that? I'm currently just saving it into a regular taxable account because I want to be able to give it to him free of any constraints. He will likely have education paid for by scholarships, so I'm envisioning he should use the money to invest in real estate early (be the landlord for other students!!), but... does 529 prevent that kind of freedom?

Romania is quite similar to what you're describing. If you have a full time employment contract the employer has to have you contribute to social security (public pension) and also a private pension (like an investment-based pension fund similar to the American 401k). I'm sure there are loopholes there too based on company size or various types of employment, but the fact that so many employers in the US can get away with not offering 401k (and the fact that you supposedly cannot make a living off of your social security pension alone) is still mind-boggling to me.

Feels refreshing to see two mature, (semi)responsible adults on this channel for the first time in what feels like a long time. As a fellow Eastern European I get the pressure behind the "successful at all costs" kind of lifestyle they're looking at (family, advanced degrees, businesses, etc.) but as an American and a finance person time value of money is sooooo much more valuable. Also one thing to point out is that sometimes business taxes are levied in advance, a kind of estimate for the year, which then get trued up at the end of the year or even after tax season as mentioned, and it's hard to make a good profit to live off of unless you have a side gig (i.e. agriculture), tax evade (based balkan strategy), rely a bit on family (most live with parents well into their late 20s even 30s if they don't go away to college and even then they tend to come back, but homeownership is high and land gets passed down from generation to generation) or are a sole proprietor with very low overhead due to social benefit taxes being levied by the government (but you do get mostly free healthcare). Interesting why they didn't stay back to do the IVF in Europe, I know Italy has some good doctors in the public hospitals overall. Salaries are bad and taxed to all hell but at least quality of life is pretty good. Honestly if they saved up like 500k in the next 20 years they could retire in Eastern Europe and live off of that for years, assuming they inherit a house.

Young me decided to major in chemical engineering instead of chemistry or biology because the engineering degree would set me aside from other applicants, but more importantly if I changed my mind I’d be able to get a job that paid more than minimum wage. My senior year came and I was so exhausted of being being in school and working multiple jobs and the thought of another 8 years to make as much as a dish washer (in residency) sounded miserable. So I went into industry. My first job paid $72k and within 5 years I was making $130k a year (without bonuses). Had I gone to medical school I’d still be in school, residency making next to nothing while working awful hours. Let’s not forget the 6 figure student loan debt. Whether the lifestyle and work of a doctor is worth it is a different question - as far as the money aspect goes, even non specialty doctors in America make an astronomical amount after getting established.

Caleb was torn on them being "credit card people", they are a unique breed that pursuing life dreams override any concern for debt. ROI is not there-- personal pursuit of dreams is overly weighted. Our typical "not a credit card person" cannibalizes the instant gratification for the 5-year plan. For this couple, it's like don't let the 5-year dreams cannibalize 25-year reality (retirement).

Agreed. The question they needed to be confronted with and truth they needed to be told is “what is your highest life priority, and you MUST place them in order and everything that isn’t at the top gets cut.” IVF is going to cost them years in later retirement. Maybe that’s okay with them. His non-career is costing them financial security now and decades in retirement later. Flying to weddings and spending on cleaning services can’t coexist with a goal of financial stability. It’s simply time for them to choose what’s important and go that direction.
