In this video we continue our journey into the lore of the God of war series. This was a non stop thrill ride as we discover an older yet wiser Kratos. Aside from the visuals my wife and I were completely blown away story telling and voice acting of each character. Santa monica studios truly created a masterpiece with this game. It was unreal playing through the game for the first time realizing you were going to get the blades of chaos. You have to understand by this point most players assumed the blades weren’t going to be in the game. The axe was fully fleshed out. The whole sequence sent chills down my spine.

There were only 2 ways to properly retire from the spartan army, die in combat at around age 30 or survive until you hit 60 when you were free to retire. Hearing that the elderly go to Hel here is the closest we'll ever get to a flabbergasted Kratos.

Probably the best moment in the game is when he goes back to get his blades. So much pain, so much trauma, and so much inner hate and rage. You felt it all. But something else you realize is that its Kratos' first step at confronting his own past. In order to properly heal from it, which he clearly has not done yet, he would've had to do this at some point. I also understand why Kratos doesn't want to tell Atreus the truth. I mean Atreus still needs to know, but from Kratos' perspective I can understand why he would want to avoid it. But we'll get into that later.

Kratos is afraid of the truth and of hurting Atreus. His family's history of father-son relationships is not great, so the tension keeps bubbling up now and again.

Some more mythology geekitude- there was a reference to Nanna (when Brok proclaims "Sweet Nanna's Nethers!" when he sees the Blades Of Chaos for the first time); in Norse mythology, Nanna was Baldur's wife. Their son, Forseti, was regarded as the god of Law/ Justice. And again, the way Baldur is portrayed in this game is the absolute polar opposite of how he's portrayed in "traditional" Norse tales, where he was regarded of the god of Lighty/ Beauty. That's what is so amazing about this franchise (and the games in the Norselands in particular), how they turn the entire mythology on its head and show EVERYTHING in a different perspective.

the answer to some of the questions you guys have sometimes is just video game design. Like why is there a portal at their house? So players don't have to run back to Tyr's Temple from the beginning of the game

The isn't as simple as Kratos telling the truth fixing things. That Spartan rage that Atreus got from Kratos, is in Kratos' mind a curse. On top of that the fact Faye(Atrues' mother)(I suggest you research Freya's and Faye's family tree in Norse Mythos) has a secret herself even though she is dead. Which that secret can cause even more complications when merged with Kratos' history. Big kicker Kratos knows the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Faye, so he knows that her secrets also will effect their son.

In this case, i would say that lying is definitely less complicated than the truth that kratos fears most: that his son will grow up to hate and eventually kill him, like he did with zeus, and zeus did with Cronus, and cronus did with Ouranos. The father/son dynamic in greek mythology is pretty bleak, almost always ends in tragedy

I think they don't necessarily mean that he has to keep lying, or lies are not complicated. From what I got there it's more like Kratos is concerned about how the truth would come across to his son. Certain things you can express in words but they don't necessarily bring across the motivation, emotions and mind state the person was in. There are almost like moving parts to the truth and it's not always easy to show especially to a kid his age

That whole thing about dying in glorious battle, is one of the biggest reasons why vikings were so terrifying on the battlefield. Not only do they not care if they get killed, they were looking forward to it. Hell, to this day, there's still something primally intimidating about a beefy, tatted up dude with braided hair and full braided beard.

Mythology Geek Moment- the realm of Helheim here is usually just referred to as Hel in Norse mythology. It's also the name of the demi-goddess who watches over the dead. She's described as a witch who is white on one half of her body, and black on the other. Without giving away any spoilers, she's also Jormungandr's sister. (I don't really follow the Thor Marvel movies, so I'm not sure if she's represented there or not). These reactions are so awesome. :)

That giant bird is prominent in norse mythology, but it's not meant to be in helheim in mythology. In this franchise it's meant to be the ruler of helheim and the only other speaker of the giant language. However in norse mythology: the ruler of helheim is one of loki's children Hela who is also vital in ragnarok once it arrives. That eagle is meant to fly and live at the top of the world tree (The tree that holds all the nine realms together and if that tree is destroyed, the nine realms are screwed. The Giant eagle (It has a name but I don't want to butcher its name though im sure I'll edit later or someone will lust the name.) also is known to have beef with the dragon niddhog who keeps the roots of the world tree as they both talk shit about each other and have a magic squirrel Ratatoskr climb up and down the tree sending the insults to each other

(A lot of this is in optional dialogue and supplemental material like the books, so don't worry about spoilers here) The game has a lot of nuance that is easily missed, so for the sake of filling in some gaps: Magni is (well, was) a huge daddy's boy. He's basically been propped up as the second coming of Thor and wants more than anything to make him proud and prove himself worthy. His line "the Allfather demands it" shows his zealous dedication to the role of dutiful soldier to that end. He takes the lead with Modi in order to not be dragged down. Modi, in response to this, is a walking inferiority complex. Forever second-rate, being compared to his brother and seeing the attention he gets damaged him deeply, and he now picks on those weaker than him to compensate, taking a sadistic pleasure in it. The brothers are both a bit more than 110 years old (their uncle Baldur is 144, and their father Thor is at least several hundred years old). They also have an often forgotten sister, revealed in some dialogue before you fight the brothers. They operate as a kind of dark reflection of Atreus. They are what he could have been if Kratos and Faye didn't raise him with love and fairness, though Atreus himself doesn't see it. He feels the need to "prove himself" (why he got so upset in the beginning of the game after they fought the Troll) and absolutely despises showing any weakness (like Magni and Modi respectively) . Kratos and Mimir see this and try to massage his ego, to his detriment in my opinion. There's a lot to talk about regarding this episode, but it gets a bit too far into spoiler territory so I'll leave it here.

This was my favorite scene of the game. When I first played this, I automatically put the pieces together, when Kratos had no choice but to go to Freya and he thought about Athena, the next minute. Just goes to show that Kratos wouldn't have had any problems with The Greek Gods and would have continued working with them, if they never lied or backstabbed him, when Kratos was simply raised upon honor. Freya was officially the first God/Goddess to help him out in a crisis situation. Whereas the Greek Gods would have just let Atreus died in a heartbeat💯

Here's the things i need to mention: Mimir's eyes have bifrost crystals in them so he could travel much easier. Tyr and mimir did so much traveling they thought crystals in his eyes would be easier to travel the realms. In fact it's why mimir has one eye right now. Second, Magni and modi were supposed to outlive ragnarok once thor dies to the world serpent battle (in mythology im refrencing) abd replace thor as the gods of thunder and sharing the hammer. So having magni die: Thats not good. Next regarding the thunderstorm, it means two things, one demonstrating kratos having multiple negative emotions fight him at his lowest moment leaving his inner demons (Athena) to torment him on his sins. The other regards thor as you will understand later on. That's thors fury being felt through the realms with the red being blood through the clouds. Finally if you're curious why kratos still has the blades despite all that they mean to him, he's cursed to always have them. Regardless of how he tries to get rid of them, they pop up next to him the next day. So he buries them hoping to never need them.

The red storm that happens when atreus gets sick isnt actually thor. Its the norse realm/world reacting to atreus nearly dying. Gods dying is a very unnatual thing.(despite how much it happens in this series) When a god dies a piece of the world/realm dies with them. Its the very thing that destroyed the greek realm. As kratos killed all the gods in GOW 3 it left Greece in chaos and destruction. So as atreus was so close to death, the norse realm was reacting to the potential death of a god.

the theory goes that when the storm happened it might have been something to do with Atreus, as the storm only happened after he fell too ill, some believe its the case of some of Atreus latient storm like abilities being passed down from zeus, others believe that it might be the case of some time travel stuff with two Atreus's running around an adult and a child. and some believe it was the case of a significant character/god in the case with Atreus, dying too early that it threw things out of whack. (I don't wanna say too much otherwise you might be spoiled on the story.)

It was said in the God of War comic (between the ending of God of War 3 and before God of War 2018) that Kratos literally tried to throw away the Blades of Chaos for good but it keeps coming back after he wakes up. He also once tried to stay awake for days so he would be able to stop the Blades from coming back to him, but he ended up passing out and wakes up with the Blades in front of him. Somehow the Blades of Chaos was the only Greek weapon that still functions even after it's land of origin were already destroyed (you can also notice that, if you can still recall Kratos' final fight with Zeus, all his weapons were destroyed except for the Blades of Chaos. Kratos just choose to use his fists against Zeus)
