The best 40k books you could ever read when you're starting to learn are the Eisenhorn books (Xenos, Malleus, Hereticus) by Dan Abnett. The books follow Inquisitor Eisenhorn and give you a real good insight into how all the different parts of the Imperium work with (and against) each other. They are set a couple of hundred years before the current timeline but they give you a solid foundation into 40k.

This is awesome! I love seeing people getting into the lore bc it's fascinating. At first seems super outlandish but the deeper you go, it starts to make sense, at least inside this universe. The idea of "Innocence proves nothing" is that in the 40k universe, you don't have to have malicious intent to be dangerous. You could be a latent psyker, for example, who has no intention of harming anyone, but you can't control your powers very well and suddenly you get possessed by demons. In that way, for an Inquisitor it doesn't matter that you had no purposeful intention to cause damage, you're still a danger and have to be dealt with.

Temple assassins absolutely dominate Space Marines. Space Marines are badasses compared to normal humans, but in the grand scheme of the Imperium they're not even close to the top dogs. Losing to a Temple assassin is hardly shameful though, one of them literally killed a Primarch.

Lot of the pre unknown history of Warhammer is pretty much unofficial events of dune books,least the ones written herbert ,Emperor may in fact be Unofficial a character that appears in Herbert's final dune book,lot of our history and dune history is lost or legend by the time of horus heresy...not to mention the dates are likely off ,ie more time has actually pasted ,events of 40k maybe closer to 70k then 40kdates were corrected

people already went in the specifics of space marine armor, but to put it more simply: standard space marine armor is equivalent to that of a light tank. so yeah, fairly unaffected by small arms fire. there are even stronger variants of it, which are the equivalent of an MBT... or more, they make the person inside basically invincible... if it werent for the fact that so many weapons in the 40k universe are absurdly powerful. 5:48 also if you didnt know by now, the bolt guns in 40k shoot miniature rocket-propelled grenades, that are meant to explode inside a target, highly effective against flesh and light armor. 8:45 in some space marine chapters, the higher ranking marines have different helmet colors and other markings, to be more easily identifiable (helps on the tabletop too). the beaky helmet of the guy in the back also implies hes an old veteran, as that armor pattern isnt standard anymore and hasnt been for a long time (though the Rave Guard still often use a similar design). "where is this guy" as others already said, no one knows. see, one of the "neat" things about 40k is that it also dips its toes into cosmic horror and body horror at times. my personal thinking is that those orbs were remnants of some unknown alien race and he dragged the marines to its home planet... somewhere. because, as bricky said, "this rifle killed 99% of the alien populations", the implications of that being that there are alien populations out there who too tough and strong, it being too costly to defeat them, or simply live in relative hiding. one example is a race that could shoot some form of bio-lasers that went through marine armor like a hot knife through butter. also amazon is creating 2 warhammer 40k shows currently, one animated one and a liveaction one (pretty sure) directed by Henry Cavill, who is a huge 40k fan. there are rumors that things arent going well because of creative differences, but they are just utterly unsubstantiated rumors. also, hey, not all shows on streaming services are crap. Invincible is pretty good (though season 2 took a while to get interesting), as is Arcane.

12:29 from what i know - and i might be wrong - the webway, i.e. the thing eldar use, has always been kinda there, but the eldar discovered how to use it. i seem to recall reading about some minor alien race using it too. big E planned to use it for humanity too, so anyone can access it, under the right circumstances. if i had to come up with a theory its that the eldar might've learned about the webway from the Old Ones, their creators. also to remember is that, in the very beginning, the warp used to be a lot less dangerous to traverse. another thing is that the necrons do use FTL travel, because they are incredibly technologically advanced, they dont need to use the warp (though they could, since they have no souls, they wouldnt attract demons). lastly, to just make sure there isnt any confusion: the astronomicon isnt needed for warp travel. its needed to navigate once you are inside the warp. 18:44 if you wonder about cadia, i recommend watching "Battlefleet Gothic 2 Fall of Cadia" on a channel called Veda Ra. that should give you a decent insight (and by decent i mean its less than 10% of what was going on, but its a good starting point). as for the guard... well, they are regular men and women... mostly. some are braver then others, officers and commisars are given special training and heavy indoctrination, making them at times as unshakable as any space marine... or even surpassing space marines at times. 25:50 someone already mentioned that all space marines can eat pieces of their foe to learn from them, due to one of their organs, so i will just throw out this random trivia bit: space marines also have an organ that allows them to produce acid spit. for some legions this organ is basically inert, but every now and again it will come up in books. 29:20 bricky actually doesnt explain it quite right (to my knowledge). the mechanicus believes in the emperor as the physical manifestation of the machine spirit, called the omnissiah (similar to jesus being the messiah). they do so because he (used his ancient knowledge of machines from the golden age of humanity and) performed "miracles" on and with machines. the ecclesiarchy, i.e. the church of the emperor, begrudgingly accepts that, because the mechanicus builds their stuff and has the treaty signed by big E himself, but they do hate them. also of note is that there is a sub-set of mechanicus who believe the human body is the most perfect machine and highest good and try to keep it preserved as well as possible, so they dont replace their body parts willy nilly. but you rarely hear about them, because thats boring. should've ran 2min more, when he changes to the next faction, but its fine. hope you enjoy your journey into this fandom!
