"He's got something to prove, he's got nothing to lose. [...] What is it like in his shoes." Burr struggles with the fact that he comes from an influential family and he doesn't want to dishonor the legacy of that family. Hamilton came from nothing and had no such reservations. Burr is jealous of the fact that Hamilton can take risks that he (Burr) could never dream of taking because it could destroy everything his parents left for him.
@GodofWarJCD3 жыл бұрын
The best part about this song is that when listening to the album, all you hear is jealousy. While seeing the performance and Burr’s face, you get a sense that he is jealous but also admires Hamilton. Because like you said, Hamilton is doing things in ways Burr could/would not do. Side not, this song(after many times repeating the album) made me like Burr 😅
@disableddragonborn Жыл бұрын
@@GodofWarJCD I never heard it as envy, at least not envy in terms of Alex having something Burr wants, but freedom from pressure to not fail your family as the only one left is definitely something that would make sense to contemplate.

"If there's a reason I'm still alive when everyone who loves me has died, I'm willing to wait for it." That hits me hard every time

I actually had my senior yearbook quote be "I am the one thing in life I can control. I am inimitable, I am an original." For basically my whole life, I had no control of anything in life. My health was what controlled my life. When I heard that line for the first time, it resonated with me so much that it (as well as pretty much the entire song, and the idea of waiting for things instead of recklessly pursuing things) became my motto. I still get chills listening to it.

Such a powerful song. I love so many in this musical but this one, as a cancer survivor, hits a lot harder.

This is my favorite song in the musical. I don’t think it gets nearly enough credit as many of the other songs do. There are so many moments in this one song. So powerful.

"Everyone who loves me has died." The fact that he was already romantically connected to Theodosia by this point makes it even more heartbreaking. It sounds as if he is saying the only people who could truly love him were his parents.

@disableddragonborn7 ай бұрын
@@sheassweets-n-thingz5025 We're gonna have to agree to disagree that being married prevents someone from fully loving another person, but what about when they DID get married? "Never" is a very strict word to use.

Every song in this musical is amazing but I love this one the most. I'm at a point where I can look back and feel a bit like Hamilton where I've seized opportunities, but I'm feeling like Burr where I'm just waiting around for my "shot" to come. I've been taking small steps to improve and better myself, but I'm still holding out for that perfect moment and seeing everyone around me rise and succeed makes me question if I'm really giving it my all I've got or if I'm just standing still and letting things pass me by. I believe things happen for a reason, and I can only hope that I'll be at a place where I've found out the reason for me going at the pace I am.

SO POWERFUL!!! This is one of my top favorites. The lyrics, Leslie's voice and performance are all absolutely perfect. How he lets go during the "I am the one thing in life I control" and immediately checks himself and pulls back, like.. argh. Incredible. I'm so happy you guys are doing the film version! Found you guys through be animation series, glad to see you're doing this one as well!

I wouldn't necessarily say Burr is envious of Alexander. While Alex had to build his legacy and reputation, Burr was tasked with maintaining his family's legacy and reputation. I cannot imagine having that responsibility dumped on me. Building a reputation is a lot easier than securing your family's legacy. That's what makes the two so different. Burr is levelheaded and cautious, and Alexander is impulsive, as he has something to prove, with nothing to lose. I interpret "What is it like in his shoes?" as Burr wondering what a life where the only legacy you have to worry about is your own, and not your family's. Honestly, having to defend his family's legacy from such a young age in my opinion may have added to the turmoil inside him that boiled over after he was about to start his own legacy and Alex ruined that.

I absolutely love this song ( so much that I legit had my senior yearbook quote be "I am the one thing in life I can control. I am inimitable, I am an original.") and what I love about that line is that "inimitable" sounds exactly like "inomitable", as in he cannot be omitted from history, as well as the people in his life.

The weird thing is these two would not stop shitting on Angelica and Alexander for their romantic undertones and yet they seemingly dont give a crap about the actual infidelity that Burr is a part of. Their double standards are so wild, literally called Angelica a scumbag on camera for being internally in love with Alex, and Burr legit steals a dude's wife and they say NOTHING. Like does him being British make it ok?

This is the difference between Alexander and Aaron. Alexander takes every Possible shot he can, knowing That he does have some to Lose, and that motivates him. But Aaron waits for the Opportunity to come to him. He believes that the Opportunity will show itself At one time. He to has Something to loose, but the fear Of loosing it keeps him from Pursuing his goals rather than Motivating him. Idk, that’s just what I’m getting From these two songs. (My shot and wait for it)
