Hopefully one day we all can say “ Hey I am a Singaporean that happens to be a Chinese, Malay, Indian or Eurasian etc..” Knowing our race is purely to trace back our roots. Not to be racist. Thanks.

And further more, are these stuck up relatives entitled to have a bad attitude against the child resulting from this marriage…??? Finally: should you count on these relatives and the society at large, school included, as human beings?

Look at the brighter side of life and stop the racist comments. Love you both. Hey my daughter in law is a Chinese and she is a daughter more than a daughter in law to me. Would Chinese(Male)/Minority(Female) couples have a different social acceptance level than Minority(Male)/Chinese(Female) being portrayed? This is a Social Science academic question. No one says this in public, but there has been a long history of an invisible social ranking based on race (Internationally as well). This stigma is still present till today in some closed circles sadly. So the hypothesis goes, that a couple is more socially accepted when a socially higher ranked race on the Male side marries a minority Female, while there may be more social objection when a Male lower on a "social race ladder/minority" tries to marry a perceived "higher" ranked race. In the colonial days, Ang Mohs are viewed as the socially "higher" race, so tremendous backlash occurs when a minority male wants to marry into a White family. While there is less of a backlash if a White man wants to marry a minority woman. I think this concept is still embedded in our society like it or not, and I think this is the trigger from the Chinese Man's perspective in recent incident as well as the taxi driver's curiosity highlighted in this video. This is an academic question to draw understanding.

Mixed race marriages are common even before Singapore's independence, especially amongst Christians. I guess the couples involved need to be mindful that they must have mutual rooted convictions to keep them married ( till death do us part, if possible). These rooted mutual convictions could be same faith, or values, or cultures, etc. Since couples with the same race also face divorces, all the more so if couples are of different race/culture and of different faith/values.

Just my concern and thinking aloud. What if a mixed-race couple wanted to get married but is rejected by his or her parent/s or would-be parent/s-in-law citing his or their racial preferences and reasons to the couple and rejecting one of them for being another race. And the event was captured on video and posted on the internet for the public to view or it may not be captured on video (depends). In such a case, could the law be used to report or charge against the parent/s or would-be parent/s-in-law for being racist against another person? Or have the parent/s terminated by their companies for being racist? Can someone with knowledge of the racist law/ACT help to clarify the law in such a case? Just my two cents. Hope to have a better understanding of the law. I am confused, lost, and frighten!

Increase in interracial unions does not mean it should be condoned or even encouraged. We cannot just look at the small details. See the 'big picture' and it tells a different story.
