Preetipls is a Singaporean comedian and activist, well known for speaking up about issues such as racism and body positivity.
In 2019, Preetipls and her brother, rapper Subhas Nair, were given a conditional warning for a rap video they created which was deemed offensive by the local authorities. The rap video questioned the use of “brownface” in an E-Pay advertisement. This controversy started difficult conversations surrounding the issue of racial discrimination in Singapore.
Preetipls speaks with VICE World News about the reasons behind her controversial rap video, her activism work and the challenges in speaking up about racism in Singapore.

Wherever there's difference in the color of the skin there will be racism and Singapore is no exception. But Singapore's solution to silence the ones who talk about racism is much more problematic. And this is not about American Wokeness. This is about addressing an issue that most people would want to keep under the table just so that they can maintain the status quo of the society because their biggest fear would probably be looking at some other so-called lower class race being equal or better than them.

The government is strict on racism as our country is full of people from different races and religion. Thus the government do not want the Racial Riots in the late 19s to happen again. Even though it may seem talking about a racial. If you read the penal code stated you would understand. If this law is not established, the country would collapse, all I see is a country trying to keep a country stable and secure.

Wow. Thanks for covering this I had so many issues with racism in Singapore as just a tourist. Customs pulled my family into a booth and questioned them really hard. They assumed that they came to work as prostitutes when all they wanted to do was visit and go shopping. That was my first impression of the country before I even entered. I then had many cases of microaggression towards me by the local population. They would stare at you if you had dark skin. It was really sad to see a country with modern infrastructure have such backward thinking.

If the Singaporean authorities was willing to silence a foreign Western journalist when she was poking around doing some investigations on Singapore's Mysterious Sands, a huge pile of sand that was fenced up and guarded around the clock. Singaporean officials were not able to provide any answers when the journalist asked why there were no proof of spending in government funds for it, nobody wants to keep the receipt of government money spent on illegal commodities shipped from Bangladesh. How liberal is Singapore when they purchased something knowingly it was from child and women labor mining sands from the riverside. Even worse when you know it was dealt with the city's mayor, and whoever that tried to speak up for the environmental damage and human rights abuse then life will be at risk.
