72hrs in East Java: Hiking Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu and Mount Ijen

We recently spent 72hrs in East Java and hiked Mount Bromo, Tumpak Sewu and Mount Ijen. It was a tough, but incredible 3 days exploring the most iconic landmarks in Java.

Indonesia has some stunning scenery, and Java is full of incredible places to visit. Spending three days in Java made it tough to fit all of these things in, but we did it and had an epic trip.
Hiking Mount Bromo at sunrise came with incredible views, and them climbing down to the base of Tumpak Sewu was equally rewarding, but the best? That was hiking Mount Ijen for sunrise. It was one of the most difficult things we did, but we made it to the top and watched at the sun lit up the beautiful blue lake that sits in the crater at the summit of Mt Ijen. We really loved Java, and can't wait to come back to see even more.

as a former tour guide to Bromo, this is my trick to deal with the cold winds of Bromo. first you have your basic long sleeves T-shirt and then wear long sleeves cotton shirt, after that, you can put on knitted vest before putting on your padded jacket. this is because usually the weather will get warmer when the sun goes higher, you can take off your padded jacket and you still have enough warmth. as for the vest, for me, is mandatory because the cold wind hit you hard on the chest. and also, dont wear jeans, wear khaki trousers or thick cotton trouser over track trouser. jeans cant hold the cold and it's so thick as well and please wear shoes, dont wear sandals, bromo is sandy and the sand is volcanic sand so it's actually silica so you might hurt the bottom of your feet if you dont wear proper shoes or if the sand gets into your shoes.

Wow. I went to bromo 33 years ago and we had to hike up to that view point with no guides. Turn left when you hear the dog bark, right when you get to a certain plant etc.. at 3am. No jeeps, no crowds, no headlamps, just a blanket from the guesthouse to keep warm. If you wanted to go across to the actual Mount bromo you went by foot or horseback. So crazy to see the changes. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the view. It’s the best I’ve ever seen. Was probably about 10 of us maximum up on the viewpoint the day I climbed it. The world has changed forever with the birth of the smart phone. Lovely video, but made me reminisce a little too much of how things were ❤
