My favorite aspect of Courage is how the horror is handled. Theres always a shift immediately following a scare to slapstick humor as we see courage's reaction to the scare. The horror can be very impactful but the detour into comedy makes it much more digestible.
@margaretvargus32102 жыл бұрын
Great for you, the shift didn’t do a thing to bring me down, it only added to the creep factor that I needed to be okay with horror and it messed with me to the point where I am almost thirty years old today and have never sat through and entire episode and never will.

Probably my favorite part of the show is that Courage fully embodies his namesake. He's a tiny little dog, and he's just as shaky and frightened as you'd think a little dog to be, but there's nary a moment where he isn't scared out of his mind and also not doing something about the thing scaring him. Courage isn't the absence of fear, after all, but acting in spite of it

I was a very easily frightened child, to the point that if any movie or tv episode had a jumpscare in it, even if it was the only one and kind of random, I would never watch it again. So I find it funny how THIS was my favorite cartoon growing up. I think a lot of it boils down to a few things: The comedy is really well done, so that helps ease a lot of the tension, and Courage himself overcoming challenges despite being afraid was always very intriguing and inspiring to watch. He didn't suddenly become brave to prove he could save the day, he just did what he thought was the right thing to do, despite his fear. Also, even though I was a major wimp, I was really fascinated by horror genres and art styles, so this was a treat to watch. And I don't think it needs a reboot or continuation. It's perfect as it is :)

Super cute profile pic! You make art and stuff? And yeah I agree with literally everything here. It scared me as a kid but for some reason I found myself walking into the TV room to sit down any time I heard its iconic intro playing. I guess I loved it for its originality, as I do all shows that I enjoy. I think the thing that I liked most about the show, the thing that made me not utterly hate it for giving me nightmares, was two things. 1: The way that the show ended on a good note for every episode, everything goes back to normal. And 2: Not all episodes were scary. My favorite episodes turned out to be the least scary ones, actually. Moreso for the lessons they teach and such. I guess because their subject matter was so much more realistic and relatable.

As a child, Muriel really stressed me out. Like how do you not see that this is a bad guy? The parts where he acted out scenes I realize now we're supposed to be comedic, to me felt hopeless and desperate. The anxiety of him not even being able to speak to her yet always having to save her. He had the world on his shoulders often literally carrying her away from danger. Then me as the viewer knowing she had learned nothing no matter how narrow the escape and the fact that he lives in this cycle indefinitely. Like not just hell, but an infinite loop where everyone is literally trying to kill your mom and you're the only hero and the sole source of wisdom. To me that was so much scarier than the creeps and I ended up having more stressful less scary nightmares of my mom always being stolen but super oblivious. The disney channel useless/absent parent trope didn't help either. TLDR: "Tell an adult" as an answer was used all the time growing up and I've always found it's subversion in children's media where absolutely no one cares reckless, irresponsible, and harmful. It was what made Courage so terrifying and sad as a child.

It’s weird, I don’t really remember being scared watching this show as a kid. in fact I remember laughing watching the “You’re not perfect” episode. I absolutely loved this show as a 5-6 year old even though now at 27 I can barely sleep after watching horror films. I do remember being terrified watching the Kat’s motel episode, particularly the music that played and the visual of the eyes when the cat was spying on them.

This show holds a special place in my heart, but I never thought of it as "scary". As a kid it was a funny, weird, and sometimes sad and poignant little show. I remember crying during the episode "The Last of the Starmakers", and I still tear up a little thinking of those space squids.

This show was my childhood and one of my favorites from 2000s Cartoon Network. This show is sentimental for me Muriel always reminded me of my grandmother and how much she means to the world to me like what she means to Courage.

Courage scared me as a kid. It took me a couple years from the first episode I saw to actually watch it. Awesome show!

I remember watching this show as a kid probably like 10-11 and being scared and my dads co workers daughter who was probably about 16 was there and held and cuddled me. I will always respect this show for that moment in my life

It's funny back when I was a kid I thought I was pretty much a scardy cat who try and avoid horror, yet I still was drawn to shows like Courage The Cowardly Dog and Are You Afraid Of The Dark. Also, Fingers Cross you do a video on the Angry Beavers Halloween Special that arguably is the best Halloween special and the most under-appreciated one

Even though the show was really scary at times it was always fun to watch because of the charming personality of Courage and his wholesome relationship with Muriel 💗

My first ever and only kids show that I was scared to, but also wanted to watch. Never before did I realize a chicken humanoid mutant can be so terrafying, among other creatures, for my little childish brain. The first Cats episode was nightmare fuel for me with my arachnophobia, especially when one came out of the water pipe into Muriel's bath to attack her. I've spent so many times during my showers as a kid staring from time to time the damn pipe, pondering is it physically possible, won't the spider drown at least?!

Courage might be one of the most artistic shows ever made . It’s so beautiful , the art and the messages . Really amazing and forever a classic

Funnily enough, I was one of the rare exceptions in finding this show terrifying. I found it utterly hilarious and enjoyed Courage's character never giving up, or refusing to do what he needed to save his loved ones despite being afraid. All the Art/Animations and effects never enticed fear in me, I found them goofy, almost too goofy and hence knew it wasn't real. But it was Courage's overblown reactions to the horrors, I found too damned funny and never lost a wink of sleep during my younger years. Good show, good plot and good art styles to really give this show a cult classic in those days.

Think the main reason I was never scared when watching this show was because of the Simpsons Halloween specials conditioned me to accept gore and other questionable material as the norm for cartoons. Never noticed how out of pocket shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog and Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy really were until I started rewatching them recently. Well that and my mother actually let me watch horror films since I was a baby so that also played a role in me being desensitized to Cartoons showing elements that would scare kids and adults.

The only Courage episode that creeped me out was the New York one with Wick the Cockroach, specifically the violin girl. The slab guy didn't bother me or anything else on the show for that matter.

How the hell did you not found King Ramses scary of watching this Show back then as a kid? He’s like the realist scariest one that gave many kids nightmares back then in the 90s & 20s even too myself. It’s honestly weird that people didn’t found him scary back as kids that I bet everybody would terrified of King Ramses if he was near everybody’s homes & scares the hell outta you by taking his Slab which I bet nobody would ever do that if it actually existed in Real Life that it could do though. You never know

I honestly never really understood the fear of Courage. But I watched a lot of intense and scary stuff as a toddler and kid. I actually thought it was great way to introduce kids to horror in a safe way. My favorites were probably Katz Motel and Freaky Fred. Fred was amazing, loved the voice and thought it was a good metaphor for being molested by your uncle in the bathroom. I'm re-watching the show now and I enjoyed the first season but am pretty bored by later seasons. Maybe it's because Courage talks less now that you mention it. Also they are less memorable.

Yesss. You just know the feeling something mature is being "shown" on screen but you're not grasping what that IS. That's the feeling this show gave me as a child. The metaphor for being violated is clever.
@Theran_12 жыл бұрын
part of the charm i found on the show was the music, slapstick is composed greatly by how do you make your hits smashes or crashes sounds, the villain's in courage have all an unique background when they are on screen, the noises every single hit had, the screams, the movement or filters soem characters have, its so good
