It makes sense that Canute doesn't want to just run out and meet Thorfinn. Remember that the last time they met, Thorfinn was a crazed assassin, who could taken on Thorkell, fight his way though many men, and just all around assassinate anyone he set his eyes on (except Askeladd, but that's a whole other story). Canute has missed 4 years worth of his character development. For all he knows, the best assassin he has known, wants an audience with him, representing a losing side. Would a king really meet with such a man?

You're making it sound like he's afraid of him... let's be serious. He has no nostalgia about Thorfinn, just a mindless brute warrior, that's how he was in England, they didn't even talk. He's a king, he can't negotiate with someone other than the owner of the farm himself.

​​​@@Bayard1503 He is clearly scared of much more than just Thorfinn. Canute is at the peak of his paranoia and thus believes that anyone could be as conniving as he currently is. Knowing this, it is absolutely the case that he would be afraid of this unhinged assassin that he knew Thorfinn to be. Also, I just thought of this. If Thorfinn really was just a mindless brute and nothing more, wouldn't Canute want to have an audience with him? If he wasn't scared that he was gonna kill him, then he would definitely want to try to recruit him like he wants to with Thorgil.

As someone who hated Olmar at first this was a really great development to watch. Standing up to Thorgil for his own ideals was great to watch, especially because now he's more brave than his father.

Yeah, and even in a later episode Thorfinn says something like "it took you 1 year what took me 15 years to realize" or something like that, I'm paraphrasing. I've seen plenty of fans mock Olmar because they think he's a coward unlike Thorfinn, which talk about missing the point. Thorfinn slept through his battles, he had to kill thousands before he noticed their bodies were haunting him. Olmar had to only kill one man before it started haunting him. His mind is clearer than young Thorfinn's was.

I never understood how people could hate Olmar at the start to be honest. Sure he was a pretentious jerk who loved gloating about himself, but I saw him as a funny gag character rather than an asshole.

Olmar is the man. Thorfinn, for all we love him, is written as an inspirational, almost mythic main character. Whereas Olmar is a realistic characterization of what a young adult in his position would be like at the beginning of the season. It's cool to see his evolution as a human.

When Olmar is talking about having the courage to allow himself to be mocked. In just this episode we have two scenes in which a character is mocked - One when Ketil's wife micks Snake and throws the water on him, Snake stands there and takes it. He accepts her mocking. Second we have Drott's mocking of Thorfinn, he called him small and stinky, again Thotfinn stands there and accepts Drott's mocking.

I love the message this episode gave Courage is not the absence of fear(Olmar being reckless and trying to kill)..It is the triumph over it(Olmar saying how he should've ignored the teasing even if being called a coward is a great fear of his) Olmar saying "Mock me if you want" is him triumphing over his fear therefore being courageous!

Why do most people think Canute would want to see Thorfinn? Last he saw him he killed his "mentor" and sold him to slavery after thorfinn tried to kill him. He knew him as a blabbering savage with no remorse. From his pov he came to the farm thorfinn was sold to and now Thorfinn can get his revenge.

Thorfinn climbing with a mountain of bodies hanging from him, Canute facing the mountain of bodies he must climb - just one of an endless amount of beautiful touches and symmetries from Yukimura. Vinland is just written on a different level to most.

It's cruel irony that Snake's men were right about Olmar: the fast track for him to become a real man was to kill someone. It's just that the type of "man" he became wasn't what they intended. And unfortunately, a sad truth about mankind is that they often only learn the hard way. It was the same with Thors and Thorfinn, just magnitudes greater.

Don't know if you noticed this, but the girl who's father's arms were cut off. That was so worried about Olmar, is the same girl that Olmar slept with, not long after we met him. Her parents were trying to get into the good graces of Ketil at the time, which Olmar resented. Though I think the girl herself was quite taken with "The Young Master" hence he concern even though her father is now a double amputee.

Be fair to Canute. He hasn't met Thorfinn for four years. They didn't exactly part on the best of terms. He probably assumes Thorfinn is an assassin, and it's not a foolish assumption based on what he knows.

about the height, keep it in mind that at this time, europeans be like.. the average of 150cms-160cms maybe. not yet as tall as today's europeans who can get like.. 170s average. and Scandinavian, just a bit taller than average europeans. and thorfinn there, even tho shorter in the story, but remember.. this is European society. so that short body, probably still around 150cm-160cms. thorkell probably like 2meter tall or something. possible height in the past. but so rare. and also remember, thorfinn there, short because his nutrition got STUNTED. malnourished in his childhood. and even if he eats, obviously mainly just grains(bread) and red meat. few vegetables and stuff. lack of vit D, minerals, etc.

I interpret Canute not wanting to see Thorfinn because of fear for his safety. Canute isn't that much of a coward nor so simple a character. I believe he doesn't want to see Thorfinn because he doesn't need to. Canute's current life has nothing to go with Thorfinn. Thorfinn is part of a past that is no longer relevant, and I feel Canute doesn't want anything to do with anything from his past, all he cares about is his future and his paradise.
