The first time I saw Vance, was in, some say, was the best Vietnam War Movie made. Hamburger Hill. He was less than 30 years old at the time. Played an Army Medic, and faced racial bias from one of the white soldiers in his unit. This movie came out around the late 1980s. Vance, was a standout in that movie too.

Courtney B. Vance was extraordinary in Genius: Aretha. He really carried that movie. The character was flawed indeed but Courtney did an outstanding job portraying Aretha’s father. He was very believable!

i watched it and the series is superb. Suzanne Lori Parks did a fab job directing this and the narrative is phenomenal. I don't care about what the little Franklins think . Even if they had ok-ed it in their minds they would have interfered with the material because of some uncomfortable truths in the NG study revealed. This is one of the main reasons family are kept out of studies like these . The Franklins are not attacking the material used in the film because they know damned near all of it is 100% true even the dramatized part. They know if they attack the source material we would invest more time trying to clock the real tea. so they are jumping from page to page to "boycott" when the their attempt to do so in Detroit failed. We never would have gotten the shows the Crown if we had had to ask every single member of the royal family of england for approval.

Agree, he was hilarious reminding me of elderly men doing that time period. He did an fantastic performance of Rev. C. L Franklin character that came across in movie. . The upcoming other Aretha"s movie the actor portraying Aretha"s Father has to really act to overcome the first C. L Franklin portraying in Genuis. GENUIS was a good enjoyable movie....

Michel Miller, I respect and hear your opinion. I like to comment and sometimes retract them, because someone made me look at it differently. I have watched videos of the Queen herself and this series, down to the outfits, makeup and spoken words were "spot on". My grandmother told me this many years ago, and you may have heard this too... What's done in the dark comes out in the light. Though We may not want it to. It's out there already, unfortunately Aretha had a dysfunctional family life just like most of us. Her father was a character, that's no secret. Of course the family wants to keep the skeletons in the closet and want to portray the perfect family. Realistically that's not true. Historical star's like Ray Charles, Billie Holiday, Elvis Presley, Natalie Cole and Michael Jackson... Just to name a few had troubled lives and career's. But it never took away their talent or legacy or the love their fans "have" for them. This won't change what we know of Aretha... She will always be the Queen of soul and remembered. Aritha did Aritha, good and bad but she was human. Money and control play a part of the families unsuccessful boycott. Truth be told the actor's in this series were brilliant. Jinnefer will keep the Queens request,and I'm sure she will do a great job. It will be interesting to see the story they tell.

Hello Michael, Thanks for your reply, I will explain my statements, # 1 I didn't say Aretha was ugly to look at, I stated she is not or has ever been as beautiful as Halley, "she chose" Halley for her looks not her talent. I personally know Aretha wasn't good to her musicians, check "you're" sources! I am a fan of her music, just not her character. Yes she did do good for people but she walked over people too, even her own family members. As far as not being invited to the legends ball, its also on record, She "wasen't" invited. The women, "legends" that were horned, was legendary and historical. Watching it just recently, Chacka seamed to be enjoying herself, I'm sure she enjoyed receiving those tear drop diamond earrings. As for Queen Latifa playing a part as a woman being with a woman...HELLO... That's who she is in real life. It's not my personal choise, but to each its own. I'm not God. I selected her on her "professional abilities" and she looks closer than both actress. I am a huge Jennifer Hudson fan by the way. I just really enjoyed the actors in genus, Jennifer has to come with it... That's what I was saying. So I hope this sets the record straight. She will always be the 👑 of soul! 😉

I am a fan courtney b vance I was not a fan of this story of Aretha Franklin . I think he did play the hell out of this role as C.L Franklin I do not no how accurate it was of Aretha Franklin father. He is a brilliant actor he play role as best as he could with information they give him. But he seem believable in this role as Aretha Franklin father. Only a season, experience actor could do that. Mr. Courtney b. Vance is great and wonderful actor no matter What role he plays like in Law in Order and other roles in t.v shows or movies. He has to be on point with his acting roles. Because his wife is Angela Bassett and we no she is terrific , wouderful , great and brilliant actress of all time.

It's a game, and they always seem to treat us like slaves going against each other. Why could there just be Jennifer Hudson Movie of Respect since it was the only movie Aretha approved. Yes this guy Vance may have played a good part, but I do not understand how, considering it seems like he knew nothing about Aretha, or her father. A great actress Hollie Berry felt inadequate about playing a big super star like Aretha, but Cynthia took the part without questioning it, and it's because of selfish reasons. She is not a Black person who's ancestors were enslaved Africans, therefore. I do not feel good about supporting her. I do not like Woopi Goldberg either, because why wont she question her about Aretha Franklin family not wanting people to support it.

But I want to see her performance before I decide. Personally Halley knew she wasn't right for the part, Aretha chose Halley for her bueaty, that's something Aretha didn't have. She shot down Queen Latifa who could have played heat very well. Aretha was a genus as an artist but delusional about what she saw herself to be in our eyes. She wasn't a nice person at all. Again you can have an opinion but that doesn't change the facts. Besides art is in the eyes of the beholder. Who's to say this version doesn't come from one who knew her. Like I said all that was shown is already out their, it was redone down to the exact Clough's and surroundings. Nothing was taken away from Aretha. Wonder why Oprah didn't invite Aretha to the legends ball... That Say's a lot!

She accomplished too much in her life, and was awarded to much for people to just think she was not nice.. She spoke her mind! people did not understand her. Also she was not delusional, why would someone anyone allow Queen Latiffa to play them. she is not a role model. she played a woman in love with another women in a movie, so why would she want her to play her? What do you consider beautiful. Aretha was a beautiful black woman as a young woman, unless you're referring to her not being very light skin, or skinny, but she was then many years in her career. I have the taping of her. I do not understand. she probably did not want to attend the Legend Ball. People like Aretha, Michael Jackson because they were so big did not attend many events. Aretha started attending the Grammy late in life even though she was winning them all. Also lets not lie, or speculate on why Aretha did not attend the Legend Ball. Chaka said she wished she had not gone. I thank you for your comment, but I see you are not a big Aretha Franklin fan, or Jennifer Hudson, but so many, many, many people were, and are.
