I don't care about the comparison. Both of these performers make my day! I'll never forget seeing Courtney Hadwin's AGT audition. Frikken made me smile, laugh, cry. Janis is a legend and embodied her music, as does Courtney. Thank you. I needed to see this today.

I know, I couldn't believe my ears, and tears definitely were in the works. She disappointed me later, but I can't blame her for that, she needs some supporting staff, to give her a foundation, some stability, and direction, with that the world will be her oyster.

I like Courtney and love Janis. Both sing from the bottom and belt it out and have range, but where Courtnay kind of pushes it out forcibly (which still sounds amazing), Janis pushes for fun but her voice is her voice and always has that same raspiness and grit no matter what note she is hitting. Janis is definitely a legend.

I've been a fan of Janis Joplin's for 45 years. This young girl has an interesting voice, but it sounds *nothing* like Janis. Please understand I'm not taking anything away from this performer, I'm just talking about the person who posted this claim that she sounds like Janis. She doesn't even sing from the same part of body. I think it would do this youngin' better to give her mad props for her own *unique* vocal stylings, rather than comparing her to someone whose voice and in stage presence absolutely electrified and mystified her audiences (my former art teacher used to go to Filmore East, in NYC, and hang out with Janis after her shows; he always brought her a bottle of Southern Comfort. For high school graduation, 16 years after Janis died, this art teacher gave me all of his original, first pressing, Janis Joplin, and Big Brother and the Holding Co. albums. (I wound up living four blocks north of the Filmore East not long after graduation.) This young performer has her own thing going on that should be applauded -- and is. But come on-- Clive signed Janis after seeing ONE performance. He knew after one song he was signing her. Janis was one of a kind. I wish this youngin much success -- but even more than that, happiness. That's more important than anything. Cheers.

I mean… Janis’ voice is higher and they have a very different sort of rasp to it. I agree they have a similar vibe and you definitely see some inspiration by Janis in some of the songs Courtney sang, but their voices are different, and I think that comparing them directly is not only sort of incorrect but can also be harmful. The point is, when compared to Janis, most (virtually all) singers will seem mediocre. If we will just be comparing them directly, Courtney may become just “that girl who sounds like Joplin but worse”, while she is doing very much her own thing with her voice and has a potential to become a truly amazing singer. Can’t wait for some new songs by her. Peace

But difference is Janice did drugs and Courtney hasnt had that experience.and is still a Kid here. You're comparing a 13 year old to a Legend who went through Multiple experiences in life that Courtney hasnt. She is pure here like any kid that age would be. Janice experienced all the stuff that Courtney hasnt . She is very much protected by her family where Janice didnt seem like she had that in her life. She was exposed to a lot which she shouldnt have been.

@@thierpetersen7907 lol, here we go with the "better" trope. One can say, "I like Courtney more than Janis" because music is subjective to the ears of the beholder. My comment was not based on one being "better" than the other but rather one trying to imatate the original. Courtney's imitation of Janis is contrived while the original was pure organic. Like a Beatles tribute band is a contrived imitation of the original. Oscar Wilde - 'Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery that mediocrity can pay to greatness.'

@@bertjones3010 I respectfully disagree. Courtney is NOT imitating Janice nor anyone, not at all. She studied Janice, James Brown, Aretha Franklin, etc. Many artists take bits and pieces of the past and mold it into their own, and that's exactly what Courtney is doing. Courtney's voice at 13 with Hard to Handle is much more refined then Janice, and raw still the same. Her newer stuff truly highlights Courtney's singing ability. Your Oscar Wilde quote is an insult to Courtney, period. Courtney isn't mediocre at all, and yes it's too early to tell but Courtney's greatness could be greater than Janice's. In today's music world Courtney is a rare find, bringing us back to those unfiltered rock & roll days. To my ears Courtney is much better then Janice, and that takes nothing away from who Janice was and how she performed and sang.
@bertjones3010
@bertjones3010 3 жыл бұрын
@@mmcpa Ok JP, I wrote my original comment two years ago when she appeared on AGT so lets say that it has aged a bit since then. Obviously then that comment could not reflect any opinions since then. So lets go revisit my comment from two years ago and address them in context of your comment. First off, you will notice the title of this video and the use of "VS". And you yourself said that Courtney was different which proves my point to a T. There is only one original, and all others can only be a copy. But the video author wanted to establish that as a comparison and that just makes it clickbait bullshit since you can't really compare them. And yes, I did use Oscar's quote because that's how I felt then especially in the context of the 'debate'. Secondly, with respect to Courtney's performances and especially her antics onstage came across as highly contrived. I've seen Janis perform twice live and there was nothing contrived or choreographed about her stage presence, she had a live band with no backing music. Her growls were colored with Southern Comfort and cigarettes. She was delving a great deal into the drug scene. Those are the things that made Janis the artist she was. (That's not praise, it's fact.) It seemed apparent to me Courtney was 'borrowing' physical stage moves from other artists to provoke a response of comparison just as she wanted. I also believe that 'shy' act was just that - an act (at least at that point in her life). You do know the difference between contrived & organic right? And that sir, is what left an impression upon me which wasn't favorable. Look, the fact that you're a fan, that's no big deal - music is subjective to the ear of the listener. So I've listen a very little to Courtney since then and she's okay but will never make my playlist. Of course I didn't think Floor Jansen of Nightwish would either till I caught her vocals on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers. So one can never tell - If I live long enough I might find a performance Courtney does that does end up on that list. So I still stand by my original statement and I hope you get where I'm coming from.

@bts paved the way You want to see current real talent go listen to Diana Ankudinova. Original, organic and very talented. But back to Courtney for a second. Since I first saw her she has picked songs and emotes that are hers not someone else's, be it Mick or Janis. She'll be fine. I do see what you said in another post I made about her being "bigger" than Janis and all I can say to that is 'meh'. When one is the original of something singular it's hard to come along and be 'better'. Better to be your own original rather than someone else's. Lastly, and with all due respect, my critical reaction to what I saw was honestly given. I wasn't trying to troll or be toxic. I respect you're fangirlling on her and that's fine. Music is subjective and totally in the ear of the beholder. Regards,

If Janice Joplin were alive today to see this performance, she would retire for good. You CANNOT compare Courtney Hadwin with Janice, because Courtney is at a level Janice never could reach and never did. Unless you have seen and listened to her, you would never believe. I have seen her clip a few times now and every time, it brings me to tears. She is electrifying!

@@auser8570, agree. Actually, I only watch auditions, because they're like supernovas that first time. I guess it's the adrenaline rush. The second the industry gets its hands on them, they fade into dwarf stars.
