When Northrop’s flying wings were ordered to be scrapped, one wooden prototype managed to slip through the cracks and survive. This prototype was the N9MB. The N9MB was found in a boneyard in 1982 by Edward Maloney, the founder of the Planes of Fame Air Museum. Restoration work began that same year, and the N9MB took to the skies for the first time again in 1995.

Due to how expensive these planes are, a very small number of them were built, total of 21, all of them were named after a state, in 2008 during a takeoff accident, the Spirit of Kansas was lost on the Island of Guam, with the loss of that plane, we only have 20 remaining.
@socket_error1000

To be fair they would cost less if they built more. The procurement costs were less than $1 billion and that included spare parts and expected software upgrades and other improvements. The additional $1.1 billion that pushed each planes total cost over the $2 billion per plane cost was the cost to develop the technology. Every plane they build spreads that development cost out. So if they had built 50 like they planned originally the cost would have been closer to $1.3-1.5 billion per aircraft.

@@ads2686 Yeah but everyone (different countries as well as service branches) wanted the F-35 to do different things so when you get down to it they spent that money developing all those different variants (Basically different jets) as well as the new gadgets like the helmet that we are starting to see some elements of that technology incorporated in older aircraft bring them into the 21st century. And it is easier now to make that a part of new aircraft development as well. Imagine how much more the F-22 program would cost if it had to be able to have a VTOL version as well as a carrier version for the Navy or even just a ski ramp version like they are now being asked for of some jets like they are now testing the F-18 Super Hornet for.

What this video says about the B2 is accurate but like most documentaries about this plane they didn't disclose the precise reason why this was built. Strangely enough it was sort of built out of desperation. In a nuclear war the 1st targets that are attacked are targets that could have nuclear weapons, such as Air bases that house nuclear cable bombers or nuclear missile bases or nuclear missile submarines and thier Harbors. Indeed these weapons and bases would be heavily defended but the primary reason why the B-2 was Built-in the 1st place was because the Soviets built land based MOBILE nuclear launch platforms, such the SS-16. they were essentially large trucks that were big enough to house ICBMs and launch them at targets. they could drive around in the Soviet countryside where they're very hard to find and detect, then launch thier weapons at the United States and her allies. in order to stop this threat the United States needed an aircraft that could penetrate enemy airspace and look for them without being discovered, and destroy the these mobile platforms or die trying.

Back in the late 1980's, I was on my terminal assignment, before retirement, with the US Air Force. I was assigned to the F-117 project at Tonopah Test Range, NV, before and after it was declassified. Due to my job, I was given access to data/information on the B-2 testing, also before it was classified. The design of those aircraft is from the late 70s and early 80s and they continue to work. They've updated the technology but not the design. And BTW, the man that "discovered" stealth technology was Russian.

The XB-35 and YB-49 share the same dimensions of the B-2 Spirit. The XB-35 & YB-49 are actually the same airframe, it was just a matter of converting from piston engines to jet engines. Sadly all the prototypes were ordered to be cut up and all pertinent paperwork, blueprints, etc. to be burned. This happened because Jack Northrop refused to merge his company with Convair after he won the contract for the first nuclear-capable bomber. He was ordered to merge with Convair at the behest of Air Force Secretary Stuart Symington to keep that company from going under.

My father worked for Northrup during the development of the B-2 in the '90s. He was a civilian contractor that started with another contractor that developed and maintained the simulator for training pilots to fly the B-2. When I asked him about his time at CyberSystems in the early '80s (I was born 1980, we lived in Colton, California, and CyberSystems was in Pico Rivera, California--insane commute, but it is what it is) he told me he was in charge of working on and maintaining the flight simulator for the B-2. When I asked him about the simulator, he told me that the machine made Disneyland's Star Tours look like the $.25 mechanical rocking horse found in front of grocery stores. He went on to work for Northrup-Grumman at Edwards Air-force Base in California in the last few years of the '80s and most of the '90s before the B-2 went in to service as an engineer who would "run the radar data" from their radar testing. This was a B-2 towed into an anachoic chamber and radar cross sections and test were run during the day (huge cement building with no windows and radar absorbing spike on all surfaces of the chamber except where the plane sat. They would record the radar test and my dad would take the tapes (yes, literal tapes) and was in charge of "running the radar data" whatever that meant. All he could tell me was they were testing the shape and skin for radar absorption and he was in charge of making sure the machines and computers processing the data ran correctly. I was 13 or 14 at the time when I asked him just how big the B-2 was. His answer was a wingspan bigger than a B-52, but length shorter than an F-16. I knew he dealt with radar testing, so, I asked him, how big does it show on radar. Being into R/C airplanes and having a .40 size plane (60" wingspan), he told me it showed up marginally larger than my R/C plane. His analogy was you were dead and blown up before you heard the engines let alone saw the plane itself. My dad ended his career working for GE as an engineer working at what used to be March Air-force base working on their Boeing 747 test-bed where the inboard right/starboard engine was the experiment. The plane would fly between March AFB and somewhere in China (don't ask why: it makes no sense--even to dad) to test GE's new jet engines and dad would always complain when it came back about how the standards were so horrible that screws were missing, wires and cables were not labeled, panels not even remotely secured properly and he and his team would spend the next several weeks putting thing back together properly so the next time the plane flew nothing would fall off. He even had to sometimes climb and crawl his way into the fuel bladders in the wings to verify no Chinese nonsense. Listening to his stories, despite being a civilian contractor with Northrup and then GE are some of my fondest memories from my childhood and something that we still bond over today as I always send him some awesome stuff just to start the conversation. He has always been an Amateur radio operator since he was either 9 or 11, can't quite remember, but was born in 1957, so, gives an idea of the era; when I was 15 or 26, he had a Morse code ham radio conversation with a gentleman in the midwest who's either father or grandfather was part of the P-61 Black Widow project towards the end of WWII. Thy hit it off so well, that the guy sent my dad a VHS tape recording of the flight training video for the P-61. I remember watching that with him when he got it. And when I found the same video here on KZbin 3 or 4 months ago, I sent it to him. ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIvbnXyghtacis0&pp=ygUtZmxpZ2h0IHRyYWluaW5nIHZpZGVvIG9mIHRoZSBwLTYxIGJsYWNrIHdpZG93 for anyone wondering). Sorry for being so long winded. As of right now, they are supposedly building the B2's little brother, the B21 Raider. Looks similar, but is smaller and carries about half the weapons payload. The B2 sometimes does a flyover just before outdoor professional and college sports games begin, and videos of that have been posted by several different users on KZbin. The really interesting flyover is when a B52, B1 and B2 fly formation over the stadium before the start of a game. At the B2' home base, Whiteman Air Force Base, aircraft stationed there include the B2, a wing of A10 Warthogs, and also some AH64 Apache attack helicopters.

They are actually building a newer version of this (B-21) expected to be ready in the early 2030s. It will be much more advanced and at least two generations ahead of the current version in technology and stealth. The amount of planes to be built is still not set as it just went into development. Cost should be substantially less, in comparison, than the B-2 spirit's $2.1 billion unit cost in 1997 ($3.74 billion in today's money). Development cost for the B-21 is budgeted at about $32 billion through 2027 and the planes final per unit cost was set back in 2010 ($550m) at a current dollar value of $730 million. A lot cheaper than it cost to develop and build the older B-2. Hopefully they will build enough to make the most of the investment in technology. If they only build 20 than we will be adding $1.6 billion in development costs on top of the $730 million per unit price making them cost $2.33 billion each. Still cheaper than the B-2 spirit's price in 1997 but if they build 50 of them the total cost per plane would be $1.37 billion or just $780 million in 1997 dollars making it cheaper to build 50 B-21's for $68.5 billion in today's money ($38.97 billion in 1997 dollars) than it cost to build 21 of the B-2 Spirits @ $42 billion+ in 1997.

It's the primary NAV system Its an Astro-inertial navigation to keep signals as low as possible by not using satellites it tracks stars. it has an almanac of 32 stars and with those it can navigate anywhere in the work and not give off any signals. Worst part about it, the chemical toilet, that thing is nasty i'm glad i wasn't a crew chief they had the "honor" of changing the toilet cartridge after flight. the crew compartment has its on special kinda smell when its been in the air for over 40hrs. i hate to say it but the crash was cause by a maintainer who for got one step in trouble shooting the pitot system. first step turn heater on to make sure there is no water in the system.

I lived in Knob Noster, right next door to Whiteman AFB. I remember when they came to Whiteman. I have been to the airshows when we could get very close to the B-2 and other aircraft. It is huge and impressive. It is also very loud on takeoff. They are named for several states, they are the Spirit of and then the state name.

The F-117 did take part in the first Gulf War attacking critical targets in the first airstrikes of the war, taking out radar guidance centers and other command and control structures. To me, the B-2 Spirit looks more like a boomerang.

The real kicker? The B-2's first flight was 1989! They are ned for states, but they are mot based individually in their namesakes. Amazing the early models were flying in the 1940's. The wingspan of the B-2 is the same as the YB-49 from the 1940's.

B2 shot the nuke in the 1996 alien invasion movie Independence Day and Flying Wing dropped the nuke in the alien invasion movie War of the Worlds (1953). Both bombs failed to get the aliens. At this time one of the B2's biggest roles is to fly over the Super Bowl during the national anthem.

@@CourtneyCoulston Pick one of the large Airshows one year, check out their scheduled lineup and make a trip out of it. I used to go to 2 or 3 a year until my 20s. The Oshkosh Airshow is a pretty big one. Since I am from Seattle, I regularly went to the Canadian Abbotsford Airshow, where you could see a lot of planes that would never fly in the US (this was in the 80s during the Coldwar). I first saw the Soviet Mig-29, and SU-27 there. Which is funny because the Airport is barely across the US border...

U.S.A. These airplanes are unreal. The U.S. spends a load of money on defense. As you will see. The B-2 does look like a sting ray. The U. S. wants to be able to fight a two (2) front war. Also check out the warthog - A-10. Our smart bombs are unreal. They can drop one of these down your shirt pocket. Our ballistic missiles are frightening. They can go around the world and they have multiple warheads. Lastly the Navies Aircraft Carrier Battle Group is awesome. A floating, movable airport. They have about 6,000 people onboard with 70 to 80 airplanes on board. How would you like to cook for that many people? Four to five meals a day. Busy, busy sailors. Our military is all professionals nowadays. Well paid and well trained. Motivated people with high standards. Enjoy these videos. Take care of yourself. Thank you and take care.

Rapid advances in computers explain the differences between the F-117 and the B-2. The F-117 is the sharply angled smaller plane that can only carry two bombs for 900 miles. It's sharp and angled because of computers - they weren't fast enough then to design the complex curves of the later B-2. The F-117 is a "F" for fighter, but that was a lie - it's strictly a bomber, can'r fight or defend itself, and was called the F-117 vs the B-3 or whatever to fool the Russians about its role.
