As a Belgian I'll say this: If Courtois never plays for us again I think it would be a bummer and I'd be quite sad it ends this way but at the same time we have enough young goalkeepers with lots of potential (Vandevoordt, Penders, etc.) and also good goalkeepers with lots of experience (Casteels, Sels, Kaminski, etc.) so at least there wouldn't be THAT much of an impact to the team's performance. However, if he does come back to play for us I'd be glad as long as it's not at the cost of sacking Tedesco (except if he deserves to be sacked) or ruining the morale of the team. Also just wanted to point out 6:29 Tedesco signed his 2 year extension way back in March when the tournament hadn't even begun.

I watched an interview on Belgian TV a year ago, that was supposed to be ‘his part of the story’… it was mostly moaning about some incident about who was supposed to get the captains armband when Lukaku was substituted during a qualifying match. He really is just that petulant and a toxic element. But him withdrawing is not him acknowledging that.

Tedesco got the 2 year extension before the tournament, when he was still doing well with belgium and hasn't lost. We all were cautiously optimistic about Tedesco despite the Courtois drama, most Belgians even took Tedesco's side because Courtois was acting like a kid, but we still found it weird that he got the extension before the Euros. Now it proves why we shouldn't have done this and we're stuck with this guy until the world cup we hopefully qualify for, which is most likely the last world cup with KDB and Lukaku. Honestly as a Belgian I was excited for our team, Tedesco experimented a lot in the friendlies building up to the Euros by giving some young players their first caps etc. But all that disappeared during the Euros, he became stubborn with his lineup, didn't change much despite the bad results.

If an employee came to me and said that they wanted double the money or they would quit, I say no and they quit then I will understand why they quit but that doesn't mean they were worth double the wages. I think it's fair to give some context here. Thibaut became upset with Tedesco because Tedesco didn't give him the captain's armband on Thibaut's 100th cap game. Thibaut threw a tantrum and left in the middle of the camp claiming 'injury'. A few months later he did his ACL and never played for Belgium again. There was some back and forth in the media between Thibaut and Tedesco but basically neither party wanted to back down and eventually Thibaut declined the call-up for the EUROs months before it even started claiming he wouldn't be fit, even though he was cleared to play the end of the season and even played the Champions league final. I think Courtois has an ego problem and I don't know if Belgium would invite him with open arms if he ever decides to come back. Now I'm also not defending Tedesco here. He's done a great job in qualifying and in my opinion he handled the transition from the end of the 'golden generation' well and called up more young and exciting players. However the EUROs were a shit show and it showed Tedesco is not great at managing high-stake games. In my opinion, with the EUROs and the Courtois situation, I don't believe he should have gotten a contract extension. Obviously, missing the best goalkeeper in the world is a big blow, but I do believe that with the other goalkeepers we have in Casteels and Sels we have some very capable replacements and we also have some exciting prospects coming through so I'm not too worried about it tbh. It's as good a time as any to transition away from Courtois.

I disagree Z. If you’re selected to play for your country and that means anything to you then you do your job. Yes it’s a shocker that Courtois won’t be between the sticks but worth noting that other stars such as De Bruyne and Lukaku haven’t taken similar positions. Regardless of how good or otherwise the manager is, in this situation the FA has done the right thing by supporting their manager over an individual player. Courtois should come clean to the Belgian people on what is so egregious and insurmountable that he can’t or won’t play for his nation.
