Do we need to know for the current AQA spec how sigma/pi bonds work? And in more complicated questions if both compounds have a spare pair of electrons how do we know which compound donates their pair and which one receives it?

As in, how can you work out, from the reactants, what the products will be? is there a way? I'm not sure if they're is that's why I asked :) thank you
@AlleryChemistry8 жыл бұрын
+Ashleigh Knowles Not particularly, just have to remember the general reactions really. They all follow some kind of pattern e.g. acid + carbonate will produce salt, carbon dioxide and water. Keep practicing. Exam papers and you will see that many of them you will become familiar with the general products.

Where do you get the positive charge in NH4+
@AlleryChemistry7 жыл бұрын
Ammonia NH3 has no charge. When add H+ ion you get NH4+ as overall charge is now positive

Could anyone please explain why exactly benzene has 12 sigma bonds?
@arthurmorgan466Ай бұрын
I’m sure you probably do not need the explanation now, but I’ll say anyway. Essentially the structure of a benzene ring isn’t what most think with every other bond on the carbon chain to be a double bond. That is not right, due to p orbitals that aren’t being used because they are all carbon-carbon single bonds, every carbon atom has a p orbital that sits above and below that carbon atom, these overlap with the p orbitals from other carbon atoms, which creates a pi system. So essentially it’s 12 sigma bonds because kekule’s model is incorrect, there are no carbon-carbon double bonds.

But pi bonds have 4 electrons, 1 pair in the sigma bond and 2 electrons in each cloud
